In the slightly overcast balmy morning, with barely any sleep but fully energized, my date, I board a ferry at Cadenabbia, a town just south of Menaggio, with the destination Bellagio. Many travel programs and books have been published about this region. It is not hard to imagine why. This is the land of Leonardo Da Vinci and Michaelangelo. When the ferry is about at the midpoint between Cadenabbia and Bellagio, the view before me is beyond fantastic. The mountains in this region are confident mountains. They are not shy. They go straight up without any hesitation. It creates amazing backdrops for the colorful coastal towns along the shores. And these coastal towns are separated from the inland towns by these giants. The steep brows and the meandering coast lines make it impossible for the road ... read more

HOT DAY We woke up early and went to the Acropolis today! And Zeus’ palace. Cost was supposed to be 12 euro which included about eight different sights but everyone except for me got in for free since they had European student ID cards, and I only had to pay 6 euro since I had my old American student ID card. So amazing to see these places that we have studied since we were little! We were all sooo poor; my stupid bank still won’t let me withdraw money. So I kept borrowing money from Amanda and Shannon, bless those girls. I felt like such a bum! All day we just ate sesame circle bread things that remind me of bagels and only cost 60 cents each. Then in the afternoon we took our bus to ... read more

Hi All Today we travelled to Switzerland via Lake Como - sometime home of Mr George Clooney. Anita has assured me that we are visiting because the lake is supposed to be beautiful, and for no other reason! Drive was pretty easy once we found a non-automated fuel station to fill up at. I now know the offical motorway speed is 130km, so we can also get there at speed - they don't have it on any of the signs. Como is another very old town with a historic walled village in the centre. The lake is nestled in an incredible deep walled valley. It really is beautiful- the photos don't do it justice. Very large and expensive looking villas line the shore and the valley wall. We took a short cruise on the Lake, the ... read more

I jumped on the early train to lake Como this morning. With my camera packed and my iPod charged I was very much looking forward to the trip to the town that many of you would know as George Clooney’s home away from home. The mayor of Como recently said of George Clooney “To mister Clooney we gave the honorary citizenship. We all are proud of his choice to live here on Lake Como." Clooney’s arrival might be popular with some however I get the impression that many don’t like what he brings - the paparazzi and the additional tourists. (See picture below!) Inspired by the night at the opera I select the Best of Verdi on the iPod. Verdi’s music was inspirational even if the views outside of suburban Milano were not. A slow start ... read more

Its funny, isn't it, that when you ask someone the directions to the station they explain that its just around the corner, and not actually a kilometre away like you thought. Note: ask directions more frequently. Our train trip was 4 hours but that did include quite a few stops. We arrived in Como at about 4 in the afternoon, giving us enough time to drag our battered suitcases (clack clack, you know the story by now) to our hotel and hit the town to see whats whats and where is where. Lake Como is almost in Switzerland, and the area around it has a distinctly alpine flavour. We were close to the waterfront and the small port so we walked a few kilometres along the shore admiring the picturesque views from several sides of the ... read more
