We had to be up bright and early to pack up the bus and leave Rome. We took a nice drive (about 3 hours) down to Naples (or Napoli, to the Italians). We really only saw the city as we drove through to the port, since it was not our main destination. At the port, we boarded a hydrofoil boat and went approximately 45 minutes across the water to the tiny island of Capri. In Capri, we took a small caravan of taxis up the narrow and winding roads to the top of the mountain. This ride was somewhat scary, since it didn't really seem that the roads were wide enough for 2-way traffic! Let's just say that it was a fun - albeit occasionally tense - ride! At the top of the mountain, we ... read more

From Pompeii, I returned to Amalfi along the famous Amalfi Coast road, said by some to be the most beautiful road in the world. As it was a weekend, the road was clogged with four-wheeled tourist traffic. This isn’t a problem in Italy on a motorcycle as you simply straddle the center line, select the appropriate gear…and motivate. I must have passed a thousand cars stuck in traffic…two wheels are the only way to go! ... read more

My blogs will now be less frequent as I no longer have free internet, but I wanted to share a little bit about my weekend. It took almost all day but we arrived in the beautiful town on Vico Equense. We took many wrong trains but ended up on a camp ground staying in a bungalow. Thats right folks I said camping. We shared our bungalow with many spiders who met their fate. We walked to the square that was beautiful and right on the sea. You could see Capri. It was amazing. We lost most of our group to hotel so just Lisa and I braved the bugalow. We had a great (cheap) dinner and wine. I slept in sweats as not to get eaten. I woke up refreshed, we ate breakfast outside where ... read more

After pottering about in the south, I became concious of time running out on my vacation so I made the decision to put in some miles on the autostrada. Normally, freeways are meant to make time and not very scenic however, that’s not the case with the A3. Cutting through beautiful mountains, the A3 offers visual delights with enough sweeping bends to keep things interesting. As freeways go, you could do a lot worse than the A3. After a day on the autostrada, I had reached the famed Amalfi coast. I had an interest in Amalfi since my father spent time there during World War II. My father fought in the war as a member of the Royal Canadian Artillery that was involved in the forgotten Italian campaign. After being wounded, he was sent to recover ... read more

Hey, Sorry it has been a while since I have written. We have been on the go so much I havent had much time to chill and write. Last I left off we were just leaving Rome. When we woke up in the morning we went straight to the train station headed for Naples. While on the train I started to read about how shady Naples was and how you have to watch your belongings at all time. I started to get a little sketched out. Also my back was really bothering me all day so I was in no mood!! When we finally arrived in Naples we realized that we were actually staying at a hostel like 30 minutes out of this city in a small town called Portichi. We could not for the ... read more

These computers are terrible. I just wrote something and then clicked on menu to get another site open and it closed all the windows, so now I must start over. On Saturday we docked in Naples, Italy. Mom, sisters, Matt and I decided to take a hydrofoil over to the Island of Capri. Dad stayed and explored Naples. The boat ride was about 40 minutes and luckily none of us got sick because it was pretty darn rocky at times. Once on the island we took a cab up to the city center area. Capri is a playground for the rich and famous. It was very crowded with tourists, but we didn't see anyone famous. There is basically any designer store you can imagine. We looked around a few of them but didn't buy anything ... read more

Wow, today was interesting. Long story short, we climbed a volcano (yes, we took it upon ourselves to exercise) and visited Pompei. Mt. Vesuvius was amazing! It was quite a hike. Just as in Athens, it started raining. From the ship the weather seemed to be alright, so there we were standing at the bottom of the volcano in shorts and tank tops shivering. Luckily (as we found in well, ALL of the ports), there was someone nearby waiting to sell us Italia jackets. From Vesuvio we went to the Pompei excavation site. HUGE place. We had an interesting tour guide to say the least. He had a different type of "tour" in mind for us though. He told us to meet him at a certain destination and to turn "left" to meet him and ... read more

Monday, our last full day, was a daytrip to Paestum. Once again, we just barely missed a train, and had to wait an hour for the next. I was surprised that it was an hour and forty-five minute ride, but we didn't have to change trains in Salerno. The train we took seemed to stop at every little station along the way. So we arrived shortly after noon, and headed straight for lunch first. We found a fairly nice resaturant, though not too expensive. Paestum is supposed to have the best mozzerella-- there were several buffalo farms and processing plants nearby-- so we ordered an appetizer of mozzerella and prochiuto instead of the usual caprese. The mozzerella was so freesh that it was still making juices. It was a bit too watery for our tastes, but ... read more
