Sunday !st March To those of you who have held your breath for the next exciting instalment .... I'm sorry! Catching up on 17th March. Leaving the ferry at Patras the sat nav. decided not to work , so we followed our new German friends out onto the highway, finding out later that they were following a greek man who was f0llowing .. no, not really. Later when the sat nav did work, we had a hair-raising journey , cars and motor bikes over-taking from both sides at great speeds. Finding Pireaus was o.k. but the Ferry terminal.. a night mare, no signs and we were following a tram sometimes, we only had a short time to get to the Kos ferry but after going round a roundabout the wrong way and racing through the narrow ... read more

Sunday 1st March 2009 We had agood start off to Ancona,a little misty on the along the road but no problems untill we got stopped by an Italian policeman for not having our lights on in a little tunnel, he fined us 30 euros! All the while people are thundering past at twice the speed limit. Bastardo! The scenery was unexpectedly beautifull all the way along the Auto strada Atlantico. Arriving at the Ferry port in good time to buy tickets and be near the front of the queue. Rob was chatting to a Greek man in front , who suggested that we keep on the ferry to Patras, this would save us 200 kms driving. We had thought that t his was another ferry so we were very happy. The Olympic Palace really is a ... read more

Our final 4 days would be spent with Chatours with about 18 people on a bit larger bus. Gianis would be our directore and guide. Adonis would be our driver. There seemed to be several hours a day driving from point to point with frequent bathroom and lunch breaks. But each stop along the way seemed to bring new levels of awe and wonder. ... read more

So, the storm following us has had to give up its water to cross the Adriatic. Did this mean it would give up? No. Of course not. So the second day after we arrived in Athens, the wind blows up - sunshades wrench at their moorings, and up on the Acropolis, unimpeded by the buildings below, the wind howls through the ruins of temples and ancient monuments, driving stinging dust and a steady stream of dislodged sun-hats before it. And nothing catches dust like sun-creamed legs. The overall effect, however, was very impressive. The feeling of an abandoned, spirit-haunted, ancient place was inescapable, even through the omnipresent crowds of chattering tourists. The they were all below the notice of the columns towering over them, and beyond the statues impassive, blankly eternal gaze. This was a place ... read more

Thoughts so far: Some random thoughts on the trip so far. The high (good) points. The Alps, climbing out of the rain into glorious sunshine, and the run to Mt Blanc. The Valle De Aosta and stopping in Pont St Michael. Eating in Bourg En Bresse, regional French food of great quality. The hotel had antique bikes, They let me sit on a pre-war Guzzi. The low (bad) points The rain in France, learning that my boots leak. Being able to to wring out leather. Being wet. The ugly. The rain from Dijon to Bourg en Bresse, the spray. An hour and a half of the most atrocious riding conditions and done after a few hours of less bad but not pleasant, It really was terrible. Dark, low visibility, surface water, and vehicles at high speed. ... read more

Day 5 Sailed into the small town of Katakolon on the coast of western Greece. This is the closest port to the famous ruins of Olympia. Bus to the site and we weren’t disappointed. The Olympic torch is lit some month before the start of each Olympic Games at a very insignificant spot in the complex. On our return to the ship, we stopped at a tavern and were given light snack food including local octopus and then entertained by music and Zorba dancing. (video included) ... read more

I was headed into an inferno, at least, that was what the news story on the Internet led me to believe. It was old news really, I remembered first hearing about the fires burning across the Peloponnesian Peninsula when I was in Rhodes a few weeks before. I had never even considered changing my plans due to the fires, though. After all, I had lived for many years in California where forest fires were commonplace and I was only going to get one chance of ‘seeing’ six of the Seven Wonders of the World before it was time to go home. I figured that as long as the transportation was still running I was going to stick to my plan. My bus ride out of Delphi went flawlessly. We descended the slopes of Mt. Parnassus to ... read more

On Sunday, July 15th, we traveled by car for 3 hours, (certainly it would have taken me 9 hours for sure with the 2 lane hiway with most driving on the shoulder to allow traffic to pass in the middle from both sides) and with all the turns and curves. Nick is a fast driver as all are here. The road goes through country and cities and villages, through the Korinthos Canal. Beautiful. Also beautiful was the new hugh Rio Antirrio Suspension Bridge at Patra. So impressive. The overnight stay at Alex's apartment and then to the beech and eating picalea at night so wonderful. Then on Monday off on the ferry to the island of Kefalonia.... read more
