Hello Everybody, Hope that everyone that shares this journal with me is doing well. Our trip is already more than 1/2 over. Today we are spending the entire day at sea on our way to Naples. In yesterday's journal entry I said that we were on our way to Rome, but that was a mistake; Rome is coming soon though! I spent the day resting because I didn't feel too great this morning, but I'm fine now. We have a great itinerary planned for tomorrow, Friday. We are going to have a private van, driver and guide, so we will have the opportunity to see and learn a lot since there is so much to see in the region we'll be in. I'm really looking forward to seeing Pompeii since mom has told me so much ... read more

Hey there, I figured I'd be smart this time and not leave posting an entry till the last few minutes of my internet time, and then get kicked off before I can post it. As you may have guessed, I'm still in Italy. I've enjoyed Rome for 5 days, and now I've been in Sorrento for 3. Rome was crazy, but awesome. I took two walking tours because I'm a dunce when it comes to understanding what I'm looking at. The first one covered most of the 'famous' sites, like the Colosseum, the Palantine and Roman Forum, the Pantheon, Trevi fountain, Piazza Venezia, Piazza Nuova, and Piazza Navona. The second one I did was for the old Jewish ghetto area and Trastevere, which is across the Tiber river. That one was really interesting more for the ... read more

Alright people, i got to see the ruins of pompeii which was really interesting. There were 4 casts and were pretty eerie because their arms were covering their faces and you could almost feel bad for them. Then we went to the Herculaneum which is further from Mt. Vesuvius so it was much more intacts and had tons of actual artifcats from 2000 years ago...really awesome. I took a bunch of pics so dont worry. Hmm...what else... we got some pizza and more gelato Ischia yesterday was really nice and i needed just a day to relax on the beach and not walking all over and seeing sights. The two girls Im traveling with are leaving tomorrow so I intend to head back up to Rome. 3 other people I met today at Pompeii are heading ... read more

We docked at Naples, which is about halfway between the ankle and the knee on Italy's boot. Cruising into the Bay of Naples we were greeted by the sight of a beautiful harbor city with the mighty Vesuvius dominating the view to the south. We were in Naples for only one day. We chose to spend our time ashore seeing the ruins of Pompeii, the town between Naples and Vesuvius that was buried under ashes and volcanic dust in the eruption of 79 AD. Excavation started in the 1700s when Pompeii was discovered and is still going on at several sites including nearby Herculaneum. The eruption of Vesuvius was described in great detail by Pliny the Younger, who at the time was a well educated Roman teenager visiting his uncle, Pliny the Elder, a government official ... read more

Have been wandering around Pompeii for the past hour. It's amazing archaelogically of course, but also from the perspective of humanity. Everything is so well preserved that it's quite easy to play my little game-all I have to do is duck off the beaten path into a house and I'm in someone's yard, someone's kitchen. I've been wandering in the rich part of town, where the houses large and airy, full of beautiful mosaics and fountains and deep wells against the dry season. A lot of the really amazing things have been taken to the museum, so everything's a bit more bare, but you can still imagine the lords of the city commissioning these artisans to spend hours beautifying their houses. It's also a bit sobering to compare the tiny cells of the poor to these ... read more

Last night we were at a rather loose end after getting back. After some hemming and hawing, we ventured out for food. One of the things on my list for Firenze was watching the sunset from the Ponte Vecchio. Check. Probably one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen. I think this was one of the Moments, surprisingly few and far between, when I realize, Wow, I'm in Italy. After seeing Florence spread out below my feet like a carpet, after pedalling through land that seems like the original source of sustenance, after pressing an olive branch in my book, after that last dizzying descent into the city, this was the ultimate Moment. After we lost the light, we wandered back, and then wedged ourselves into the pub across the street from the hotel. A ... read more

Travelling from Naples airport down to Amalfi must be one of top ten drives you can imagine. From the sweeping Bay of Naples to the sheer drop of the cliffs along the Amalfi coastline there is enough scenery of sheer beauty to take away anyones breath.First call was the historical Roman ruins at Pompeii with its magnificent roads and architecture, columns and remnants ,I spent the morning but could have easily stayed all day, best way to see Pompeii is on your own or in couples , a local guide will offer his services but are costly (and pushy)so amble round in your own time. Onto Sorrento for a couple of nights b/b at Hotel De La Ville with a great rooftop pool over looking the Bay of Naples and the threatening Mount Vesuvius and in the distance ... read more

Motorhome News from Europe 18. Italy. March 2005 Sicily & Southern Italy. Pompei, Herculaneum and Naples (Napoli) Our first day camped near Palermo was a rest day, catching up with the laundry and shopping. We were to stay there for the next four nights. The next day it rained heavily non-stop and we were able to get to know the neighbours. One couple from London had already been there for several days, camping in an old Ford panel-van with no insulation. The cold nights were the least of their problems. Breathing alone was causing condensation to run down the walls, soaking their matress and blankets. That’s the sort of story that makes us fully appreciate the luxury of our Autotrail motorhome! Then came the day to visit Palermo. Suffice to say that we spent about eight ... read more

No time to do a full entry because we are at what they call an "internet point" and there is only one computer. So far we have made it safe and sound to Napoli and have spent the afternoon browsing some of the little shops around town. Tomorrow we will spend the day at Pompeii. So instead of an entry, here are some more pictures! Ciao, Jackie and Sarah... read more
