Naples is useful as a base for visiting the surrounding attractions. These include Pompeii, a 9th century Roman ruin that has been perfectly preserved and visited by tourists alike. Further south lies the beautiful and rugged Amalfi coast, a summer resort and haven for the wealthy. Accessible by an hours ferry ride is also the island of Capri. ... read more

Chapter 19 Oh Capri, the elusive island! The weather had improved vastly, and Capri was finally on the agenda for the day. They headed down to the harbour to catch one of the fast ferries. (11.60 euros return). The ferries were rather spacious, with many airline style seats facing a giant television screen churning out more crap Italian programmes. (they really are that bad) One could only stand on the deck at the back of the boat, as a salty spray massaged an already wet face. As the boat left Sorrento, the propelling motion made the very calm sea a little choppy, churning Maya’s stomach immediately. She quickly grabbed her trilogy and tried to concentrate on hobbits. Martin stayed on deck trying to capture the views on film. Twenty five minutes later, they arrived at Capri’s ... read more

Chapter 18 Capri eludes them once more They woke up, ready to head for a day trip to Capri, but when the curtains were opened, the skies had also opened and torrential rain was pouring down the hill. The orange and lemon groves were being whip-lashed by the wind and any thoughts of Capri were pretty much blown away with every gust. The bay of Naples wasn’t even visible, the island of Ischea had vanished as a mist had descended on the whole bay. There was absolutely no chance they were going to Capri that day, the walk down the hill would have been treacherous, just a long mud slide. They stayed in bed for a while longer, and waited for the rain to retreat. It did eventually stop raining, and later that afternoon they headed ... read more

Chapter 17 Capri that never was! The hill walk from the night before had well and truly knocked our two travellers for six as the plan had been to go to Capri but both of them simply couldn’t face getting up. They were now into their 17th day since leaving and finally some rest was required. The sun was shining, the cockerel was crowing (a real one without batteries), but to no avail, our two were totally shattered. A lie in was needed and that’s exactly what they did until mid-day. They spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing, listening to music, reading and enjoying the views from the balcony, as the island of Ischea was clearly visible that day. In fact they stayed at the B&B until five in the evening. The Italian television programmes ... read more

Chapter 16 A seaside rendezvous with the little Hobo. Breakfast was left outside the room, though by the time they actually got up, the coffee was rather cold though the freshly squeezed orange juice was delicious and the milk wasn’t half-bad either. Back down the hill again, they looked forward to exploring the delights of Sorrento. However the town was pretty much closed until 4.00pm, forcing our two to spend some of that time sending emails from yet another English pub (run by Italians). Several cappuccinos later they headed for the new port. A steep set of steps led them down to a very small enclave, extremely picturesque, where the ferries and jetfoils hurried in and out of the harbour with no detrimental effect to the peaceful views of the harbour. Nearby an restaurant with outdoor ... read more

Chapter 15 The road to nowhere (or a bridge too far) They left the hotel after Martin had purchased a fabulous new digital camera with movie mode and lots of other interesting functions. The receptionist at the hotel didn’t even have the decency to say thank you and goodbye. This just angered them further, yet made them even more eager to leave this dump, roll on Mount Vesuvius! Using the circumvensia within an hour they would be in Sorrento. Once more they saw the accordion boy with his brother this time as they entertained the masses of solemn looking commuters. As predicted, an hour or so later of trundling through Naples’ suburbs, they arrived at Sorrento. Sorrento is situated in the north of the Sorrentina peninsula, standing on high cliffs above the bay of Naples. The ... read more

Chapter 14 The quest for Napoli’s nice bit! Two weeks had flown by as they contemplated the trip so far over yet another extremely good breakfast. They were determined to give Naples another go and try to go with the flow of the traffic. Surely there must be some positives and they were determined to seek it out! The first stop as had been planned was the Archaeological Museum, just off Via Dante. It was Sunday the 15th February and the traffic didn’t seem too bad, maybe St.Valentine had kept them all away. The museum at 13 euros each offered a treasure trove of mainly Roman and Greek findings. Set on two floors and a basement, this huge showcase offered some fabulous exhibits. The best ones being the mosaics, the mummified mummies and the secret cabinet ... read more

Chapter 13 Up Pompeii - Titter ye not!!! A most excellent breakfast was consumed, finally a positive. They headed to Stazione Garribaldi where they caught the circumvensia to Herculaneum. A kind of over-ground underground, extremely cheap but had seen better days, the circumvensia connected Naples to Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast. As they alighted at Herculaneum station, they were immediately mobbed by taxi drivers offering to take them up to Mount Vesuvius and back for 10 euros each. The bus only cost 4 euros so once more they politely refused and headed for the ruins of Herculaneum. Eighteen euros for a combined ticket which included Pompeii and four other sights. Just down the road from the station they arrived at the gates of Herculaneum. Tourist Site 17: Herculaneum History: With Vesuvius brooding on the horizon any ... read more

Chapter 12 Back in old Napoli - that’s appalling They left the hostel and caught the 8.53am Eurostar from Florence to Naples via Rome. The train was not quite it’s English equivalent but very comfortable nonetheless (and more leg room). Rather bizarrely this was the first Eurostar Martin had taken since leaving the company (Eurostar UK LTD.) back in December. He headed to the bar and went to order some drinks, to be met by a young girl called Raffael who used to work on board the Eurostar back in the UK. What a very small world it was as they reminisced about the people back in London. What were the chances of that! Once more, the landscapes were spectacular especially between Rome and Naples. Three hours later they found themselves pulling into Napoli Centrale. Positoned ... read more

Computer ate my blog again... doh... anyways, yesterday Tania, Lauren Rob and I, running on about 2.5 hours of sleep... maybe 3 each, went to Pompei to see us some ruins. We had meant to sleep but there was a little fiasco with an Alanis Morrisette concert we didnt know about, a bus on a tow truck and the Rome night bus service with kept sleep away from us. Dont take the night busses in Rome, thats the moral of the story, just make sure at 11pm, you are walking distance to your final destination. Not that the MetRo is anything fantastic, but it does run the heated cars regurally. Pompei was aweome... lots of buildings and walls, still covered in ash to an extent, so it was quite dirty and dusty, but so awesome to see ... read more
