Today we are going to Como. We passed through Como on the way into Switzerland going to Lugano, but today we were going to return because the city is small, lots of shops and beautiful views. It seems as this entire trip, as someone commented, is eating our way across Europe. The other thing I might point out i s, while that might be the way I write, the other side of that coin is I feel like I've walked across Europe. Walking, climbing up stairs, going down stairs and more walking has been the active part of every day, except the days we hold a bus seat down for 8 to 10 hours moving around Italy and into Switzerland. The food has been great. Except for one place, every place we have eaten has been ... read more

Day 24, Thursday, June 5 This is our last full day of spending the day in one place without traveling so we took the slow boat ferry from Como to Bellagio on Lake Como. The one-way trip takes 2 hours. The ferry makes about 8 stops on the way and it is a wonderful way to see all the small towns that are nestled right next to the Lake. Lakeside are very large villas and we overheard a guide tell his customers where George Clooney’s villa is and it was not long before everyone on the ferry was snapping pictures of a large home on the side of the Lake. For all we know it could belong to anyone but it made for a good story. As the ferry reached Bellagio we could see the five ... read more

Day 22, Tuesday, June 3 Our last full day at the farm stay and the weather was very nice so we decided to hang out there for the morning and then venture out after the afternoon siesta break when all the stores reopen. Our first stop was the blog bench to post our latest blog and check email. Our next stop was a spot Jim noticed on our way to Parma a few days earlier, another cheese and cured meat store called Fattoria. The store specializes in cured meats of all kinds but also sells Parmesan cheese of various ages, and local wines. Jim was surprised to find the store had shopping carts and he wished he could fill one up and take it all home. Unfortunately U.S. Customs laws do not allow cured meats to ... read more

Como 29th September Train to Como via Arth Goldau. We picked up the fast train from Zurich to Como (and beyond) at Arth Goldau. 95% of the journey was in Switzerland through dramatic alpine scenery. Unfortunately, very misty so we did not bother with photography as it would not have done it justice. Absolutely magnificent stuff. The Autobahns would criss-cross our train line regularly with sweeping loops disappearing into tunnels. In one location there was however a traffic jam that went for several kilometres beside the train and we felt quite smug in our fast moving cocoon. We are now in Italy! As the train draws into Como San Giovanni station we realise we are rather fatigued. Can we get a taxi? “Don’t be silly says Ron”. The hotel is very ... read more

Drove north to see the Italian lakes, namely Como. It was a hot day 34 degrees outside and about 50 degrees inside the car. With no air-condition, I was pretty hot all day driving in the car. I had to stop about 3 times as I don't want to overheat the engine. During my first motorway service station stops, I accidentally found that there was little or no transmission fluid (the transmission fluid was replaced about 2 months ago). This was something serious and had to be sorted out immediately. Without examining the car, I can only guess that it could be one of the following: 1. Leak 2. Mechanic failed to re-fill the transmission fluid when the radiator was re-cored about a month ago. I will see if I can find out what the problem ... read more

Back in the 16th century there was a traditional rite of passage; so to speak, that many young aristocrats took throughout Europe called the Grand Tour. The Grand Tour consisted of exploring the Europe and learning new topics that books or professors could not teach. Through first hand experience, students on the Grand Tour would learn about foreign culture, languages, and history by immersing themselves in new lands. The tour usually start in England, then went south passing through France and Italy, then coming back up through Switzerland, Germany, and the Netherlands. There was one city/region that was a little different from the rest. A city that was north of Milan in the Lake District, called Como. Como is a picturesque town that sits on the southern most tip of the Lake Como, and that is ... read more

Friday, 22nd June, 2012 Our trip yesterday from Monterosso al Mere to Milan to Como went without incident, apart from one train being 15 minutes late, but it didn’t impact us too much. On leaving Monterosso, for about half the distance (or 1 ½ hours) to Milan was through mountainous terrain, and Steve’s guess is that approximate 50 to 60% of the time was through tunnels, until we came to the agricultural flatlands south of Milan. After an hour and twenty minute stopover, during which we left the Milan train station to get some “real” food (as opposed to “Macca’s style”), we boarded the train to Como – a short trip of about 35 minutes. Como is an ancient town that has been in existence since early Roman times when it was an important crossing point ... read more

Why hello everybody! There aren’t many pictures that actually go with this blog, so I’ll add some from Italy and Spain :) My last day in Italy was relaxed and fun. Chiara and I slept in…again, haha, and then I got a bit more studying done for my finals this week. We stayed in our pajamas until about 3:00pm and finally had to put on real clothes to go over to her grandmother’s house. Every Sunday Claudia and her three sisters, Luisa, Pierangela, and Silvana get together with their mother, Anastasia, and aunt Giuseppia; have tea and some cake and just catch up, which I think is really sweet. Chiara said she usually goes about twice a month. They are just a bunch of really sweet ladies. I had met one of Chiara’s aunts, Pierangela, Sunday ... read more

Hi everyone! We have another birthday in the Fam! Happy Birthday Sean!!! I hope you have a lovely day today! :) Well, there is a lot of Italy to catch up on! On Tuesday Chiara had to get up very, very early to go to school, so I stayed home and slept in. After breakfast, Claudia asked me if I would like to see their garden. I hadn’t even noticed the gate at the end of their drive way. I expected just a small garden with a few veggies and herbs, nope! It’s huge! It’s like a whole other backyard! They don’t just have plants either, they have a little aviary with a few very colorful birds, and they even have chickens and roosters. Now, unlike in Cádiz and in Costa Rica, these birds and roosters ... read more

Hello again from Italia! First off, there is another Birthday! Happy Birthday Grandma Barbara!!! I really hope you have a wonderful day and I am sending you a Birthday Hug from here in Italy!!! Yesterday was another wonderful day with Chiara’s family! We got to sleep in again because Chiara’s friends were coming here for lunch and so we didn’t have to get ready to go anywhere! Chiara, Laura and I had already done our part of helping out with the lunch today by getting the Christmas tree up. Chiara is a master at setting it up, perhaps we should send her over to Nebraska to help my Dad since he has to keep inventing ways to get our Christmas tree to stand straight ever year, hahaha! But the important thing is that it is up…it’s ... read more
