I arrived a little later into Budapest so I grabbed a quick bite from food at a market then got ready to go out. The hostel took us to Karaoke which ended up being a whole bar sing-a-long... read more

Day 2 in Budapest So, after a very eventful day yesterday, Brett and I fell asleep very quickly, only to wake up a few hours later and start the second part of our journey!! Today Jutka showed us around Budapest, which was really great. It was so much easier having someone that spoke Hungarian, as well as someone who knew the metro/public transportation system. Jutka, for those of you who dont know, is Babus' daughter. Babus is related to Mom-Mom Edly... How? Im not exactly sure! Mom-Mom explained it to me once, but it was very complicated that I think a second round of explanation is necessary! So we woke up again around 7am, which makes me want to cry, and left Krisztinas house around 9am. Jutka drove into the metro station, and we took the ... read more

Beautiful beautiful Budapest...Gosh this city is amazing. At night it looks like a fairytale land and takes my breath away with it's majestic buildings bathed in golden lights. Do I sound sentimental? Of course! This is Hungary...the other half of my heritage...that now all fits in to place in my head and in my heart. Ibi and I have been in Budapest since Saturday night and we have spent 2 days walking. And walking. All around the city - well both cities - Buda and Pest. We have admired all of the buildings, a few times over, as I keep dragging Ibs back to see them again and again! Her little legs have been holding up well as I have traipsed her all over both sides of the Danube in search of the monuments, gardens, buildings, ... read more

I love this city! Every time I go there I always think I wish I could live in Budapest just for a few months at least. I've been to Budapest at least seven times, and I could go there again and again. We went there in mid-March, just for a weekend, and when we came back we thought it would be nice to go there again with some of our friends, so we went there again last weekend. In March, while it was still a bit cold, after a day of sightseeing and walking through Szentendre, a charming village near Budapest, we decided to try for the first time one of the famous thermal baths or spas. We went to Gellert, one of the oldest (hot springs were discovered in 15th century!) and quite beautiful spas ... read more

BUDAPEST Day 75 Bus… train… rain rain rain BUDAPEST Day 76 Had the strangest night last night! I arrived to my hostel and seemed to be the only girl in the whole place, which doesn’t really bother me. I was in a room with 4 guys, there was a room attached to ours with another 5 guys in it and a room down the hall with maybe another 5 guys in it. So I was chatting with the Mexican and German guys in my room. They were heading out for drinks but I had spent that lovely night on the bus so I decided to stay in and get to bed early. The boys left and I went to bed. At about 2 in the morning I hear some one near my bed so I ... read more

Straddling the romantic Danube River, with the Buda Hills to the west and the start of the Great Plain to the east, Budapest is the most beautiful city in central Europe. And the human legacy is just as remarkable as Mother Nature’s. Architecturally, Budapest is a gem, with enough baroque, neoclassical, Eclectic and art nouveau (or Secessionist) buildings to satisfy anyone’s appetite. With parks brimming with attractions, museums filled with treasures, pleasure boats sailing up and down the scenic Danube and Turkish-era thermal baths belching steam, the Hungarian capital is a delight both by day and by night. The food and wine are excellent, cheap and in abundance and the night-life is hot. The chain of one of the famous fast foods has sprung covering almost every single underground stations in the city. Budapest does have ... read more

Just finished an awesome time in Budapest, but I'm writing on my iPod again so I doubt I'll be able to type it all out on here. My first day I went for a walk down the Andrassy ùt, Budapest's grand boulevard. I had my Rick Steves book in hand and looked like a complete tourist, but there was absolutely no way I could've blended in there--the language is incredibly difficult to pick up. In fact, Hungarian's closest language relative is Finnish, and it's not even in the same language language family as the rest of the European languages. Anyway, I thought Andrassy ùt was pretty, but not spectacular in itself. What I really loved the first day was my visit to the Turkish baths. These are all over the city and are a Budapest tradition: ... read more

Days 49 - 50: Thursday, January 14th - Friday, January 15th. Budapest, Hungary. Day 49: Thursday, January 14, 2010. Budapest, Hungary. I decide to hang in the Castle area today (tired of that walk to and from the metro) and I head over to the Palace to take a tour (this link is to a virtual tour site that gives some tidbits of info on the palace). The Palace is now a couple of Museum's and, once again, I'm not a painting and sculpture kind of girl. I like to see architecture and furniture, I'm odd that way. So, I enjoyed the first floor that had a few stairwells here and there that showed the preserved cellars and what not. Then I quickly went thru the 2nd and 3rd floor as they were pretty much art ... read more

Days 47 - 48: Tuesday, January 12th thru Wednesday, January 13th. Budapest, Hungary. Day 47: Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Budapest, Hungary. "It's an adventure, it's an adventure, it's an adventure..." Yes, my internal chanting started early today. So, I get to the bus stop around 11:15 am because I'm meeting up with the Ausseis at Noon at the Szechenyi Bath House. I sit there for 20 minutes before going into a nearby hotel and asking them if the busses are running today. "No, there's a transit strike, only the metro is running." Hmm, ok. As far as I know, there's no metro stop nearby so I start walking towards the path that TG led us up yesterday. I text Mike and let him know that I might be a little late getting to the bath house. ... read more
