Love our place...it has five rooms...we could actually lose sight of each other... A lovely bottle of Sicilian wine & biscotti welcomed us last night. Today we headed into the Teatro Massimo centre for info gathering & a wander. Their info centres here are just great for anything you need to know....one Sicilian lady & maps & timetables later we left with a nice experience of being very welcome.. Viap Maqueda area has some quite fascinating architecture dating from 1140. Love the faces in the advertising photo! A little more grocery shopping & home for the afternoon.. 6.15pm we headed out before dark & made our way to Teatro Massimo to catch the City Circut bus, all the street lights coming on & most monumental places lit up. Complete circut was 50mins & there was often ... read more

For some reason....for which I can't remember...we had to arrange our flight from Napoli to Catania and that is, not to Palermo which was our destination. We have stopped in Catania before today and taken the fantastic train trip between Palermo and Catania & thought this would be easy done to get us to our dedtination. The train trip was fabulous (3hours €13 ea) the scenery was beautiful & on up through Enna. Very dry & many crops just finished so the land being tilled...the dark tilled soil fields in total colour contrast to the dry hay fields. Our trip entailed 1 walk, 1 train, 1 bus, 1 plane, 1 bus,1 train, 1 bus, 1 walk...we knew exactly what we were doing....we really did! Home on the 4th floor (with lift) in the business centre part ... read more

Geo: 38.1157, 13.3612Late night arrival in Palermo. Unique and quirky accommodation in the old city. Every room decorated differently. Obscure art pieces adorning each room. Old motorbikes, scooters and sculptures feature prominently, as do highly carved doors from India. Allesandro a great host - clearly he has a penchant for collecting unusual artifacts.Chiesa di San Giovanni degli Eremiti, an interesting mix of Arab Norman architecture, built on top of a mosque. Really beautiful columned Norman cloisters surrounded by a garden of citrus trees, palms, cacti, rosemary bushes and ruined walls. The Capella Palatina, the royal chapel of the Norman kings of Sicily in the Palazzo Reale is jaw dropping. Built around 1140 it is has glittering gold mosaics over all the walls, exquisite marble floors and a wooden carved ceiling. It is so ornate it's actually difficult ... read more

Our last train journey together to Palermo where we said good bye to Colleen and Peter and off they went on the next leg of their journey to Sardinia. Judi, Adrian and I had booked into Xenia BnB not far from the station and it proved to be a gem of a place.. just off the main street down a little alley. It was in a very old building but had been very well restored and modernised and we had a wonderful welcome from Guisy who plied us with juice and cannoli and sat down with the map to explain where we were and what we should see. Not long after we were out on the streets and exploring ...there is so much to see there and one day would not do it justice but we ... read more

Hier rest ... read more

We were not sorry to leave Naples behind us, apart from everything it is a beautiful city with lots o things to see. But to get out of this place without scratches to your car is wonderful. We had a good run towards Reggio de Calabria. We arrived early afternoon due to a very nice no toll road where you could drive 140-150 k.m. A young person showed us our room that was just newly refurbished. Very nice. We went out for a walk to see a bit from the city for we are there just for the night. Shops are all open till at least 8 o'clock. We looked for a place to eat that was hard to find. We finished up in a small family place. It was called Piza place. We settled for ... read more

Anita planned this spot so I could swim in the sea, and I have twice, but the weather is not cooperating. Chilly and windy yesterday, so we went to Palermo and saw sculptures of Giacomo Serputto.... read more

We spent our last two days in Palermo figuring out transportation and routes for the last ten days of our trip. We leave here tomorrow for the small Aolian Island of Lipari, a train and ferry ride away. It is close to Stromboli, an active volcano. After three nights there in an apartment almost on the beach, we take a ferry, train, and plane to Rome, where we spend the night, and then fly to NYC, and take a train to Connecticut to see my Mom and step-dad...and celebrate my mom's 85th birthday! We also toured the Palace (which doubles as the home of the local legislature), observed the end of a famous car rally, and took in a rehearsal of the ballet company's Cinderella at the Teatro Massimo. The quiet here still amazes us: in ... read more

We were met at the train station by our host Luigi's son, and greeted at the apartment by Luigi himself. Luigi is of Spanish/Jewish/German/Italian descent and the same age as Bill. He experienced the bombing of Palermo as a young child, had many stories of his parents' and grandparents' struggles to survive. He was an aeronautics professor, and speaks several languages, including French and English. The apartment is wonderful: in the heart of the Capo district, a very poor, old neighborhood that is being renovated. You can walk past doorways and look inside, seeing things that appear not to have changed since the Middle Ages, right next to a renovated apartment building. On the next block, we can see buildings being torn down, by hand, from our window. While we are of course stared at, we ... read more

Sicily. Day 2. Free day In Palermo I awoke at 8am to my phone buzzing and chirping at me. Damn, why did I set that alarm? A continental breakfast with water in my cereal since no soya milk provided. Rest of it ok, just. Next job putting bikes together, which took until lunchtime helping others with the job of tyre pumping and setting up brakes etc. The rain stopped by lunch, which had hindered our bike testing. My left gear changer jammed at one point , which meant I had no gears on chain ring - a disaster. However it started to work after a bit if force was applied. Strange! Hope it is ok from now on. We then went for a stroll into town and lunch at a restaurant by a very ornate church ... read more
