We spent ALL day yesterday just to get from Nice to Naples. 3 hours to Genova, Italy... a 2 hour layover there..... then 9 hours from Genova to Naples. The first train ride was great, we sat with two Australians who were so fun to talk to and the time flew by. The whole train ride was right on the coast so it was so beautiful as well. Then we had a layover in Genova and hopped on the next train to Naples. This ride was not so great. Our car was the only one with a broken air conditioner, and the heat was stifling. Everyone around us was upset and yelling at the staff, but we didnt understand what was going on until the guy next to us translated for us. We arrived in Naples ... read more

Hello to one and all! We are in Sorrento right now, it is beautiful. Cute little resort town with everyother person being a British tourist. This place is right on the coast, beautiful shores and views of Mt. Vesouvious (oh dear that is really spelled wrong... sorry). Sadly we are only here for 2 days, today we are just sort of wandering. Getting the lay of the land and checking out all the side streets, doing the tourist thing. Tomorrow we are going to Pompei (sp?) to check out the volcanic ruins and take a ride up to the top of the volcano to see the lava! Should be cool. Monday we are heading out, early (groan), to get to Bari asap to get a place on the ferry to go to Patras, Greece that night. ... read more

Naples and Capri, Italy: Note to self: DO NOT EVER GO BACK TO NAPLES! Talk about having the wrong idea, we were so wrong about Naples! We were expecting to get off the train and find a quaint beach town with trees, beaches, and blue water, and what we found were gypsies, homeless people, and trash! The weather was great, but the city was in terrible condition. (If you can call it a city!) There really was no city center, and not much to do there at all! But we figured that we couldn’t be entirely misinformed, so we were trying to give it a shot and make the best of it. Our first night in the city, we went to the Galleria Umberto near a place called Piazza Municipio that is supposedly fun for young ... read more

The morning of the 16th, I (Melissa) took a bus from Sorrento to Rome to catch a few sights that we missed out on our super adventure. I added some pictures from our adventure in Rome on Wednesday and our day in Capri in the previous blogs. Today I have spent much of the day walking and getting to know the Metro in Rome. I arrived early around 900 am and found a hotel for the night close to the termini so that in the morning I can hop a quick train to the airport. Then my adventures lead me to Vatican City. After adventuring on the Metro, I walked up to the vast walls of the City I was already amazed and was excited to venture inside the walls. The line was not something I ... read more

We had decided to head across to Sicily for a week as we had heard it was an interesting place. On our way to the ferry we stopped at Palmi, another coastal village. My grandmother used to go there for her holidays from Plati. It was a beautiful spot but the town was very busy! We were a little sad leaving Calabria as we felt we should have spent longer there. Sicily was a new adventure…in more ways than we thought. We arrived in Messina just after lunch and had planned to head down the east coast towards Taomina and Siracusa. We drove along the coast disappointed at the beaches and towns we went through. Taomina was very busy and situated on top of a very high hill. We drove briefly through and decided it was ... read more

On the 15th, Als, KJ and I (melissa) headed off to Capri from Sorrento. Capri is the Island of the Sirens or Mermaids, depending on how you translate. We arrived via ferry (just when we thought we had taken our last ferry!) after 20 minutes. We grabbed our One day, whole island pass and took the cable car up to Capri. A quick stop in Capri determined we wanted to head to Anicapri to go to the top of Capri and then to the Blue Grotto. Both were AMAZING. After the chairlift ride you arrive at the top and you can really see the beauty and what adds to the splendar is the birds in the background! The island is full of lush vegetation and is surronded by the amazing waters. The Blue Grotto is the ... read more

“Oh my God, it’s a dam slalom course!” Franchesca swore, as we wound our little Ford up the back side of the mountain. She then mumbled a new mantra “I hate you” meaning me, under her breath. I smiled and bit my lip, trying hard to keep my always miss understood nervous laughter in check. I sunk lower in my seat, deciding it was best not to tell her what lay ahead. This was the really easy part. Once we got over the mountain the training wheels would have to come off. Having been to Positano before, I had knowingly risked our friendship and quite possibly our lives for one of the most dangerous, but beautiful drives on earth. As we exited the tunnel at the crest of the mountain, the deep blue of the Med ... read more

Hi Guys, Well I have finally made it and I am in Italy. I flew into Naples Sunday and caught the bus direct to Sorrento. Sorrento is nice, but a rather large city, something I have been dying to get away from! So after a night in a WET tent in Sorrento I am now in Gorgeous Positano. This place is so beautiful. Words can't begin to describe it! It is set high on the hills above the most magnificent blue water. You wander down cobble stone paths to reach the beaches and main town, and it's truly worth the 15 minutes of stairs. Well I say that, but had a big fall coming home last night and have taken a fair chunk of skin off my knee and foot....Italian wine for you! So far I ... read more

Amalfi Is Beautiful I must lie. I am not currently in Amalfi. I was never in 'Amalfi' ... just on the Amalfi Coast! I'm in Salerno. It was not on the list, and I forget how to add to the list. I've had a pretty good few days. I met some great people in Florence - Kate, Mike, and Mark - and partied the last two nights I had in Florence with them. Kate is originally from Hawaii, but is studying in upper New York State, so not too far from me. Mike and Mark are from Northern California, so farther. We went out for dinner the first night we met, and then to a bar. It was a Monday night, so apparantly, no clubs were on as they had closed the bottom level that contained ... read more

It started in Pellezzano-(Close to Salerno, in Southern Italy): a town on a hill, with a convent, post office, and general store. We had 4-15 year old students. While Nadia (from London) tried to teach the bambini colors in English (when they did not know the difference between orange and pink in Italian) I worked with the way cool adolescents, translating Red Hot Chili Peppers “scar tissue” (not to mention every pop song) and discussing politics, history, family and aspirations. They were a wild, sweet, and charming crew; the most hugs and kisses were received here. The Nuns (oh sweet Antonella) fed us warm cauldrons of creamy pasta. The bells rang every fifteen minutes and prayer hymns were graciously bellowed through piercing speaker phones at 8 in the morning. Every night the garden danced with fireflies ... read more
