Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Seville May 23rd 2012

Hola!! This we I am proud to announce that I have gone and returned from my first SOLO trip in Europe! I planned, executed and wondered all by myself, woop woop! Monday morning I headed down to Seville, on the southern coast of spain. After taking only one wrong bus I found my great hostel, Oasis Backpacker's Palace, fit with lounge, pool, and bar. I grabbed some breakfast, locked up my bag and joined in a free walking tour of the city. We had a great guide, Angel, a local working for Pancho tours and started our tour at the Cathedral, the third largest in europe and the absolute largest in Spain. Attached is the arabic Giralda tower, used back in the day to sound when people should take a break and pray. Along the way ... read more

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid » Madrid May 14th 2012

Hola! After a week of reviewing for finals and trying to gain some color I took an overnight bus to spend the day at the Capitol of Spain, Madrid! Arriving at 9 AM, we had the whole day ahead of us to explore the city and enjoy the amazing 90 degree weather. Right away we started at the main plaza, Puerta del sol. With it's lively characters (literally, Mickey and Minnie) beautiful fountains and fish designed Metro entrance, it is one of the most unique spots in Madrid. At part of the Plaza is the 0 KM mark, the exact center of Spain which was one of my favorite spots. On the way to the Prado Museum we passed many statues, and one really great one of Neptune in the center of a roundabout. Getting to ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Amalfi May 7th 2012

Ciao from Capri, Sorrento, Positano and Pompeii Italy! WHEW! What an amazingly beautiful and serene weekend I had with the Bus2Alps crew heading down the Amalfi Coast. After flying into Rome, taking a bus into the city just to have dinner (crazy right?) we were ready for the 3 hour ride to our hostel, Hotel 7. This hotel was absolutely beautiful with pebble stoned flooring in the main room with convertible open rooftop, both base floor and rooftop bars and comortable 8 person rooms it was definitely the best place I've stayed at so far! Each room had a cute name that started with the same letter, changing depending on what floor you were on but of course we were the "Sweet" room! The first day started off pretty early and after a bit of a ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona » Barcelona April 30th 2012

Hola familia y amigos! Trip and adventure-less this weekend (very relaxing!!) I have been walking the city and decided to write about a few of my favorite things about Barcelona, Spain, and Europe in general! There are so many aspects of the life here that I love and admire and can't wait to take back with me, the ones that I can at least. I can't put them in order and some have pictures along with them, but others wont, and of course most pictures truly do not give the places and things I love enough credit. Graffiti- Here, especially so in Barcelona, graffiti is it's own art. Every shop-gate door, delivery truck and even the ground itself has messages artistically designed in spraypaint. English, Spanish Catalan and just pictures tells stories of the thoughts behind ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam April 24th 2012

Hallo!! I can't believe I only have about a month left! Time is FLYING! This weekend I hopped a flight to Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands. Its located on the Amstel river but the whole city is built over and around dozens of canals. We took the train from the airport and landed right in the middle of the city. Central Station is HUGE, although Grand Central is still my favorite station ;) We checked into the Flying Pig Hostel, packed with students decorated mis-matched wtih a pool table bar and "Piggies" menu. After dropping our stuff off we wandered our neighborhood checking out little shops, including one truly amazing cheese shop with endless amounts of free samples. If I had room in my backpack and suitcase of treasures, I would have bought at least 4 ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Lloret de Mar April 17th 2012

Hola mi familia y amigos! This was quite a special weekend here in Barcelona becuase we were celebrating Nuria's birthday!! The girls and I planned her a few surprises to make her day special. On Friday we got all kinds of supplies together and when we came back home late, we decorated the whole living room for her to wake up to! She was very surprised and yes, they are still all up ;) Saturday was her actual birthday and after we had gone to visit Park Cuidatella (a few metro stops away and absolutely BEAUTIFUL gardens and blooming trees, not to mention the amazingly crafted small palace with DRAGON fountains...OH and a giant elephant!), we all went to work to make cards and search for the perfect gift! For dinner we had Gaspaxto soup and ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona » Barcelona April 9th 2012

Hola! As many of you know, and have celebrated, it is Holy Week! I know that it isn't celebrated very intensely, except for Easter Sunday with egg hunts, candy baskets and a nice ham back home but here it's an entire week-end of celebration! Each day has it's own sort of festival and special dinner. Good friday, we ate catfish with hard boiled eggs artichoke and red peppers, yum-o! Usually the meals here are up to 3 seperate plates, but this was so big and had all the nutrients we needed in one. Later in the afternoon there is a Procession "The way of the cross" down on Ramblas, and through the Gothic Quarter. It is with the priests and other religious folk of St. Jaume church dressed in robes. Following them is two decorated floats ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome April 3rd 2012

Ciao! To start off my spring break I headed off to the eternal city of Rome!! Of course the day we headed out there was a general strike in spain, so possibly all transportation for the 29th was closed and we had to stay the night in the aiport but it was worth it! After being up all night in the airport, when we arrived in rome we decided to take it easy in our WONDERFUL hotel and figure the plan of attack for the upcoming days. There were so many things to see and just enough time :) We had dinner down the block and enjoyed some Gnocci and chicken! Early friday we went down to Roberto's where the hotel gives us a ticket to get breakfast, the off through Termini station to the Vatican ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona » Monistrol de Montserrat March 25th 2012

Hola! This week new classes started and while language classes stay the same, my culture classes are now Spanish Modern and Contemporary Art and Hispoamerica Culture through literature art and painting, and we get to go on a field trip tomorrow! Field trips, siestas, beaches and sangria? This just might be paradise! After travelling around the past couple weeks, I decided to take and easy weekend and enjoy Barcelona and take a trip to nearby Montserrat! This is an area built into the mountains with a lot of religious and catalan historical value. When Nepolian found the town, he destroyed it and once the people started to rebuild Franco put the laws that rejected Cataluynian culture into affect and the project was postponed. Franco's death fueled the reconstruction and rebirth to this amazing landscape, which is ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin March 21st 2012

Slainte! This weekend I was lucky enough to go to the homeland for a true irish St. Patrick's celebration! Taking an early flight, with practically all americans (go figure), I arrived in Dublin at about 9 a.m. From the plane I could already see I was going to absolutely love the landscape of the country. I've never seen grass so green, not even in Papoo's yard! We went to our first hostel, in a residential part of Dublin and then headed out toward the Guinness factory! On the way we walked up to Grafton Street and walked through Stephen's Green, a great park with flowers in bloom, swans in the pond and I saw a commercial getting filmed! Grafton Street was bustling with St. Patty's traffic and city workers setting up for the next day's festivities. ... read more
