This 2-day stopover Santorini was booked as it was the only way we could get to Athens that worked with our flight to Copenhagen. We had fun again in Santorini and agree with everyone else that it is a beautiful island. We realized that the first time we were here earlier this summer we got caught in what we call the "cruise loop": the boat people (as Mom likes to call them) wander around in a tight circle looking at different shops. You may recall we tried to find a souvlaki stand last time and ended up having a fabulous meal at Nouassa Restaurant. This time we walked around ALL of Fira and found a million souvlaki stands! But we still went back to Nouassa for lunch our first day and had the best lunch of ... read more

Day 490 (14/8/09) Early start as we packed up our tent and our gear which we had managed to spread throughout the car and made our way to the Heraklion Port. We arrived early to collect our tickets, yet we had no idea just how hard that would be. We dropped the car off, and headed to the ticket office, (unbeknown at the time with the wrong reference number) who directed us to another ticket booth who directed us to the main ticket office at the Old port, 20 minutes later we arrived at the Old port to be told the tickets weren't there they were where we had just came from, back to the original ticket office who redirected us to temporary office near the boat, we arrived there just as the ticket officer was ... read more

Day 494 (18/8/09) After a entertaining night, our neighbours leaving to go out just before midnight and returning after 5am when the gates reopened perhaps just a little inebriated. We bought breaky and headed to the beach for a day of relaxing, reading, beach tennis and swimming in the chilly water. We took a stroll down the beach only to find ourselves in the 'naturalist section' opps and quickly retreated back to our family area. Continuing our international cruisine we had dinner at the local Italian restaurant and spent the evening playing cards. Day 495 After the domestics of hand washing (thank God I was born in the washing machine era), we got the bus into Naxos town with nothing specific to see. We arrived by the port and walked up to the huge door way ... read more

I am a beach. The individual grains of sand are not unique and do not have a voice of their own. Do not mistake me, I am happy to have them, as I am happy to have the stones, sea life and trees. They all listen intently to my words, but without a voice, all they offer in return is a living burqua to cover my nakedness. The wind tonight is acting like an amourous man, desperately trying to blow my cover away for a glimpe of my naked being. I am wise to the wind, but must admit I do entice him occassionaly to cool me in the heat or to bring wave after wave to wash me when I have been soiled upon by a disprespectful dog or drunken human. Tonight the wind has ... read more

Location: Syros Island (Cyclades Islands) Weather: Sunny, northerly wind. 33 °C I've decided to record the weather each day, just to rub it in how I'm now experiencing summer! We arrived on Syros at 11pm on Friday night, Hermoupolis was very busy this late at night - this weekend was the Festival for the Virgin Mary so it is a public holiday and there have been lots of celebrations; music and fireworks. It is also the middle of the summer holidays, Syros is one of the holiday hotspot for Athenians so the town is fairly busy all summer. It also helps being only 4 hours by Ferry from Piraeus, the ferry was very crowded as lots of people were going to the next Island after Syros, - Mykonos! Everyone is out at night enjoying the night ... read more

After a very long flight I have finally found myself in Greece. Starting in Athens and only staying there for 1 day was a great choice. Besides the Acropolise there is not much else and they don't take very good care of their city. It has loads of grafitti and is dirty. I can't believe that when I got to the Acropolis my camera decided not to work and I was unable to take any photos. Ah well I will just have to go back! LOL It is another amazing place though. Just like seeing the pyramids in Egypt and of course it came with loads and loads of tourists grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Following my visit to the Acropolis I headed straight to a camera shop to see if they could fix it. Sure enough I took it ... read more

Not joking. I'm firing myself as our travel agent. Got up at 3am. Took a taxi to the Lisboa airport, a plane to Munich, a plane to Athens, a rushed taxi ride to Piraeus, a 5-hour ferry ride in economy to Paros, waited an hour for a bus to Punda because it was too windy for the normal passenger ferry, which then took us to the car ferry to Antiparos. We arrived after Midnight, trying to find our hotel (it was one we'd not stayed at before). In bed by 1am. There are no pictures from this day. (I have to explain, the were no seats left on the ferry when we booked it in July so we got stuck with Economy, which means you have to sit outside--if you can find a seat--with a million ... read more

Maya learned about Greece this year in school. So on our home trip, we decided to go Greece . On the way stopped by Heidelberg to see Jason and his family and then went to Greece. We had told our travel agent in India that we would like to see the Parthenon and go to an island that was not very touristy. So we went to Athens and she suggested we go to Tinos island. Tinos, a small island in the Aegean sea was just perfect. We highly recommend it. It is just beautiful, blue and white like the colors of the Greek flag. There are hardly any people on the islands. When we were wandering around in the afternoon, there was not a soul around. Must have been siesta time. We met some wonderful people ... read more

Day 479 (3/8/09) Slightly underestimating how tired we were we were lucky to make it up by morning. Calling for a well needed day of R & R, the ashes celebrations had really taken their toll. With a map in hand we headed our for 'brunch' stopping at Oasis cafe in the Old town and straight into some traditional cuisine; Souvlaki and Greek Salad. We wandered around in the blistering heat, cooling our feet off in the ocean (not prepared for swimming at the time). But the airconditioned comfort willed us back. After getting slightly lost on the way back to our room, we booked our onward ferry and bludged on the net for a while. After a home made dinner on our balcony we headed back to the old town for another look, until our ... read more
