We are now back at Amaliada, going each day to the beech of Kourouta. This area is a farm community with farming of hugh pumpkins and watermellon just sitting out in the fields. We drove past many vegetables stands with the hugh vegetables witting pretty and looking so delicious. The water is so beautiful, the night time with a long walkway along the beech full of people eating, corn being grilled ontop of grills, bars with lovely lounges and music and lights. Ice cream a favorate of our again. Each day we would swim again and sit under the grass umbrellas. A nice drink in our hands of nice mixed juices. We also spent time walking in the night in the square of Amaliada, visiting Alex while he was working at the crepe shop. How nice. ... read more

Well, our cruise was everything we hoped for and more. First of all, we bough deck class. Its a 30ish hour ferry and we bough deck class, which means we were crammed into a big room (ok, not crammed, but there were maybe 50 other people in the room) that was half inside and half outside. So, if it got cold, we were basically screwed. Just before the boat took off, people started claiming their spots in the room. People pulled out hammocks, cots and airmattresses. Laura and I, and 2 other girls, were the only people without the sleeping hookup. We had no sleeping bags (but we had a sheet!) no mattresses, and very limited warm clothes. The floor was metal and very cold. I then overheard someone talking about how the airline reclining ... read more

I left Corfu on saturday the 7th of april for the peloponese city of Patras. As i carfully stepped over borken peices of pottery, which had been hurled from windows as part of the easter celebrations, and doged the horeds of people and fire works that were randomly being set off, I considered trying to stay on the island for a bit longer. But I had already booked passage on on a ferry that would sail for 8 hours to the main land, and besides i had spent almost a week on the Island and I was getting a little to comfortable there. I took those all as sgins that it was time to move on. As I sat starring out the window on the ferry i started wondering what I was going to do ... read more

Down the cliff, a night-lit city spread before us. Above in the star-studded sky, bats swept through the spotlights. Within, there were only three of us, travelers raiding a silent fortress. We crept about the shadows, discovering the silence of an overcome fortress, and when daylight rose, we left toward a theatre; one of the largest, most grandiose and well preserved of the antiquities. Upon the very top of its limestone steps, the singular pluck of a violin reached our ears soundly while various tongues bellowed in a one-minute fame of limelight. With the days to come, we furthered ourselves across this mythical landscape of Greeceā€™s southern terrace, hitchhiking into an ancient Byzantium civilization where they once held their last output of wealth. Here, along the road, idle for a ride, we picked bags full of ... read more

This was the beginning of a two-day adventure that I just completed. Sidenote: I lost the camera cable, so I'll have to find another way to upload the photos (maybe someone around the hostel can help... I'll check tomorrow). Day 12 started out in Athens. I crawled out of bed in the hostel, still groggy and fighting off the cold. Also, the guy from Brazil was coughing all not... sounded pretty bad and so I tried to stay away from him. The girl in the room (mixed dorm - him, her, and me) was from D.C. We caught the bus to the train station at about 7:40 am. I tried to catch an early train to Patras, but missed it, so I went to a cafe and got breakfast. Not too eventful. The train to Patras ... read more

One of the most fascinating visits we had in Greece was to the Tholos Tombs (Domed Tombs) of the Bronze Age. The burial chambers we visited were on the outskirts of the famous village of Marathon. Nothing remains inside due to thieves who visited these Beehive shaped burial chambers over the centuries, however they are still beautiful, empty as they are. To get there we had to pass through the Corinth Canal, and when we stopped for a short break we met a very old lady who promised us that she has magical powers. If we buy some of her hand made souvenirs, some of these powers would be passed on to us. Who could refuse such a sweet and magical lady? The area also lies a few kilometres away close to the mountains and lake next ... read more

Patras wasn't the nicest town and is only worth a night to get a ferry to the unbelievably gorgeous Ionian Islands. I stayed at the HI Hostel there (see photo), which is apparently permanently closed. It was an SS Headquarters during WWII.... read more
