After a lie in this am we wandered down to our buffet breakie which was only continental but still pretty good. Muesli, croissants and danishes followed by attempting to use the coffee machine! Mum and dad – its the small version of your one and luckily we didn’t get that one for jen and rich cos it only does the coffee part from what we gathered and we then had to pour cold milk in it which kinda ruined the temperature levels of the experience!! But filled up and caffeined up we trip advisered for a while to figure out what we actually wanted to do for the few days we were here. We decided to head across to Buda for the day to explore the old town. We dressed in semi summer clothes excited about ... read more

Hello All!! Sorry I didn't get this up earlier, I forgot my memory card in my computer in Barcelona while I was venturing off to Budapest! Budapest is the capital of Hungary and is split in two (Buda/Pest) by the Danube River. Along the river there are many Bridge, the most famous is the Chain Bridge lit up at night. All the bridges were destroyed by the Nazi's when they left Hungary. Since Hugary was taken over by many different countries in different decades (Romans, Turks, Austrians) there are many kinds of architechture and style of buildings. When we first arrived it looked a lot like I imagine riverfront Poughkeepsie was about 10 years ago. The billboards and signs are kind of old school and there aren't many modern cars cruising around. The lack of cars ... read more

Less than 24 hours to go!!!! :-D Wow, I cannot believe that it is finally here!!! :-D Every time I though of it, it was something far away, something of the future and now it is only a few hours away! So, first things first, for those who have no idea what I am talking about: after years of dreaming, months of planning, weeks of preparations and days of being hyperactive because of the mixture of excitement and being scared, I am finally leaving for New Zealand!!! Since my very short lived but memorable au pairing experience, I have been putting aside all of my earnings in the hope that one day I will get on the plane and fly for days to land more down than Down Under and enjoy the most magnificent nature I ... read more

When you last left this exciting (and seemingly never ending) adventure, Rachelle was in the enviable position of sharing a night train cabin with 5 men. Would she survive? Would she come out with a ring on her finger? In the end, she did better than Leah and I as they all disappeared in the middle of the night for various destinations, leaving her to a peaceful night’s rest while our cabin was not quite as quiet. It turned out the Asian guy was a snorer. Leah was not impressed, and in her drunk state, her tact was at a even lower level than usual and she had no hesitation in screaming out at him to shut up. He was scared enough to comply and I can see why.... Soon into our trip, we found out ... read more

Well it has been a while since I last offered an opinion on what we have been doing or seen. Time is absolutely flying and I might add at this time, the keyboards I come across can be quite different to use let alone touch type on. My big sis has been very kind and hospitable the entire time we were there in Hassloch. Have you looked up where it is yet????? HINT:- It is in the wine district of lower Germany, near the little sticky out bit of north france, near Strasbourg. We have shopped locally, eaten all manner of pork product from roast pork as we Aussies know it, through to some weird and wonderful smoked deli styles of about 20 plus selections! Then there is the mince varieties, thru to the Gyros(Souvulaki) schwine ... read more

August 21-Our goal this morning was to make it to the Hungarian Parliament Tour in English at 10am. We should have read our Ricky (Rick Steeves) better, because by the time we got ourselves into the city, the line for tickets was huge and they sold out before we got one. After this change in plans, we floundered for a bit before catching our course again. We left the Parliament and then tried to hurry to catch the subway to get to a bus tour of Momento Park which is a park just outside town of all of the old communist statues. "We just missed it" (That's for you, amy)... so then we had to re-plan again. We decided to try to find out if the Great Market in Budapest was open on Sunday, even though ... read more

August 20th- Today is a Hungarian National Holiday, St. Stephen's day. Our wakeup call was about 7am and we were down to breakfast shortly after 8. The spread today was not as nice as our last hotel, but suitable. Mom had her oatmeal (brought from home) and I enjoyed the toast. We stopped at the front desk on the way to the train to ask about the holiday festivities. The nice man at the front desk pointed us to the Castle District on the Buda Side.  We headed for the metro and went straight there. When we got out of our destination station on the metro, we surfaced to view's of the Hungarian Parliament building right on the Danube. It was breathtaking. We strolled down the promenade toward the Castle district and watched as the vendors ... read more

hello all, its very early here and im taking the opportunity to write in anticipation of todays journey. yesterday was a highly enjoyable quest to find the famous buda castle labrinth, which we did after a few hours wondering around buda castle´s almost disney-esque ramparts. mood wa slighty spoiled by the internet cafe but was very good fun exploring the cave of courage in the pitch black. very sad to leave, the people are friendly, the food tasty and the drinks cheap. 8-9 hours total to zagreb then swiftly passing through zadar. forcast for all of croatia is heavy rain, so sunbathing is definitely off the table. With a bit of luck should find an internet cafe on the island - fingers crossed with an sd card slot. see you at a more reasonable hour james, ... read more

hello all, now comfortably settled in central budapest. passed through vienna yesterday which despite a shaky start, quickly overwhelmed with grandiose buildings dominating every street. Prices were worst so far though, the local speciality - wiener schznitzl was a must have but we decided not to go for the viennesse coffee or hot chocolate which was the price of the entire prague feast. Budapest is a different story. local currency is forints -although thats only our best guess. and at 3ÖÖ to the pound, with a coffee costing 1ÖÖ that means cheap cheap cheap. lunch was schznitzel, potatoes, onions, courgettes and mushrooms - phill without the meat, mick without the vegetables. Russell got an huge duck shank - all from the local speciality butcher/cafe for only about 3 pounds each. We've just returned from a clifftop ... read more

We slept in a bit and took it easy in the morning. We have three full days in Budapest and we’re all looking forward to exploring this city at a more relaxed pace, so we enjoyed lounging about the spacious suite for a while before venturing out. Bright sunlight helped us see the city in a “new light” as we headed out, quite hungry and in search of breakfast. After some discussion we stopped at a café just a few hundred feet from our hotel. It was clearly overpriced but we were too hungry to push on in search of better value. For our Hungarian forints, we got some excellent coffee and pastries and a table in beautifully appointed room with a high and elaborately detailed gilt ceiling and fine wooden paneling. After our breakfast we ... read more
