Ciao a tutti! Sorry it's been such a long time between posts. My last week in Rome went very quickly, and here is Salerno it's not nearly as easy to get on the net. Still trying to work out how I'll do this since there's sooo much to say, but strap yourselves in and let's just see what happens, hmm? edit: I've tried to split it up in parts because this is turning out to be the blog entry to end all blog entries, so I wish you good luck!! Have also tried to put as many pretty piccys as possible to distract you along the way! But please remember: Stop, Revive, Survive! Part 1 - ROME Well Marianne and Sybille left on my last full weekend in Rome, which was a bit sad. The new ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Amalfi October 18th 2006

We've decided that we prefer northern Italy (Tuscany area) to the south. The rugged terrain of the Amalfi area makes it incredibly difficult to move between places. Positano is only 8 kilometers from Sorrento and it took us almost 2 hours to get there. (Of course, our hotel is 9 kilometers from Sorrento.) Part of that is due to waiting for the Sita (a.k.a. wheeled sardine cans). One comes but doesn't stop because it's full. So we wait for another opportunity. This is the slow season, we can't imagine what this is like during the summer! Anyway, the roller coaster ride to Positano is about the same as any two-laner in the Colorado mountains, except there are no pull-offs or truck run-away ramps. The road is probably narrower than in Colorado, which makes the buses seem ... read more

We've realized that our diary dates don't correspond to the actual date we are journaling. Sorry if that has been confusing. Also, creating these journals has been quite a learning experience. The European keyboard is not the same as the US, so several of the non-alpha keys are in different places. For example, the @ symbol shares a key with ò and ç We have to use a separate ALT GR key to use the #. The apostrophe shares the ? key and is on the top row. Parens are on 8 and 9. So there are lots of typos to fix before we can publish for your reading piacere. We added shower photos to the 16 Ottobre journal. OK, on to Sunday, 15 Ottobre. Sundays have been good to us. First there was San Marco ... read more

Hate to say it, but it was a gas watching these guys, dozens of 'em, hawking their goods on the street, carrying it all in a big bundle, setting up, then in a moment's notice, scurrying away, when they saw a cop - guess they are 'unofficial', so they're always on the run... is comical to watch, although I did feel sorry for the poor guys. They're only trying to make a living ! ... read more

although you gotta learn to think like a neopolitan (?)... I caught on soon enough, I think. it happened as I was waiting with about 30 other people to cross a street.... the cars were such like a tributary of a river feeding steadily into a larger river. no one dared attempt to cross- so there we all were, sort of paralized, until a man with a pair of rubber boots up to his knees with a pizza box in his hand, nonchanlantly walks out into the street without looking. It was sort of like Jesus walking on the water... then I thinks... hey, this isn't Kern County, and those arn't milking boots.... he's a fisherman !! And yeahh, he knew how to 'go with the flow' in Napoli... read more

Welcome to the travel day from hell - 14 Ottobre. It started out wonderfully in Cernobbio as we caught the 8:53 AM to Milano. Arriving in Milano on time, we had 1/2 hour to transfer to the Eurostar for Napoli. Again, a piece of cake. During the 7 hour ride in 1st class, we enjoyed the conversation of other Americans before they disembarked in Firenze or Roma. Even lunch in the dining car was OK, although expensive (€26 each): a farfalle pasta, and tacchino e funghi (turkey with mushrooms.) It's amazing how skillful the servers were, plating each dish at the table from a platter. Not a drop was spilled on the tablecloth. Remember, the train is moving at speeds in excess of 40 mph. Aside: it's mushroom harvesting season, so the porcinis are plentiful and ... read more

...treat your feet to a good soaking. Featured here is my world class award winning bunion. Another good reason to travel while you can- you never know what will hit you when you're in your 50's. I know you're dying to know how I got it. It was a few years ago, sitting peacefully up at my foothill property reading a book. I was sitting in one of those folding chairs that are not easy to get out of, you know, the kind with the drink holders on each side. In my periferal vision I saw enough of a movement that caused me to press the internal eject button- and I LEVETATED out of the chair, balanced on nothing else but the ball of left foot. In a flash i am up looking at a king ... read more

as a garbage hunter - (yes, my eyes are constantly distracted with the remnants of human waste and dispose lining the streets, sidewalks and city walls), Napoli is a complete heaven of filth. With a flood of intense, inspiring, raw urban energy, there is not another city ..of course, made this way. It always greets me with a smother of a sour, sweaty, big bosomed embrace. One that is intensely too tight, and uncomfortably pungent, however enjoyable because of the honest adoration behind it all. So today i am here and happy. The last month has been a whirlwind solo tour of Poland, Romania, Hungaray and Czech Republic....it was good too, but i cannot even start with that quite yet. i just want to show today to you. because tomorrow i will leave Napoli on ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Capri September 24th 2006

Today we woke up, checked out of the hostel, and hopped on the ferry to Capri. I was sea-sick on the ferry and felt like a big ol’ crab apple. Jamie just kept telling me I was glamorous like a pouty movie star, but I felt anything but fabulous. Anyways, we got off (on the right island) and bought tickets for the Funicolore—the tram that takes you to the top of the island. It was so beautiful. My mother and sister are both awesome painters and I took a ton of pictures for them because it really is a painters’ dream there. We got off at the top and my little crab-apply self was hungry. We stopped at the first restaurant we saw, Capri’s Ristorante. I would have eaten there anyways, but the driving incentive was ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Naples September 23rd 2006

September 23 Today we went into Naples. We said good-bye to our beautiful, movie-star hotel. First we had to climb up to the top to take pictures. It was even more amazing from the top! We started off in Naples at the Napoli Museo Archeologico Nazionale. This was probably one of my favorite museums yet. It was so cool and really well designed. It had some amazing collections, including a temporary exhibit on the riches found in Pompeii. It always amazes me to see things that survive centuries. We got permission to go to the famous “Secret Cabinet” there. Everyone was making fun of me because I had asked Emilio to take us there because I had heard about it, and I really was just curious, not for a pervy reason. But basically the “Secret ... read more
