Postcards around the world

Zoe Liz Reid

I'm an Aussie girl from a small town with a big dream to travel the world.

In the year 2015 I am finally embarking on my dream adventure to backpack around the world. I am 25 years old and after travelling to South Africa in 2011, I fell in love with travel. I'm a girl who loves to meet new people, I am SO excited for the conversations I will have with all sorts of wonderful people. I want to see as much of the world as I can; I have no plan, I'm just drifting along and taking in the sights as I go. I'm happy as long as I have a book in my hand and a view to enjoy!

Europe » Iceland » Southwest » Reykjav√≠k May 14th 2015

We were leaving New York and our 4 night stopover in Iceland was upon us. We flew Icelandair and were lucky enough to score exit row seats so we had plenty of room. I don't even remember the 5 hour flight from JFK to Keflavik in Iceland as I pretty much passed out lol. We lost about 4 hours during the flight so it was 6am when we flew in to Keflavik. We couldn't check in to our guesthouse until 2pm, so we just caught a Flybus from Keflavik to Reykjavik and then hung at the bus terminal. We were too tired to do much else. We bought an extremely expensive brekky at the terminal cafe and then took turns sleeping on the chairs like bogans until it was time to go. We walked to our ... read more

So we did something ridiculous and drove to JFK airport lol. Driving in Vegas, Denver, across the country, no problem. Driving in New York? Never again thank you! We were soooo not prepared lol. Ridiculous tolls exceeding $30 a pop and you must pay in cash which we didn't have on us at the time, so having to fill out paperwork declaring that we will pay online within 10 days meanwhile getting flipped off by the aggressive woman behind us. Lollllz. Then the lanes on the bridges were crazy narrow and the trucks practically didn't fit, and nobody seems to use the lanes here anyway. Or indicators. But they do love the horn. We did somehow manage to get to the airport to drop off the hire car, thank youuuu so much take it away! On ... read more

We were sad to leave Canada but excited to fly into Vegas! Our flight was pretty intense leaving Calgary as a snow storm blew in and the plane had to be de-iced before take off. And then as we were flying into Vegas we had to land in a sand storm. That was probably the bumpiest flight I've ever been on. We arrived late at night and caught a cab to our accommodation at Polo Towers on the strip, then collapsed! We spent five days in Vegas which was mostly a rush of Arbonne, but we also got to see the famous Vegas sign and check out a few of the hotels along the strip. It's crazy that everyone can smoke indoors in Vegas. We went shopping and got some awesome bargains for clothes. We had ... read more

For our last full day in Canada, we decided to hire a car that we could drive to Calgary the next day for our flight. I was so keen for a car so we could drive the Icefields Parkway, one of the most scenic routes in the world. We were up early to pick up the car. Our two dorm mates (one Aussie and one French) both had planned to see Lake Louise the same day we wanted to drive the Parkway, so we suggested they come with us and it ended up being an awesome road trip. Driving the car initially was one of the most trippy things I've ever done lol. Everthing in the car was opposite, and then I had to drive on the wrong side of the road. We were super lucky ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff April 12th 2015

Wow, what a place to stay for 10 days! Banff, all I can say to describe this little gem of a town is WOW. We arrived here at 830am after an overnight bus trip from Vancouver, and to our delight everything was white, covered in fresh fluffy snow! It had snowed all the night before and we were stoked! The second thing I noticed was that we were literally surrounded by towering snow-capped mountains. Holy crap what a sight! The third thing I noticed was that suddenly we were FREEZING. Haha. It was Easter Sunday when we arrived, and we meandered through the snowy streets, marvelling at how truly pretty this place is. Absolutely incredible. I've never seen or been anywhere like this place. We got some brekky and then heard church bells. Best timing. We ... read more

Ten awesome days in Vancouver! As we are coming up to the three week mark of long-term travel, we're finding our groove. We have been spoiled in Vancouver. We're staying right in downtown in a hotel we got for a bargain. Our first day we treated ourselves to a much needed sleep in. 29 hours or so on a bus seriously does things to one's sanity status. I think next time we will just fly lol. We walked around and discovered to our delight that we are literally surrounded by food. YES. After a little exploring we settled on a scrumptious Belgian brekky. And this is how the last week or so has gone. Wake up, get ready, EAT something delicious, explore, eat again, settle in for the night in our hotel room. We've spent lots ... read more

It has been an awesome few days here in San Francisco! I am in love with this city! We arrived around 8pm Friday night after 8 hours on the bus. Instantly in love. Such a cruisy vibe to this city. We caught a cab to our hostel. First hostel experience haha, so far so good. We are staying in a convenient area between Fishermans Wharf and Union Square. Saturday we rose early and beelined it to Fishermans Wharf. So cool!! We hunted around for a good deal until we found a hop on hop off 72hr package including Alcatraz. Then jumped on the bus to the Golden Gate Bridge so we could get off and walk it. We were blessed with a beautiful crystal clear day to see all of SF and the bay. By afternoon ... read more

So here we are! We made it to LA extremely jet lagged but full of excitement. We arrived at 630am and caught a Flyaway shuttle bus straight to Hollywood. We walked from Hollywood to our accommodation in West Hollywood which was an adventure in itself with our backpacks on, getting hassled by guys selling tours. Ohhhhhmygoodness I am too tired for this haha. Eventually after a pit stop at Maccas we got to our lodging. We've spent the last few days exploring the city, and we figured the best way to do this was to buy a Starline Hop on hop off 48 hr ticket. We could jump on and off these buses as much as we pleased and it was awesome. On Tuesday we took the bus all through Hollywood and Beverly Hills, then we ... read more

In three weeks time I get on a plane in Brisbane and I fly directly to Los Angeles in USA! I've been waiting for this moment for over six months and it's finally almost here. To pass the time until take-off I have been doing lots of research and trying to get vaccinations, bank accounts, phone plans etc all organised. This is my first big trip so it seems I have a lot to get my head around! I also am planning to take ONLY carry on if I can manage it, so fine tuning the gear I'm planning to take has been interesting. There won't be many clothes, that's for sure. I have booked RTW tickets but so far that is all. I am keen on only a loose itinerary to give myself the freedom ... read more
