Monday 3rd August We flew back from Egilsstadir yesterday morning and in the afternoon I spent a while in the main tourist information centre. The group tour I was on finished yesterday, and all the other members of the group had now left for home, but I had tagged a few days onto my holiday in order to do some sight-seeing around the Reykjavik area. There a half a dozen main tourist companies which each offer various day trips from Reykjavik, with at least 50 different trips available between them, covering pure sight-seeing but also any number of activities such as horse riding, glacier walking, cycling, diving etc. My aim was to spend my last three days seeing as much as I could. In the tourist office I booked ready-made tours for today and tomorrow, and ... read more

So my first blog post in almost 2 years! Haven't really been on a big trip since the 2013 bike trip to Sri Lanka, due to work and life in general getting in the way :) This year we weren't able to get the time needed off for a bike adventure, so instead, my friend Maxine and I decided to knock a few countries off our bucket list. With the new direct IcelandAir flight to Reykjavik, it was a great opportunity and excuse to explore Iceland! We left a scorching hot Edmonton on Saturday evening, we had paid for the "comfort" class - which was not a lot extra - I have to say totally worth it. The only difference between their first class and comfort class, was the fact they give you champagne in first ... read more

I arrived in Reykjavik last night. I have arrived a day early for a group excursion which starts tomorrow, but I wanted to have a day to have a look around the capital. It also meant that I could fly direct from Birmingham which was much more convenient for me rather than have to travel all the way down to Heathrow. I'm staying at the Kex hostel in the centre of the city and right on the waterfront. The hostel is a lively place with a large bar area which appears to be used by locals as a pub as well as by the hostel's own residents. There are also often live bands playing in the bar area. The bar also serves meals and I ate there twice during my time in Iceland. There is very ... read more

». Un peu short and sweet.

Fri May 15 Day 1 Reykjavik Adventure and Meeting the Team I’ll be honest, this whole experience has been overwhelming but once I’m outside spending time with the dogs, all doubt wash away in a sea of blissful happiness.I landed in an airport 45 minutes outside of Reykjavik and took a bus to the main station near the big city. While sitting in the bus station, prepared to wait 5 hours for my ride to come pick me up, I FaceTimed my sister, Kate and she suggested I use that time to explore downtown Reykjavik and maybe get some lunch. I was hesitant at first, or maybe I was just content to sit at the bus station with free wifi but instead, I made the journey into the damp, grey Iceland air. With a map in ... read more

Sun May 17 Day 3 Veterinary Studies Abroad Woke up around the same time, 8:30am. Picked up poop, moved some dogs around. We’re leaving to go to the farm today but that’s not until after the 2pm tour. I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for breakfast. The first tour there was a big dogfight. Ceasar got some scratched on his inner thigh but he’s a tough one so he’ll be fine. Manituk and Oidis got puncture wounds on their paw and inner leg respectively. They were babies about the hole thing (get it?). Sorry that wasn’t really funny. Anyways, I learned how to deal with doggy puncture wounds and got to see a lot of blood. After that we drove to the farm and the view is spectacular. We can see the famous volcano ... read more

Mon May 18 Day 4 Go See Mad Max It’s only day 4? No way. Lets see…. Woke up and did the usual poop and hose down the cage drill. I’m getting a lot better at learning the dog’s names. We have this tiny little box that has two beds in it and nothing else. When we stay on the glacier, two people are going to have to sleep in it because it’ll be close to the dogs and if there is a fight or a dog gets loose, there will be people close by. The base camp is a lot further from the dogs so that’s why it’s necessary. I haven’t seen the place but this is what I’ve been told. Tomorrow we leave at 5am to go back to Skalafell. That’s the place that ... read more

We were leaving New York and our 4 night stopover in Iceland was upon us. We flew Icelandair and were lucky enough to score exit row seats so we had plenty of room. I don't even remember the 5 hour flight from JFK to Keflavik in Iceland as I pretty much passed out lol. We lost about 4 hours during the flight so it was 6am when we flew in to Keflavik. We couldn't check in to our guesthouse until 2pm, so we just caught a Flybus from Keflavik to Reykjavik and then hung at the bus terminal. We were too tired to do much else. We bought an extremely expensive brekky at the terminal cafe and then took turns sleeping on the chairs like bogans until it was time to go. We walked to our ... read more
