In order to provide some additional time in this fascinating land we back track to Ashdod, the port developed to relieve the congestion of Tel Aviv. This gives us an opportunity to see Caesarea, the Roman port city developed by Herod and named after Caesar to facilitate the Mediterranean trade. With an ongoing archaeology dig this is a National Park. Included in the excavations are The Theater, Promontory Palace, Herodian Amphitheater, Bathhouse Complex, ancient outdoor running water toilets, Fortified Medieval City, The Harbour, The Statues Square, the Hippodrome (circus) and the Roman Wall. Movies at the beginning and end of the tour recount the 3000 years of history involved. A windshield tour of our guide’s home city Tel Aviv reveals a vibrant cosmopolitan environment without the marked religiosity of Jerusalem. Our guide reports the expression: while ... read more

We arrived in Rhodes early in the morning and as we cruised into Mandraki Harbor. We could see three medieval windmills. They were originally used to grind the grain unloaded from the merchant ships in the harbor. The mouth of the harbor had two sentinels...A male deer and a female deer standing on columns. Elafos and Elafina are the names of the deer and they are the symbols (Strength and Wealth) of the island. We passed the St. Nicholas Fortress which has a light house on the fortress so the ships can find their way into port. There were just as many old fishing boats as there were yachts. We began our tour at the walls of the Old Town. We left the bus and walked through the Gate d' Amboise to the Palace of the ... read more

Sunday May 12th, 2013. Rhodes, Greece Rhodes is one of the largest Greek islands and has been inhabited since the Stone Age. It has a temperate climate and mild winters which makes it a popular year-round resort. After breakfast we met Alan and Karen by the gangway at 8.45 am as we had arranged last night. We docked at the city of Rhodes at the north tip of the Island. We had planned to take the local bus to Lindos but as we exited the port gates we found a very reasonably priced car rental place. We decided to hire a car instead as it would give us more flexibility to see other things - and we had a reasonably long day here, not having to be back onboard until 5.30 pm (and, we found out ... read more

All roads led to Rhodes but nightfall had already set in as we skulked through the gates and into the safe confines of the Old City walls. Given the surroundings we almost expected a Knight of the Round Table to clank past in his gleaming suit of armour and sporting a jousting pole under the armpit. The skeleton of Rhodes Town is Medieval from head to toe. It would have been more palatable had we not been toting backpacks and horribly disoriented. Trying futilely to locate our pension tucked into an obscure corner of this labyrinth was proving a challenge with sketchy directions and a map shy on detail. An aerial perspective would have looked like one of those mazes where the mouse tries to hunt down the piece of cheese. We eventually stumbled onto our ... read more

I arrived in Rhodes after an overnight ferry spent in my own private cabin. My window was on the bow of the ship, which meant I saw the ship's approach into Rhodes perfectly and spectacularly. I was thinking how dramatic it would've been if the Colossus of Rhodes still stood at the entrance to the harbor. Apparently it was about the size the Statue of Liberty before it crumbled into the sea as a result of an earthquake. All I have to say is they need to build another one. That is all Rhodes needs to ascend to a must see stop on every world travelers itinerary. My original plan was to stay in the walled old city for the entire week, but that is when I thought it was a legitimate lived in part of ... read more

*Bing* The seatbelt sign had been switched off, in just over 4 hours we knew that we would be touching down in one of the most beautiful places I have been too to date. Sure I have been to the beautiful GreekIsland of Rhodes before but we had to go back again. This time it was another big family trip. As the plane curved round the island to land on the runway, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the waves that crash against the shoreline – this is the windy side of the Island, I reminded myself. The busy-ness of the airport was so intense and hard to cope with. The Greek Authorities had been on strike too, which meant just a few people handling the baggage from all the flights - nightmare! It took ... read more
