I guess I am still dealing with some jet lag, because I woke up at 5 AM today. Not sure why, but I decided that what I should do was to go chase down the sunrise so I could see it and take pictures of it. Trying to follow a straight line in Venice is near impossible. I walked and walked and kept thinking that I would be at the Eastern edge of the island soon. I have to say that my favorite times in Venice have been either super later, or super early when the crowds are gone and the city is clean and quiet. This was a great walk, although I did feel a bit like I was in the Tales of the Vampire series, as in I was freaking out because the sun ... read more

Where we are staying at in Italy, the small town of Ghirla, is a nice quite place. The weather has turned warming than usually in this part of Italy. The temp is in the mid 90’s but the humidity has to be 70% +. Our first few days where filled with local trips all within a couple hours drive of the house. On Friday we visited the city of Milan to the south of us. Milan is the second largest city in Italy. We parked just outside the city and road the metro train in. We saw the major sights, but for the most part Milan is just another big city. Saturday we got caught up on laundry and such. Melissa and I took a short drive in the countryside to the North west of ... read more

Day trip to Como Europe » Italy » Lombardia » Como By MarcusRJuly 6th 2007 We headed out pretty early for Como as we wanted to spend as full a day as possible there. Como is a lake about 1 hours train journey north of Milan, on the border of Switzerland and is where Star Wars Episode 2 was filmed (the lovey dovey stuff on the lake). Como is just absolutely stunning, everything is just so well kept. We booked our boat trip around the lake but it didnt leave until 1215 so we had a bit of time to have a wander about and take in the scenery. The boat trip was about 2 hours, returning us back to Como. Some of the properties and villages we saw wer... read more

And she,s back... :-) How is Canada, my darlings?? I,m almost half done my trip and I feel like I,ve been gone for months. I,m having such a great time, but I do miss the familiarity of home and the comfort of family and friends. Know that I am thinking of you (and hoping you will all decide to move to Italy so that my life will be easier!) Sorrento and area was FABULOUS, and Janelle and Neal and I had such a good time together...more days of incredible experiences (and more bearable weather - I just got back to Milan and it,s just too hot!) I,m having trouble picking my favourite place (or even narrowing it down to say 5 or 6) in this country full of fantastic towns, beaches, mountains, and churches - they ... read more

I,m more than a week behind in blogging! Its hard to find Internet access in small towns (also hard to find the punctuation on this keyboard!) I,ve so enjoyed reading the comments people are making - thank you! Makes me feel connected and like I am not so far away. I,ve had a conversation on the phone with my Mom, but other than that, have not had a conversation in English for a week! My Italian is improving (or at least I am becoming so hungry, thirsty, and in need of a toilet, that I make myself understood *ha ha*). Today I successfully asked for the appropriate train tickets, ordered lunch, bought some books, and found the Internet cafe! Hurrah! Tomorrow I meet up with Janelle and Neal - my friends from Hazelton (also teachers) who ... read more

I had an easy time finding my way to Italy... navigating in small-town Italia without speaking much Italian is a challenge, however! Although both my English and Italian friends agree that speaking Italian is a matter of adding "o" "a" or "ione" to the end of (boring) English words... however, understanding these and being able to respond is more complicated! I often revert to French in a panic... "oui...c'est beau..." Egads! My blank face and the horror in my eyes is often enough for people to start gesturing rather than speaking to me, and it goes easier for all of us! Sometimes I will practice a phrase many, many times along with my voice translator and when I go to say it I get it wrong... but I'm working on it! I took an air-conditioned bus ... read more

Ciao ragazzi!!

Today we went to Verenna by train (again). We got in pretty late, and the station was so tiny, we had to get off the train, straight onto the tracks and walk along them for about 500m in the dark! The weather is cooler now, the jackets and jumpers are coming out. The weather is not that grand either. Looks like our luck has run out! Verenna is a tiny little town on the edge of Lake Como. It's a pretty wee place, but it's only real function is to deliver people by train to the lakes district. We checked into our accom (typical 1 star Italian affair, no lift, tiny room, paper thin walls) and headed downstairs for a beer in the pub below the hotel. We then took a quick stroll around the town ... read more
