Day 44: Saturday, January 9th, 2010. Budapest, Hungary. Yea! Today I get to see Kinga! Kinga was a foreign exchange student at my high school in Shortsville, NY. HAHAHA! I have to interrupt this blog because when I went to get the link from Wikipedia from Shortsville I did some reading and I am very amused, Van Minos clan, to see you listed on this page! :) I thought they had people checking the facts on Wikipedia- hehehe. Okay, back to myself and Kinga: We lost touch with each other but, thru the power of Facebook, found each other once more. She and her boyfriend, Tibi, have planned a wonderful day for me and they swing by the hotel late morning to pick me up. It's so good to see her again! And Tibi seems wonderful ... read more

Day 43: Friday, January 8th, 2010. Pressath, Germany to Cologne, Germany to Budapest, Hungary. Egészségedre (aggie-she-god-ra) means "To your health!" Szya (ci-ya) means "hello" and "goodbye" Boldog Születésnapot (bulldog sully-nap-pot) means "Happy Birthday" Köszönöm (cos-sa-gnome) means "Thank you" There ya go, now you know all the Hungarian I know! So my plane leaves Munich around 11am (again, I'm writing this many days later so I don't really remember) and Dusty and I leave the house around 6am. Everyone in the area is in a tizzy about a snow storm that's supposed to come in and already the school has said they'll only have a half day and release the kids at Noon. So, should be a fun car ride to and fro for Dusty! I can't really say much about the car ride because, bei... read more

After yesterday, it was nice to have a quiet day. I checked out of the hotel, stored my luggage and went down to check out Wawel Castle. It was an easy walk, but the weather is so cold and windy. Looking at the weather online, it was a high of 40 and low of 34. I didn't have a lot of time, so looked around the courtyards of the castle, finding what's called the Lion's Den. It is a small spiral staircase that goes down the castle and leads to caves. It reminded me a lot of the Ape Caves in Washington. Luckily I didn't have to walk back up the stairs. I was on ground level, so headed back to the same restaurant I went to last night for more borscht. Had a pork cutlet ... read more

Budapest, Hungary - August 13th - 26th, 2009 After finaly leaving Prague we took a 3 hour train ride to Bratislava, Slovakia - my home country. We were greeted by, Marta, my moms best friend since childhood. Marta and her daughter Mirka welcomed us with open arms and treated us like family from the moment we met. They showed us around the town as only locals can. Thank you again for welcoming us into your family! Before heading to Budapest we also made a brief stop in Sahy, where my grandmother lived and where I spent most of my summers as a child. It was a very important stop for me because after over 10 years I had the opportunity to visit my grandparents grave site. A bitter sweet moment. Our stay in Bratislava and Sahy ... read more

Budapest, Hungary 9.2.09 Day two in Budapest was an eventful one to be sure. We began our morning with some fresh, “continental” breakfast at our Hotel Erzsebet. Continental breakfast in the US is often code word for cheap donuts, fake pastries, and bad fruit. This was not the case at our hotel. Breakfast consisted on fresh cheese, fresh fruit, fresh pastries, health food, what looked to be a salad bar, home made dips, yogurt and fresh granola. These food items were accentuated by fresh coffee (French pressed) and juices. What a great way to start our day. Over breakfast we decided on a three-hour city tour. This was the best way to see as much of the city as possible during our relatively short time frame (2.5 days in Budapest versus at 3 or 4 days ... read more

Another little bit of worthless information for your next trivial pursiut night for you.Hungary is situated in Eastern Europe but is their laguange Eastern European???Well,no it is not!!The language which is totally incomprehensible to English speaking people like us actually is a Finno-Ugric language going back to the Neolithic age from the Urals. So store that in your nec ktop computer for the next challenge down the pub on a Tuesday night!! Its another beautiful day(we hope we aren't boring you Southern Hempishere people coming out of a wet and cold winter)but the change in the weather last night has taken the heat out of the day and its likely to only get to 25C today so it should be much more comfortable for sightseeing. The road outside the hotel is quiet for a change and being ... read more

Here is something for the next time you play trivial pursuit and this question comes up.How did Budapest get its name???Well,Buda was the name for the old part of the city on the western side of the Danube while Pest is the name of the more recent part of the city on the eastern side of the Danube.Joined together the city became Budapest!!So there you go - you are all that much more knowledgable now. The weather changed overnight and it is much cooler this morning with a lot of cloud cover which will make walking about a bit easier than if the heat of yesterday had continued. We get breakfast with our €32 a night hotel so the toaster has stayed in the car!!The selection at breakfast is not too bad but someone had got ... read more

We spent a good amount of time last night checking out Google maps ready for the run to Budapest and getting down the instructions.I am on trial again as navigator and I have to pick my act up after what has now beome infamously known as 'the Vienna debacle'.!! The day has dawned beautifully fine again and the heatwave continues. It is a relatively short drive to Budapest even via the lesser roads we plan to take so we are not in a hurry. However we are still having breakfast when there is a tap on the door and they are wanting to prepare our room for the next lot of guests.Gretchen told the woman politely that we were not yet ready to leave and to come back later. We finished breakfast but it didn't seem ilke ... read more

You'll be relieved to hear I've had an eventful couple of days, which you may have already ascertained from the longwinded title. On Thursday night I introduced Aniko and Agi to The Clangers on You Tube. We were looking at some Hungarian children's cartoons, which I really enjoyed, so I retaliated with The Clangers and they really were very impressed. I was glad to be able to offer some high quality cultural treats for them other than ukulele songs. The Iron Chicken was a particular favourite. Along with the ukulele, The Clangers will soon be embedded in Hungarian daily life I have a feeling. On Friday morning we went for a little excursion up a very steep hill, it was incredibly hot and I almost collapsed from the heat. The others bounded up the hill and ... read more

Well this has got to be the most dramatic moment in the whole trip. A huge furry moth has just done a kamikaze manoevre by flying into my freshly cooked spaghetti. It was a horrific thing to behold. I'd literally just strained the pasta and left it for a moment to drain in the sink when the silly creature just went in head first got stuck but carried on flapping about so all the spaghetti turned brown with its wing dust. I looked on apalled. Partly because I have a morbid fear of oversized, becrazed moths and partly because I was really looking forward to eating a lovely plate of spaghetti. I even did a silly girly shriek (unbefitting of somebody in possession of a Swiss Army Knife). Agi came to my rescue, scooping the poor ... read more
