Geo: 38.2381, 21.7392 GÜN 4 Günlerden Pazar Patras (Yunanca: Πάτρα / Patra, 1974'e kadar: Πάτραι / Pátrai, Osmanlı döneminde: Balyabarda), Yunanistan'ın Atina ve Selanik'ten sonra üçüncü büyük şehridir. Atina'nın 215 km batısında, Korint Körfezi ile Akdeniz'in birleştiği noktada bulunur. Gemimizi buldum Check in yapmak gerekiyormuş onu da yaptık..... memur ilgisiz bir tavırla 30 ... read more

BARI Day 57 Uneventful day of trains that break and then have to get on a bus and then back on a train and finally making it to the ferry. The ferry was a superfast and it was both super and fast. I found it really comfortable and a really nice journey. When I wake up it will be to Greece! PATRA Day 58 The ferry finally docked in Patra Greece. The coast at Patra is beautiful and it is just a port town so I can’t imagine how the rest of Greece will be. The ferry arrived in Patra at noon and I quickly learned that the train system in Greece is practically non-existent and that parts that do run suck! So I waited three hours for the train in to Athens. While I ... read more

29th May ‘09: Finding a football stadium without a map is reasonably simple. A DAF garage on Thrakis Street, Patras, however, is quite another matter. Spaznavs and Autoroute 2007 are next to useless down here; one has to use “the force” instead. Or buy a map. Although a map is a sensible, well-founded notion in, say London or Berlin, this is Greece - and they use funny letters to confound us. A Patras map does exist - with streets marked in the Roman alphabet - but the index is in Greek. We’re stumped. Patras is not a small hamlet of half a dozen avenues. The solution, then, is for Little Dick to scout ahead, paying a taxi driver to lead the way, and to call me with garbled directions. Voila, Namibian and I arrive with a ... read more

Location: Katakolon and Olympia Weather: Sunny, 34 °C I have a true appreciation of how students feel about listening and work when it is hot! Today I travelled to Olympia - site of the original Olympic games but while the guide was explaining things all I was trying to do was find some shade. It was a bit like the episode of the Simpsons told from the dog’s perspective, every time the humans spoke the dog heard random sounds - I was listening but not listening. The Museum at Olympia was good, the air conditioning made it so. Some of the artefacts collected from the Olympia site were very beautiful. The funniest statute was from the Roman period - often Roman statues have separate heads - this is because the Emperor could change so frequently that ... read more

We're ın Greece. I know you're not meant to pass opınıon when travel wrıtıng, the strength of the wrıtıng should convey all. Bugger ıt. We lıke Greece. We've only spent one day here but ıt has already endeared ıtself more than Italy dıd ın almost a fortnıght. Takıng that short ferry has shuttled us from one European country to another, whıch seems half a world apart. If not half a world ıt must have been a tıme capsule to a world half a century apart. We have travelled fıve hours from the ferry port and made camp by the sea, on roads and ın towns that could not be more dıfferent from theır European neıghbour. Lıfe seems slower here, the traffıc for one thıng ıs defınıtely slower. Gone ıs the murderous agressıon of the Italıan drıver, ... read more

Ever wonder where we got the English word "gymnasium" from? I know I have...n't. (lol) Perhaps it wasn't a shock that we borrowed the word from the Ancient Greeks, but what surprised the hell out of me was that it meant "place to be naked." As in bare-bottomed, with all your bits and pieces on display for public inspection. Er? I think we have another English equivalent to that though...it's more commonly referred to as "porn," in my native tongue, lol. Athletes would also slather their naked bodies with healthy amounts of olive oil to imbue their skin with a healthy glow, so as to appeal to the spectators of the Games...which were all men. Women weren't allowed even to watch the events. ... So what exactly does that say about the Greeks in the realm ... read more

I can't believe it has been nearly a month since I last posted! I have been keeping very busy and life has certainly been pretty hectic. As usual, Greece has been a lot of fun! On the sixth of March my program took us on a tour of Brauron and Sounion. Brauron used to be a Temple to Artemis and Iphigenia and Sounion was a Temple to Poseidon with a smaller Temple to Athena across the way. The weather was a bit dreary due to a sandstorm blowing over Greece from the Sahara, but all in all it was a great day of touring and both sites were amazing! Midterm exams were the week of the 9th to the 12th. My week wasn't too bad, just one exam and one paper. I also had a presentation, ... read more
