Land of Fire and Icicles And here we go again…..off to the airport and off on a new adventure. Even the beginning is new for a change - instead of either driving myself to McCarran or reserving the usual car service, FINALLY was able to use a shuttle bus, Supershuttle. The little blue bus company has been in the Las Vegas valley for about two years but thanks to our strong taxi lobby group, has been restricted to servicing only the hotels in and around the Strip. Don’t know how they managed it, but now they can pick up and drop off passengers in the surrounding residential areas. What a blessing this is especially for yours truly. As many times as I make the airport run, it means a savings in the hundreds of dollars in ... read more

Six friends (Chuck and Leila, Chris and Sarah, Jason and Holly) from Wisconsin decided to travel to Iceland together in November. One friend (Chris) asked the seemingly obvious question "Why would we want to go to Iceland in November?". Well, why not?! In all reality though, Iceland has a very mild climate despite edging the Arctic Circle. Typically speaking the weather is milder in Iceland than in the Northern United States, say November through February. However, Iceland is nestled oh so nicely between the Arctic Circle as well as the Gulf Stream. The result can be not so nice of weather, like when our group of six friends traveled there November of 2015. Windy, wet, and cold for much of our time there. It's all part of the Icelandic adventure, so we put on our winter ... read more

Better late than never, eh? Day 4. Our last full day in Iceland. It is clear, sunny and mild. A beautiful day and in stark contrast to the day before! We head out at 8am for a full day of touring. Today we are going to see more volcanoes and waterfalls and stop at the southernmost village in Iceland. First stop is Seljalandsfoss which is one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland. You can actually walk behind it to take pictures. Unfortunately, we were unable to do that because it was still freezing and the path was iced over. It was still a beautiful site. Next up was another amazingly beautiful waterfall. Skogafoss drops 200 feet and the spray creates beautiful rainbows. There are stairs to take you to the top of the waterfall but ... read more

Hey folks - if you're checking in my travel blog it sure would be nice if you left a comment. Otherwise I can't tell who has stopped by. Come on, give me some blog love :) Sorry but holy hell what a day! Fabulous stops, sub freezing air, sideways blowing snow. Becky and I were saying we have gotten our money's worth on this trip! Northern lights, winter weather, milder but chilly evenings. The only things we've really missed are earthquakes and volcano eruptions - but hey - we still have a day and a half left!! So - Day 3. The Golden Circle. Today was about the best known natural, cultural and historic sites. We headed out to the west today. As we were boarding the bus it began to snow. And snow. Once we ... read more

Today was the first day of winter in Iceland. It felt like it. Even managed to see a few snowflakes at one point. But I'm all warmed up after a nice long shower and ready to tell you about today. Actually, I'm going to let the pictures do most of the talking today. We had a half day tour and half a day to do whatever we wanted. Tour was to the Blue Lagoon. After passing through miles and miles of lava fields and past mountains of lava, we arrived at our destination. Oh. My. Gosh. What an experience. It was surreal. The colors, the steam, the water, the clay mask. It was also interesting in that you have to put away your modesty because they have very strong rules about hygiene - bathing before you ... read more

Today was THE day. One of the longest days of my life. I am so exhausted and need to go to bed but I am just too excited to blog the day's happenings. Actually, I'm going back a day - I checked out of my scary motel in Danvers at noon and called for a cab to get out of there. Of course it was noon so I had to wait a bit. So Eli picks me up. Eli is an early 60s hippie type. Again, some fascinating conversation ensued,. Ya'll the dude was hitting on me. No joke. He told me I was beautiful, had a sweet sprint and actually groaned when I told him that yes, I was married. WTF??? Anyway. I was still exhausted from my Salem trekking the day before and all ... read more

On our last day in Iceland, Jamie took us to The Blue Lagoon. My dad was hesitant about showering in a room full of men or wearing a swimsuit but we successfully talked him into it! And it was fantastic! The drive itself was glorious. The lagoon is on a turnoff road on the way to the airport, so it was perfect timing for our afternoon flight. Along the way, you can see small discharge channels where the lava rock field is covered with silica and blue waters. A little history: this is not a naturally occurring lagoon. There is a geothermal plant nearby, which pulls the water from deep underground and which is superheated by a nearby lava flow. The hot water is used for municipal water use (note my first day, where hot water ... read more

My dad and I were able to find our way to the Boston Logan Airport via the very crowded metro. There was almost no line and check-in at WOW was super easy. We got our seats and made our way through security. The gate was at a tiny terminal extension, very new. Boarding was easy and our seats were very roomy and spacious - I spent extra money for dad to get an XXL seat in the exit row and mine was a cheaper seat behind him and next to the window. There was no one in front of me, so he and I had lots of room and were able to chat pretty easily. The best part of the whole plane ride, besides the super friendly flight attendants, despite the perfect seats, despite the gross ... read more

I’ve really been getting into the solo-travel hostel life. It's nice to just park your backside in the hostel cafe and chat to whoever about their travels, it often ends up with the whole cafe involved. It didn’t take long for me to realise that Iceland is just too expensive for my budget and anything other than eating, sleeping and walking is pretty much out the window. I spent all day Monday walking along the waterfront and back through the city. The mountains on the other side of the bay are stunning and quite a few Icelanders have said to me that once the mountains turn white, summer is over. Well, in the time I’ve been here they've certainly become white. I stopped off for lunch at a cheap but tasty Vietnamese place and found a ... read more

Things didn't start well, I'd had a bad night's sleep but Lou was coming down with something and feeling really bad. Everything felt a bit surreal (especially saying goodbye to Lou), sort of like it wasn't really happening. Soon I was waiting for a bus to take me to Rugby where I could jump on a train to Birmingham International. Whilst waiting for the bus an old boy with a dog on a string and a can of special brew (it was 9am) came over for a chat which turned out to be quite fun. He told me about his travels in the Middle East and just how important it is that I get some good boots. For some reason talking to the most stereotypical drunk hobo you could imagine made it hit home. This is ... read more
