Tuesday, January 6, 2015 - After catching up on some much needed sleep, we explored the city for a bit! We went shopping at Dunnes Stores which was described to us as the equivalent of Walmart or Target, but felt much more like I was shopping at Macy's and its Home Store with an attached grocery section. Everything here is reasonably priced and doesn't seem to expensive yet. We also went to a few other stores in the area to get various things. That night Caitlin, Emily, two other girls from our apartment complex, and I went to the Shop Street area for dinner. We ended up at the Quay's which is one of Galway's many many pubs. We all tried our first Guinness and some Irish food, including Irish stew. We also learned that eating ... read more

At this stage of my travels, given the amount of photos I post on Facebook in which I appear to bouncing from one European country to another, I am understandably getting some questions from people in my life. The main is, how exactly are you doing all this travel? Obviously, I'm not a millionaire. But I've learnt two simple, albeit highly important, things about how to live. The first: live more and have less. The second: if you want something bad enough, you'll make it happen. So, when I was home for three months in Australia after teaching in France over the European spring/summer, I realised I wanted to stay abroad. This wasn't going to happen magically and I knew I needed a way to support myself. Not only did I work three jobs back home to ... read more

Last night after my short 90 minute nap, I went to seek out some dinner. (And a 3-prong converter, which I obtained immediately - wahoo!) I knew I'd be having breakfast at the hotel restaurant, so I didn't want to have dinner there too. After wandering around, I stopped at a pub/restaurant on a corner and took a peek at the menu posted in the window. After I noticed at least one meat free option, I popped in right behind 2 guys that had also been checking out the menu. They picked a table by the door and I chose one closer to the bar - the only 2 empties in the whole place. I waited a while, trying to look inconspicuous. As I scanned the place I noticed those 2 guys were wearing nametags around ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Galway » Connemara October 31st 2014

Me voici arrivée à Galway. ... read more

Our driving adventures allowed us to see the beautiful Irish countryside. First was Dublin to Galway with a stopover at the peaceful Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens in Kildare. We spent a good hour wondering around before grabbing a hot drink and sweet snack at the restaurant - nice way to break up the drive. A couple more hours on the road until we found ourselves in the Galway city centre - parking was difficult, to say the least!! Anyway, only one night to check it all out so quick showers and then up the street to look around the main square. We were gifted a guide book for Ireland (or at least we think so...we took it anyway) from our host in Dublin. Georgia read it most if the drive over and found us ... read more

I ended up not getting much sleep last night because girls kept coming in the room all through out the night. Idon’t have a plug by my bunk bed so my phone ended up dying. I woke up at 5 in the morning freaking out thinking that I missed my alarm and would miss my tour. Thankfully, I grabbed my ipad and set the alarm on it for 6:15. Of course I really got up at 6:30 and left to find my tour. I ended up booking the Paddy Wagon tour to the Cliffs of Moher and the office was literally around the block from my hostel. The bus was pretty grand and had wifi. Today was another beautiful, sunny day. I guess I get to be in Ireland two out of the four days a ... read more

After a very eventful and busy first days, I finally have the opportunity to share them with you! First stop was breakfast at the Castle of Bunnratty. At this time, I became very thankful for the rain jacket I brought with me. After shopping at the gift shop (get excited, mom), we left for the Cliffs of Moher. Sadly, weather was not on our side Wednesday and about all we saw were mist and fog at a very high altitude. Any calories consumed on my flight were quickly burned off by the scenic hike along the trails. At one a point, a family of cows were frolicking next to us. I felt one with nature, really. The Burren was our next stop. Before our arrival, our professor described it as nothing less than a nature phenomenon ... read more

Gliding on the GoBus, through the streets leading out of Dublin, I relaxed and began to imagine what the weekend ahead would be like. I’ve been to Connemara a few times and spent a week on an Irish language course in Carraroe, but I have never stayed on an island for a weekend. I was delighted to be joining another couple at our friend’s cottage on Turbot Island. This took place in August 2013 but I’m only writing about it now. The GoBus was great and got me from Dublin to Galway for only €10, with free WiFi onboard and sockets beside some seats. I had booked the Eyre Square Town House online and found it easily, only 5 minutes walk from the bus station. It was lovely and super-quiet with every comfort provided from a ... read more
