The challenge was to find a Greek island that would be authentic, relaxed and not heaving with tourists in the middle of July. The assumption was that if you could not fly directly there it would be cutting out swathes of tourists already. So in the end we settle on Batsi, Andros in the Cyclades islands about 2 hours east of Athens by fast ferry. Really it was a perfect compromise. A spirinkling of bars and restaurants, an archaeological musem, some beautiful beaches but very, very few Brits. We stayed in Sunset studios in Stivari just on the outskirts of Batsi town. Today was a magnificent but crazy day. In my quest to make sure I saw ALL of the island, I rented a car. Yes, you read that right, I rented a car. I am pretty sure America is the only place where they care about you being 25 years of age (and I guess this means that I have no more birthdays to look forward to, bummer). Perhaps driving in Greece after not driving at all for three months wasn’t the smoothest move. Literally, definitely not. Probably figuratively so too. Speaking of crazy roads, there are many here. We complain a lot about the roads in Northern Virginia, and they do sometimes leave a lot to be desired, but they’ve got NOTHING on Santorini’s roads. Nonetheless, 10 minutes and 35 euros later, I drove off in ... read more

Well, Oia was spectacular. It was definitely the most picturesque part of the island that I have seen so far (I think on Friday I am going to get that rental car to explore the southern part of the island). Unfortunately, because of the clouds, the sunset was a little disappointing. However, the views were great. It is kind of nice since there are so few tourists here, its like we all have this common bond. We all rode the crazy bus together. (To get to Oia you have to take this jarring cliff-side road. I cannot imagine driving a car, much less a bus, along that road!) We all were trying to find the best place to watch the sun set. I loved how there is a sign painted on the side of one of ... read more

Well it is already raining in Greek island paradise. Bummer. In paradise’s defense, it was bright and sunny when I got here just a few hours ago. My room is great. I have my own balcony with a view of the water! When the sun comes back it is going to make a fab spot for reading. I already made it into the town of Fira, which is the capital of Santorini. Since it is December, it is pretty quiet. During the summer I think Santorini is pretty touristy, so right now it is a bit like a ghost town. Not to say there aren’t things open, but there do seem to be many things closed. I found a nice looking café where I wanted to eat lunch, but was told they were only serving coffee ... read more

Rhodesh Chodesh Kalimera (Good Morning) from RHODES, Greecre Such a charming Greek Island with Roman, Greek and Crusader History. Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Island and fourth largest of all Greek Islands. It lies only seven miles from the Turkish coast. the island is known for its natural beauty as well as its historical and archeological treasures. In Ancient times, the entrance to tts harbour featured a celebrated landmark, the 105 foot statue, known as the Colossus of Rhodes, which was considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. Rhodes was an important centre in the 3rd to the 5th centuries as part of both the Roman and Byzantine empires. A five minute walk from the Port took us through the main city gate of the 600 year old Crusader ... read more

This morning I went on the same running course as yesterday. I knocked three minutes off my time from having the benefit of knowing the terrain. And no walking or stops. It felt good. After a small lunch, I returned to the same beach as yesterday. There were a few more people there today. And it also appears as if this is a topless beach. While that sounds appealing in theory, in reality it’s not. The women that go topless tend to be older and massive. Those that are more attractive tend to be self conscious, prudish or there with their over protective boyfriends/husbands. I ended up at the same spot as yesterday, about 50 yards from a couple of older women. Before long, an older gent joined them and stripped down to the buck. Okay. ... read more

Last night I got some much needed sleep. Well rested, I went for a run to familiarize myself with part of the island. I set out towards the beach where I’d likely spend most of my day. Getting there was easy. There is one road that leads down to the beach and it is entirely downhill. Along the way I stopped a few times to take pictures of the gorgeous views of the surrounding sea. About 3km in, I had passed the long, deserted beach and hit a dead end. It was time to head back up the steep hill. I made it back about 20 minutes later after laboring up the hill and having to walk a couple times to catch my breath. After cleaning up and grabbing a sandwich from the nearby market I ... read more

Last night I got a terrible night’s sleep. Trying to get to bed early proved to be a futile effort as people celebrated the nice weather out on their balconies into all hours of the night. One girl laughed like a hyena after every sentence someone spoke. Sometimes I think she even laughed at her silly laugh. And when all that finally calmed down, one of my roommates had a great snore. Now I’d be hypocritical if I said I never had a good one myself. But I’d like to think that mine periled in comparison to this one. This guy had no less than four different styles covered, each of them as loud and annoying as the one before. At one point I thought he might choke to death. Around 5:45 I called it quits, ... read more

We set sail from Piraeus with light rain and gentle breezes. As is customary on this Line, the sails are raised to the sounds of Vangelis: its not as cheesy as it sounds particularly with this much sail! The cruise has continued with winds below 25kts and just one night anyone would regard as rough. There are currently about 120 passengers aboard and this will reduce to about 50 for the crossing. The crew and passengers come from 35 countries though passengers are primarily. Europeans, Yanks and Australians. Greg has had his hands on the wheel just once so far but more to come. The ship is reaching under 75% of its sails and about 9kts: no greyhound. Mykonos was lovely with the picturesque harbour and whitewashed houses and narrow lane ways. Particularly good because the ... read more

October 1, 2009 Judy and I were the first passengers off the ship on tenders today along with only three other crew going ashore right at 8am. I guess the others had later tours planned or just slept in. At least in Patmos, there is no huge hill to get up and down from the port. The port is conveniently located right in downtown. We didn't exactly have a plan today but found a rent a car place straight across from where the tender dropped us off. They had a nice little car available for 30 Euro that was much better than the beater we had on Santorini the day before. A right at the circle and we were headed up the hill to visit the cave where John the Evangelist was exiled and wrote most ... read more
