Naples is useful as a base for visiting the surrounding attractions. These include Pompeii, a 9th century Roman ruin that has been perfectly preserved and visited by tourists alike. Further south lies the beautiful and rugged Amalfi coast, a summer resort and haven for the wealthy. Accessible by an hours ferry ride is also the island of Capri.
