No bus to Vesuvius This is not a regular travelblog of mine, but I was reminded of our experience of Italian taxi-drivers when I read Shaheema Shaw's blog "Madam, Only Rs.40 to Nowhere" about a Chennai auto-driver. This was way back in the summer of1989 when we had taken a Eurail tour. We had planned to visit Vesuvius that day and had arrived at the Ercolano Scavi station from Naples. It was about 2:15 PM and I had read from Fodor's that there are regular buses to the top of Vesuvius every 2 hours. (No widespread Internet usage in India in those days.) We wanted to take the 2:30 PM bus. Ercolano was a sleepy little station in those days. There were only three taxis outside the station. As soon as we stepped out of the ... read more

Trip to ItalyJulie J Vanover So, after my almost 2 whole days of traveling I arrived in Naples. I traveled 4 hours from Athens to Patras on the train, then had to wait 3 hours for the ferry so I decided to explore Patras a little. Well, they had an old Greek ruin, so headed there up the steep city streets and then climbed 11 flights of stairs with my backpack on in the heat. Ugh, but the view was amazing, I could see all across the bay at the many craggy islands. Then I took a 16 hour ferry ride to Bari Italy which actually was not too bad. I talked to a guy named Peter that I met on the train from Australia. He is a 60 something coal miner that reminded my of ... read more

Well, I hate to say it, but I have found a place I hate. And it happens to be in a country I love. Naples is crap! Seriously, they should warn you about this and say No. Just Don't Go There. But they don't and here we are. Naples is terrible, but first, a little bit about our last few days in London... After a couple of days of pure recovery from the Contiki we set about being tourists again and went to the Tower of London. It is expensive, £16 to be exact, but totally worth it. The Tower of London was built by William *is that his name?* the Conqueror who decided that he would build himself a defence fort right up against the eastern wall of London, which was established by the ... read more

Saturday: I got up at 5:30 to get ready for my trip to Pompeii. Matt and Tommy ended up going with me on the group trip, getting to go for free since several people didnt show who had already paid for a spot. We played cards and slept most of the way there--the scenery on the drive was beautiful, many more mountains than our area! When we arrived in Pompeii we took a guided tour of the city, which was really neat but somewhat abbreviated because of the rain that started about the same time we arrived. We got to see the house of Romulus and Remus and a ton of really neat artificats while in the city as well as touring all throughout. After the tour we went to a nearby resturant where they had ... read more

The “Monuments” of Avellino take about twenty minutes to see. There’s the clock tower in the Old Town, Il Duomo (the domed church) and a fountain. If you are looking for tourist attractions and to take pictures of grand cathedrals and famous statues, skip Avellino head straight to Rome and get your camera ready. But if you want a true Southern Italian experience pull off of the autostrade and take the small, winding road inland to Avellino. Here you will get a taste of Italian hospitality at its finest and some of the most amazing food in the world. In Avellino, you don’t observe Italy; you live it. The village of Avellino is at the foot of a valley just a forty minute drive from Naples, or Napoli in Italian. I had expected country bumpkins and ... read more

Arriving into the Napoli train station around noon was the start of our southern Italy adventure. We had previously made the decision to pass Pompeii and go straight to Sorrento on a very, very “ghetto” local train. However once we passed out of the direct Napoli area and closer into the Sorrento Coast the views became more pleasant. As the train was nearly at its destination Joye and I decided to have a little pull up contest that turned into hanging from our legs inside the train, while being stared out by the locals that still remained on the train. The first thing on our minds was the beach, but Bailey who as been in Sorrento before explained the beach was a hike away. So, instead we found the tourist information place and ate some ... read more

The first nights in Avellino were difficult. To say that I was homesick is not sufficient. I had lived abroad before, and loved it. But it had been so long since I had been truly independent. I had become too reliant on my relationship, which was one of the reasons that I left, but I had not prepared myself for how truly alone I would be. There is a thin line between independence and loneliness, and I was terrified that I had crossed it. An even bigger fear was that I had permanently lost a part of myself by relying on someone else for too long. The second night I walked up and down the streets—there was a fair and vendors were set up selling everything from antiques to toys to children’s books. I was relieved ... read more

“What the hell am I doing!” I thought as I walked through airport security, turning to watch my family waving frantically. I looked at my boyfriend, standing with my family, fitting in so perfectly with my life, and a current of fear ran through me. What the hell was I doing! Leaving the man who for the past year and a half had been everything to me, the relationship that everyone envied and said was perfect, including me. He was perfect for me. We had a background of friendship, five years of friendship actually, during which we learned all of each others quirks and flaws and accepted them along with trust, love and an understanding of one another that we had not been able to find with anyone else. We didn’t have much in common, okay ... read more

Fridays LOW: That stupid hostel rule. Fridays HIGH: Much needed girl talk. We slept in Friday because the weather wasnt going to be good, but eventually I got up andd grabbed breakfast for mom and I from the Bar Internazionale at the corner. One thing that bothers me here is that they dont really do coffee to go. The coffee is amazing, but its done as like espresso and therefore doesnt come in the big cup you can enjoy for more than a minute. Anyways, I spilt coffee on myself on the way back to the hostel. When I came back, Lucy (the girl who works at the hostel) gave me a funny look. She then came to tell me that they have a 10am-2pm lock out to clean. Not knowing this I had to tell ... read more

Thursdays LOW: Getting up so early. Thursdays HIGH:The beach! So Mom and I got up at an early hour on Thursday to get to Positano early and have the whole day. We checked out, got to the bus station, and rode to Positano. It was about 40 mins long and was really beautiful on the coast, but i was just soooo tired. It was really sharp turns and narrow roads right on the edge so it was freaky. We got to the town and tried to find the hostel I had booked for us. After asking directions we found it and checked in. Hostel Brikette was gorgeous, bright white, art deco type tile floors, white patio, huge windows and a beautiful view of the town. Plus, they had a puppy there and he was soooo cute. ... read more
