California Dreaming From the moment I landed, I could recognize the echoes of the Bay Area in Dublin. It's younger inhabitants are hipper and more distinct from the old UK guard than I had expected. Perhaps it is because I walked out of my hostel and straight into the throbbing heart of the youth culture, on nearby Camden Street. In a glut of organic eateries, juiceaterias, cafelounges and multipurpose pubspaces, I found the two-headed monster that is Whelans and The Village. A pair of shiny nouveau loft buildings so out of place amongst the weathered brick that I half expected them to be plyboard fronts, hollow in back. Instead, the rear end of the block offered additional entrances to musical venues atop the well-kitted throngs of the portobello and prosciutto set. I just made that ... read more

Change of plans...and continents. As Paolo Coelho writes in The Alchemist, when you are following your dreams and pursuing your own personal legend, the whole universe conspires to help you achieve it. As such, it is hard not to recognize that certain opportunities which fall right into your lap are most likely signs of which road to take next on your journey of life. It was only a few short weeks ago that I was settling into a life reminiscent of my early high school days - with no car and no real job, I spent my days helping around the house, leaving the refuge of my parents’ home by bicycle to research my newest ideas of travel ventures at the town library or walking over to my sister’s to visit with the niece and nephews. ... read more

Starting with Saturday, Charles and I wandered the city. We went to the National Gallery which had some very nice pieces, including a great Carrivaggo (sp) and a Vermeer. After that, we went to the Museum of Natural Science. It was creepy as hell...it was four floors of taxidermied animals. We then had lunch in a nearby park and wandered to another park. We watched some dancers there before heading over to St. Patrick's Cathedral, Christ Church Cathedral and Dublin Castle. From there we went to a church that is said to have perserved human remains that supposedly inspired Bram Stoker, but it was closed. We went by the Jameson distillery, but didn't go on the tour. After a quick nap, we went to The Celt with the crew from The Rainbow (our hostel). We had ... read more

We have arrived in Dublin at long last. But, the journey was fun and that's all that matters. We stopped for a while in Swansea, Wales. The pound buys so much more there, we felt rich! Charles and I wandered the docks there for a while and then got a bite in a pub. To get to the women's restroom, you had to go up several flights of stairs, down winding hallways and around and around and around. I hope no one had to go too badly. After waiting in the cold train station for a while, we decided to hit another pub. It was filled with misfits and scoundrels of all sorts. We loved it. The second we opened the door the place went silent and all eyes were on us. We eventually caught the ... read more

Well, Sal and Mick arrived in Dublin from Blackpool on Tuesday the 3rd of May, 2005. It was absolutely teeming with rain and so after a brief meeting of the executive travel committee, a decision was made to jump on the first bus out of Dublin to more favourable weather. As luck would have it, the first bus was going to sunny Limerick. Unfortunately, and unbenownst to us, Limerick is not really the best location for backpackers. Some time ago, the two or three backpacker hostels in the town were shut down and converted into emergency accomodation for assylum seekers (unlike Australia, there was no barbed wire etc. to keep these people in). So, after walking around Limerick City for about 3 hours with our backpacks on, we finally located what apparently was the only hotel ... read more

After the horror that was the ferry ride we were delighted to finally arrive in Ireland. Our first city was Cork. Cork is the European Capital of Culture for 2005 and the city reflected it. It was a very beautiful city but it lacked the edge that the other cities in Ireland had. On our first day we went to Blarney to visit the castle. We climbed the tower to the top of the castle and prepared ourselves to dangle upside down hundreds (well it felt like hundreds) of feet above the gardens to kiss the legendary Blarney Stone. Legend has it that those who kiss the Blarney Stone are forever blessed with the gift of gab. Since Andrea didn't get a good picture the first time Liz had to kiss the stone twice so she's ... read more

So I was able to hitch a ride from Doolin to Galway and I gave Armindo €10 because gas is around $4 gallon. Neither of us knew the area but it seemed to be near the city center so he pulled over and dropped me off on some corner. It was cool that he drove me because I got to see some of the Burren which I wouldnt have been able to see without doing a tour or renting a car or something. Plus it gave me someone to chill with, i'll be honest and say im just happy to be alive because the roads are extremely narrow. Theyre not even roads really, more like paved paths so everyone drives in the middle since theyre so narrow, but theyre also driving 100km/h and around blind bends. ... read more

Today was another full day. We were up early so we had breakfust and then came back to our room and went to sleep. Got moving around 10am and were headed towards Powerscourt. We walked to the bus stop we needed and on the way there passed through St. Stephen's Green. It was a really nice park. Lots of green grass and colorful flowers. The bus ride to Powerscourt was fun - we sat on the top. It was nice to leave the city and see some of the landscape. When we got there we had to walk up this incredibly steep hill. I think my legs will hurt tomorrow. At the top we found the entrance and had to walk a long bit until we hit the gardens. It was tiring, but really scenic and ... read more

Today has been a long, but exciting day. We landed in Dublin a little before 8am. We got off and i got my first stamp in my passport. We made reservations at the Camden Deluxe Hotel and took a bus into the town. We sat on the top deck of the double decker bus -- that was so cool! We dropped our backpacks off at the hotel and went walking. We saw St. Patrick's Cathedral and walked through the park. The old buildings are cool to look at. We walked around looking for food, but since it was Sunday, not much was open. We walked to the Guiness Brewery. That place was huge -- it was seven floors. It was a self-guided tour, so we walked around and got educated on beer :) THey had a ... read more

Joan, Kelly, & I went to Dublin for 2.5 days... we all kinda overslept Thursday due to staying out too late Wednesday night (visited Barrie in London), so rushed to the airport, and after we got to Dublin and checked into our B&B we took a nap. We headed into town and wandered around O'Connell Street, along the River Liffey, and grabbed dinner. Friday we took a bus tour of town and stopped at all the big sights: Trinity College (where the Book of Kells is), St Patrick's Cathedral, Guinness Brewery, and St Stephen's Green. Trinity College has an amazingly beautiful campus, and seeing the Book of Kells was cool, but the way they had it set up was odd. You walk thru a big room with tons of display boards where there are blow ups ... read more
