The bus trip from Paris to Amsterdam was uneventful, going through mostly flat land with forest on the side of the road at times. Oh, one event does stand out in our minds. At the first morning tea and wee break the line to the ladies went up two flights of stairs and was at least 25 minutes long. Most people were queuing patiently, but a large group of Indians - men, women and children walked up the stairs ignoring the queue, much to the mutterings of the Aussies. When the women realized that the queue was for the ladies they promptly went into the men’s, much to the consternation of our Aussie men at the urinals. There is no going through borders, in fact we didn’t even know until the guide said “welcome to Netherlands”. ... read more

Yesterday was plain awful. After splitting up with Margaret, Sam, and Gena I headed to the Luton airport. It took me two and half hours to get to the airport where I dramatically missed my flight, had to pay and book a new one for later and spent 7 hours in an Airport. Sadly, my friends also missed there flight to Rome! Word of warning - take extra time to get to the airports. On the plane I fell asleep and woke up to the worst pressure in my ears. When I arrived it was past midnight so my friend Tanya was unable to meet me because they have no public transportation that late. When I arrived at my friend Mulcahy's room he also had no idea when I was arriving and was gone. So there ... read more

June 3rd Wow, I though that being up until two would help me sleep for a long time, but nope, I woke up at 5:30 and couldn’t go back to sleep for EVER! I finally snoozed for about an hour between seven thirty and eight forty-five. Ouch. Elizabeth knocked on our door at nine and we were barely moving around. It is so hot here, and humid. Gah. So our plan for the day was to hike over to the Castle District in Buda and explore for a bit, and then maybe join Francis on a tour of the caves and such under the city. We made the hike, which was a bit longer than we were anticipating. Walks seem so much longer when it’s hot!! I wish I had a pedometer. I’m pretty sure we’ve ... read more

June 1st, 2011 It is eleven forty-five in the morning in Amsterdam, according to the clocks here. According to me, it is quarter to four in the morning and I’ve been staving off sleep in order to conform to the time zone I’ll be living in for the next nine weeks. * Yawn* Here are a few tips for future travelers: 1. Don’t put off packing until midnight the night before you leave, even if you don’t have much to pack. You’ll forget something and be seriously sleep deprived when you travel. 2. Taking only two bags doesn’t entirely count as packing light if you’re stuffing so much into your bags that you feel like you’re packing a sack of bricks around the airport. Ouch. 3. Don’t decide to do an intense hour and a half ... read more

I haven't updated this since Amsterdam so I thought I'd write in here even though I didn't leave Budapest this weekend. Today I visited a park called Memento Park with a couple of my friends from the dorm. This park is a dedication to the Communist Statues that were once on display in Budapest. When communism began to fell in Europe many statues and monuments were destroyed (the most famous statue to be destroyed was the one of Stalin in display in Budapest. More about that later). But in Hungary, many were saved. The one's that did survive the revolution made their way to Memento Park. The park is not actually in the city of Budapest, its more in the suburbs, so it took about an hour to get there. Its out in the middle of ... read more

And that's why I'm looking forward to Amman and its 35 degrees! grtz from budapest :) ... read more

This studying abroad thing is busy. Over the past weeks I've been busy going to classes, planning trips, exploring Budapest, and meeting new people. Its been so busy that I haven't had much time to update this. Lets see... Today was probably one of the best days I've had in Budapest. Most of the people in my dorm either went to Prague or Vienna this weekend. So this afternoon I explored around Budapest by myself. I walked up to the Statue of Liberty on the Buda side which was beautiful. I think that I took the back way up because I did not see one person on the trail until I got to the top. Although it was quite a hike I got a lot of good pictures of the city. Once I got to the ... read more

Day 12-Budapest, Hungary 8/28/10-Saturday We docked this morning early. I knew we were docking due to the way the boat was motoring. We were lucky in that our room was on the port side and when we looked out our window we were seeing the best view of Buda, the part of the city to the west. In fact, the view from my bed was right at the Chain Bridge with the Buda Castle (Royal Palace) in the background. At night, the bridge is well lighted creating a beautiful view. We started the day with a city tour by bus. We stopped at the neo-gothic Matthias Church. The church was named after King Matthias. Legend has it that, in the thirteenth century, he was called to return to Budapest by his mother using a raven with ... read more

Friday, August 27, 2010 - City tour of Buda & Pest I woke up a little after 7:15am and Mom was down at breakfast. I showered and got ready and she was back in the room when I came out of the bathroom. We packed up our little day bags with snacks and water and went down to the bus. Eva was our local guide that boarded at the hotel and we went on our way through Pest first. First stop was at Heroes' Square, built in 1896 to celebrate their millennium. The center monument is called the Millenium Monument. It is a 118 foot tall pillar which supports the archangel Gabriel as he offers the crown to St. Istvan. You can see the statue from many blocks away on Andrassy Ut. The Museum of Fine ... read more
