We now have a few one night stops at B+B to see some interesting places. After getting our car back in the street, it had to come out of underground garage, we struggled out of Palermo. It reminded us on Naples the way they drive. Never heard of giving way or roundabouts. Anyway we made our way to Agrigento too see the Valley of the Temples. Country roads very small as well a lot of them under repair so we had to wait everywhere but we arrived around midday at a most attractive B+B. It had a restaurant as well. The most beautiful view you can imagine overlooking the Mediterranean. We left our luggage and went 13 kilometres down to the Valley of the Temples. The entrance was most confusing you just could not find it. ... read more

We took a train across the island of Sicily from Palermo to Agrigento, and the Valley of the Temples on Friday. "This splendid archaeological park consists of eight temples (and various other remains) built between about 510 BC and 430 BC: the Temple of Hera, the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of Heracles, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Temple of Castor and Pollux, the Temple of Hephaestos, the Temple of Demeter, and the Temple of Asclepius (the God of Medicine). Apart from this latter, which is to be found on the banks of the Akragas river, all are situated in the same area on rocky crests south of modern day Agrigento (not really in a Valley at all!). The archaeological park and landscape of the Valley of the Temples is the largest archaeological site in ... read more

Cicily. Day 9. Sun 18 Oct Last night we had squid and octopus again for a starter, unfortunately the suckers kept attaching themselves to the roof of my mouth, which slowed the meal down somewhat. Otherwise it was a great meal with free wine, which went down rather better than the crawley bits and more so since Ben kept topping up my glass when I was not looking. This was preceded by a walk around the town of Sciacca and people watching. The harbour had maybe 30 or 40 fishing boats anchored which bring in tonnes of fish each day to the busy fish market. It is a bit of a climb up the steps to the main town centre where there are many churches with singing going on. When we reached the Basillica, The Church of ... read more

What is it that makes one place so uninteresting and the next enthralling? It is a question we have puzzled over. Visits to great cities like Vienna left us cold, but our last trip, to Sicily, had us enchanted from the moment our plane touched ground. Okay, actually from the air before landing. The landscape is dry, rocky, and rather harsh, yet something in it spoke to us; something in that Mediterranean landscape was instantly familiar. Sure, we are native Californians. Is that all it is? When our friend Clare suggested that we use her father's house in the Sicilian countryside for a few days, we thought, "why not"? I'd always wanted to visit Sicily and this seemed serendipitous as we had a little time after the semester in Venice ended. And so we went, flying ... read more

Okay I have now been home for a week and jetlag must be over. I have had bad dreams every single night. I wake up wondering what hotel room I'm in and if I ever got out of the maze of narrow streets in the manual shift car going uphill on a 2-way but single lane street with a hairpin turn coming up and a car coming towards me. I need to finish this blog obviously so I can get on to better dreams and be finished with Spain/Sicily 2014. From Ragusa we headed to Agrigento which should have been a simple entrance to the SS115 and then exit directly to the hotel in Agrigento. Well let me say that one tiny error added an hour or more to our trip and we saw a lot ... read more

It's hard to believe but all that was required was to leave Siracusa the same way we came in, stay on 115 and then turn right just at Agrigento and we would be there. Somehow, somehow we made a wrong turn. Mind you we did see some interesting countryside and thank goodness no narrow streets but we managed to add 25 minutes to our arrival time. No stops. Now hungry we just left our suitcases after checking in and headed off to the beach area at San Leone where we had a very good fish lunch and of course we were the last ones eating and they were closing the restaurant around us as we finished. Back to the hotel for a nap for 3 out of 4 people while I did the blog (had the ... read more

So during our stay with Martina and O'Nofrio, we took a little day trip one day to Agrigento, who's landmark is infamous for its larger than life, sandy colored rustic looking columns scattered throughout a plateau overlooking the ocean. Agrigento was about 20 - 30 minutes away from their house, located on the southern coast of Sicily. I remember it being VERY hot this day!! When we got there, there was an indoor area type of museum which we walked around for a bit. In this museum, there was a large sand colored figure, the same color as the ruins, hoisted up on the wall, covering the entire height of the wall from ceiling to floor. It was ginormous! The museum was 2 or 3 floors, and the figure was the height of all the floors ... read more

Todays gelato flavours - GMB - Torroncino(nougat, honey and nut flavours) GLB - Bacio (chocolate and hazelnut) The aromas of pastries somehow drifted up the three flights of stairs from the breakfast room to our room and got us thinking about getting ready for the day as the sunlight streamed into the room when we opened the shutters. We are becoming fans of the shuttered rooms we have had as it not only reduces any outside noise but also keeps the room dark and aids sleeping. The shutters come in different types and the ones in this hotel are very easily opened by pulling on a drawstring and hey presto you have light. We have scored well with this hotel and we have a room as well furnished as the Best Western and even a bit cheaper at €32 ... read more
