so we woke up a pretty sore (no sleeping pad on a wood floor not so much the most comfortable) and started off. we hiked down into glenmalur valley, then we were hoping to get a lift in laragh, which is the closest town to glendalough. so we get off the wicklow way and start hiking up the road, sticking our thumbs out. eventually we score a ride with dominic, a guy who lives in glenmalur. it's a real good thing, because we would have been walking for a few hours to get into laragh. and he tells us some interesting things about ireland, we drove through some of the last remaining old-growth forest in ireland - the english cut almost all of it down in 1600 (that blows my mind) to make battleships. oh, and ... read more

Rachel: We are now waiting in the airport, ready to go but can't go through customs yet.... We did alot of shopping yesterday before we went to the banquet in the castle... got some video on that.... Rob: Alas we're at the airport. It's been a fun two weeks but I'm still not ready to come home. My wallet is but I'm not. So we've got another two hours or so to wait for the flight. After that we'll be stateside again in a few hours. Other than that I guess that we'll all see you in a bit.... read more

12/01-5/02 I flew back to Ohio for one week after my semester in Prague. I celebrated Christmas there before heading right back to Europe. For some reason, my mom bought be a roundtrip ticket from Prague, so I spent an evening there and flew to London the next day. I had a six month British work visa through the BUNAC program and spent the next five months living in London. I lived at the BUNAC hostel in the West End, right around the corner from the British Museum. My first job was as a waiter at a restaurant called Le Metro near Harrod's. That only lasted about a month before I realized that it was not for me. I was quickly able to find a new postion as a cashier at the Westminster Abbey bookshop. It ... read more

....in my tent....in a shelter....on the wicklow way. so after waking up (which is a bit deceptive, because that would imply that i slept, which didn't happen because of the drunk snoring man that stumbled to bed at 4:30 in the hostel) and asking how to work the shower, had breakfast and down to the bus station to get to glendalough (glen da loch in gaelic, valley of the two lakes). it's about an hour south of dublin, one of the oldest monastic centers in ireland, dates from 10th and 11th century. there were some chapels and a graveyard, very peaceful and "irish." there was even a guy playing a flute on the way in, stereotypical irish in a very good way. we had lunch by the upper lake, eating our soda bread and water. quite ... read more

Back in 2000 when I left school we had, like every other school in Oz, a Formal. That grand evening when you and your class mates dress to the nines and try to act like adults. My partner for that evening was Sarah. She was a close friend of mine at school and as it turned out we lost contact after that and I never saw her again. That is until I get a random email one day late last year from her. We began to chat and it turns out she is getting married to an Irish bloke and now living with him in Dublin, Ireland. It was quite a coincidence as I was living in England and so of course planned a quick trip over the to see her. Other things came up and ... read more

so...this is just a short one...it's amazing weather in dublin and i'm going out to see the sights. i picked up my cousin from the airport (figured out how to ride the bus to and from the airport like a big girl, and spent the day in dublin walking and napping, and napping some more...napped in trinity college, st. stephens green, and christchurch) and we searched for a hostel. big planner that i am, we didn't know where we were staying that night. fortunately it stays light until 10ish, so walking late at night is no big deal. found the best hostel in ireland (former U2 recording studio for 11 euro! which is potentially the highlight of my trip), dropped our bags and went to the temple bar area, where bono and edge own the clarence ... read more

Rachel: Well... we stopped off at Galaway for a quick breather and to see if we can find the internet. Our trip is winding down and only two more nites here in Ireland... Rob: Sigh...only two more days left as we round Galway and move on to the Burrens and the Cliffs of Moher. Had a great day in the Mountains going around the Twelve Pins...at least that's what I think the map called them, and Kylemore Abbey. Then drove out after dinner and had a great veiw of the ocean off the sky road in Clifden. I don't know about Rachel but I'm going to miss this country. Well that's all that I have for now. See ya all soon. ... read more

Well apparently I didn't explain enough!! I did not in fact go to Guiness Brewery. Correction, I went, but it had just closed. The guy I was walking with and I got lost, but I think I'll have enough time to see it before I go to the airport tomorrow. By "going out" and stuff, I meant that I was walking and some people invited me to go with them to whereever it is that they were going. And as for the British guy that I met on the Cornwall tour...here is why he's creepy. He told some other guy on our tour that he goes on these tours to sleep with women because they're easier...when the other guy asked him how he got so many girls, he said you slip them a rufie (I dunno ... read more
