Since I blew a fuse the evening before, I began the day by fessing up (by What's App) to the host who replied that it was not unusual for North American electrical items to cause that problem and she would 'pop up and check' during the day. Had a reservation for 9:30 for the Book of Kells in Trinity College. Got up early, took a taxi in to Trinity. Certainly looked different from our last visit--not the College but the streets around the College. In 2017, there was a massive Roads Project and it was a mess. Some of the entrances to Trinity were closed by it even. This time, we easily walked across the street and in, had a great visit with the Book of Kells and went up to the Long Room. A LOT ... read more

Got up, had one last breakfast at the B&B, settled our bill (they had laundry service and we now have clean clothes!!), and took a taxi down the hill to the train station. A smaller station than Dublin and not near as much walking they did have a Starbucks so Mike got a cup while we waited. Another nice train ride across the country and we were in Dublin. Rainy but we found a taxi to the Airbnb we had reserved. It is in a suburb called Rathmines and we spent the rest of the day settling in, wandering, and having dinner. working with my very old little travel laptop that evening, I blew a fuse which the host fixed the next day but I fear I may have fried the laptop’s battery or ability to ... read more

After breakfast, we took a cab from City North Hotel into the center of Dublin. Happily, there was another person in our group who needed to go into the city so we were able to share the fare. We checked our luggage at the Point A Hotel, near Parnell Square, then wandered down O'Connell St. We had purchased gifts for Mike's oncology team and wanted to put it in the mail. How convenient--post office right there and Eason's, a department store, with packaging supplies, just a few doors down. That mission accomplished, we headed on over the O'Connell Bridge and stopped at Fitzgerald's for a bit of lunch. We then hopped into a cab to go to Kilmainham Gaol, my goal for the day. Although it was a real jail and thousands of men, women, and ... read more

Arrived yesterday after an uneventful flight . I was however reminded of the goodness of people in the Toronto airport . While changing into my comfortable long distance flight clothes I had taken my tablet out to set it on flight mode . I was quite perplexed when I was paged to come to the desk in the departure area . I was first asked for some ID then I was presented with my tablet . I had forgotten it in the washroom and someone had turned it in . Wow ! It affirms my belief that people are good. Arriving in Dublin at 8:30 was good although it was raining. Fortunately it didn't last too long . I found my bus and my BnB with little difficult . I was able to drop my luggage ... read more

Ireland the North. Dundalk to Dublin No rain today and a magnificent tail wind. I wouldn’t call it magnificent if it was in our face would I? The Glen Gat in Dundalk was a really good stay and can be recommended. The rooms were good, as was breakfast and the place was stacked with old classy artefacts plus the staff were very helpful. They even demanded a group photo for their Facebook page. The first point on our journey today was Blackrock which is very much like Morecambe Bay with a flat beach with a fast tide and previously a big cockle picking area as shown by the ???? on the promenade. This took us onto the R132 which has a series of long boring straight roads until we reached Castlebellingham where we turned to the ... read more

TUE, 09 AUG 2022 – It was late afternoon/early evening when we made our return to Dublin on the last day of the 10-Day Ultimate Ireland Small Group Tour by Overland Ireland - Small Group Tours. I was the first tour member to be dropped off at his/her/their hotel. Check-in went smoothly and after a short freshen up, I headed for Oscars Café Bar, a few feet from the hotel, for supper. Linguini and chicken in white sauce (not very Irish) with an Island’s Edge Irish Stout (very Irish) hit the spot. In that Island’s Edge Irish Stout regard, I had spotted Guinness Storehouse and Jameson Distillery on Google Maps (both within walking distance), but my investigation revealed a minimum tour fee of 25 Euros (up to as much as 100 Euros). I have always had ... read more

Our final photo stop before returning to Dublin and her sweet Molly Malone is The Rock of Cashel. As our guides take you back to The Capital, they’ll give you tips and recommendations if you plan to stay on in Dublin. Goodbyes will have to be said but it’s slán go fóill, (see you ... read more

Ireland the North 2 Here we go on an adventure in Ireland cycling around the northern half of the enchanted island of Ireland. This tour starts off in Dublin, where we arrived by ferry this afternoon in heavy rain, but what did we expect in the Emerald Isle? After locking the bikes securely in the Q car park we checked in at the Gresham Hotel, which is a really nice hotel on O’Connell St Upper. We were checked in by two nice young girls from Argentina and Ukraine, which was a lot slicker than last time we came when it was nothing less than mayhem taking about an hour to process. Bill, my chief negotiator, managed to book us in the restaurant for a meal which is usually chocker block on a Saturday night. Great food ... read more

I noted earlier that the folks from my tour of Ireland (Overland Ireland) suggested I move my tour one tour later in the year to avoid the havoc (crowded restaurants, etc.) brought about by The Galway Races Summer Festival. I agreed, but my return to London from the Wales tour “late in the day” on Friday and a 0830 departure on Sunday for the Ireland tour gave me only Saturday to move my base of operations. Fortunately, I will have two days to explore Dublin after the conclusion of the tour of Ireland. That early Sunday appointment got me up and going on Saturday to have breakfast, stock my small suitcase with clean laundry (from the big suitcase that had been in storge), stow the big suitcase AGAIN and get to London Heathrow to catch the ... read more

July 16 Today is the day that we meet the people with whom we will be spending the next two weeks. We will travel by bus around Ireland and Scotland and will part ways once we end this tour in Edinburgh. Breakfast was at 8 am. It was a buffet breakfast complete with components of an English breakfast along with many extras such as pancakes, fried potatoes, mushrooms, and a variety of breads. Once finished, we had time to return to our rooms before boarding the bus for a trip around Dublin. I always laugh at the word Dublin…..it’s because of the many jokes Terry Wilson tells. I won’t share it here in print, but you can ask him and I’m sure he will tell you. Top of the list today……find a shirt that says Dublin ... read more
