This won't be a very long update, as we didn't really do much of any excitement today, but I felt I had to write since I was finally able to get onto my own computer from our hotel room. It's very nice to actually know where all of the keys are. Today we took the train from Florence to Naples and then into Salerno. We decided to drag our bags from our apartment to the train station again, although this time we knew where we were going, so it didn't take nearly as long. We had heard how aggressive the people in Naples were, trying to get you to take their taxis and such, so we were ready to fight back. I think we were all relieved (and maybe a little disappointed) to find that it ... read more

After a two hour train trip from Rome, we were pleasantly surprised to find a hotel with Air conditioning AND a bathroom. Now don't get me wrong the heat of Rome was the perfect excuse for the gelato and all but the fact that we had air conditioning just made my day. Anyway guess I forgot to mention that we have taken up the European custom of a siesta in the afternoon? Well, this is the best ever with AC. Back to Naples, it was quite a treat after the hustle of Rome to find Naples practically asleep. Since we made it in on a Sunday, we were able to just walk and enjoy the sights. We got some great shots of Mt. Vesuvius and the Castel Nuovo. Needing to get a late lunch we stopped ... read more

Well we were in Roma, but I didn't get to update. That place is just amazing. Everywhere you look there is something ancient....well at least in the "Ancient City." The first day we explored the Paletine Hill...the ticket to this was valid at the Colesium. That was very interesting. But not as nice as the Roman Forum...which was free...go figure. We also saw the Trajan Column. The campsite had a pool...so of course we partook. Oh and in less than an hour we saw two people get their wallets stolen. We held our bags very close to our bodies and survived intacked. We went to the Coliseum the next day. It was very nice. The best part was, because we bought our tickets the day before, we didn't have to wait in the hour-long line! I ... read more

Getting up at 6am isn't fun. To find that the bus which leaves at "7am sharp" is goign to be late is even less fun. This was a god send for a couple of guys though. They had one hell of a night partying, and a few looked like they had a night worth missing the bus for.... Luck was on our side, and traffic along the very narrow Amalfi Coast wasn't bad. When they built this road, they were obviously not thinking of the massive tour-buses that would exist a century or so later. I understand now why Busabout uses local drivers instead of their own - you'd have to be crazy AND fearless to drive a bus through a couple of the turns. Anyone with a fear of heights? Don't sit near a ... read more

The rich and famous know how to holiday - Capri is beautiful. We only had a day there (downside of being shepparded around in an organized tour). Got to see quite a bit though. We got on a boat tour around the island the minute we got off the ferry. I originally wasn't planning on visiting blue grotto (venus flytrap, tourist version). Couldn't help myself in the end though. It was just amazing watching these guys guide the tiny rowboats into miniscule hole. The entrance is completely covered by every wave, and the buys piloting the row boats have to time their entrance (via a pull-chain) perfectly. Oh yeah, did I mention that we had to lie flat down in the boat to avoid getting any limbs (or head) separated? I chose to do things in ... read more

I'm really glad I made the snap decision to take an excursion south. The tour is basing out of a campsite in Sorrento (Camping Santa Fortuna). Wisened by my experience in Venice, I opted for the best accomodation option available. The result was a dorm-style cabin with 4 beds in my room, a kitchen, private bathroom and fridge. It overlooks the swimming pool, and is overall quite nice for a campsite. Finally, I checked: there is hot water! The only downside will be mosquitoes, but those are inevitable anyways. I actually consider the place quite a steal (especially at 16 euro a night). We visited Pompeii on the way over. It was interesting, and impressive how well some of the city has been preserved. I was especially impressed to see the quality of Roman roads in ... read more

Ponza is one of 5 Pontine islands scattered across the Gulf of Gaeta. They are all volcanic in origin and only one besides Ponza is inhabited. They were virtually unknown until the flood of tourists swept down on the Bay of Naples and people came to Ponza to avoid the crowds at Capri. The town was small and very quaint. We enjoyed it because it was less commercialized than some of the other ports. We especially enjoyed the slower pace after Capri and the island's simple beauty. We took a cruise around the island after lunch and then the activities director created and excursion he called the Zodiac Safari of the Grottos of Ponza. This was one of the most fun activities of the trip because we got to actually get into the Mediterranian Sea and ... read more

Capri is truly a romantic island just a short cruise from the Sorrento peninsula. Once again, the pictures below tell the story better than anything. This was the most crowded port we visited and we were told it was actually pretty early in the season and not bad at all. The scenery and the tour up the mountains in a convertible taxi and then the chairlift were really pretty spectacular. The shopping was crowded and we only had the patience to buy a couple of things, a linen shirt for me and some perfume from the perfumery where Liz Taylor used to buy her perfume before she had her own line (per Suzy Gershman, of course). Enjoy the pictures.... read more

John Steinbeck, the famous American author lived in Positano in 1953 and wrote "Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that is not quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone. Its houses climb a hill so steep it would be a cliff except that stairs are cut in it. You do not walk to visit a friend , you either climb or slide." All of that and more is true of this once forgotten fishing village on the Amalfi coast. Sorrento was really great, but I think Positano tops it by a slight margin. After leaving the pier, you walk across a beautiful dark pebble beach known as the Spiaggia Grande, one of the few on the Sorrento peninsula. The beach is populated by an abundance of bikini's ... read more

Hi Everyone, Hope all is well! Today we sailed into Naples, Italy. We arrived at 7:00a. and we had a private van with a driver and a guide. First stop was Pompeii and here is a brief description from Mom: An ancient Roman town that was buried along with it's 2,000 residents in 79 AD when Mt. Vesuvius erupted and buried the town in ash and pumice and lava. Our guide explained all of this to me today as we walked through the town. I loved hearing about the history and I saw what I called "the zombies" which are acually preserved casts of actual victims of the eruption. It made me very sad to see them because you can see how frightened they were by looking at the expressions on their faces. They all looked ... read more
