Well I arrived safe and sound in Sunny Rodos, no major problems with flights, although they still are very strict with liquids in your hand luggage so be warned anyone flying out in the near future. I would certainly recommend going via London Gatwich again as no problems there in doing the transfer and all my luggage arrived at the same time as me (even though I did fly B.A!!) Feels like I've been here for weeks, but this is only the start of my 3rd day! It is a lot hotter today (been very windy over past couple of days). Am going to Kos next week for a few days with my friends, taking the boat and staying in a rather nice hotel - www.kosaktis.gr (hang the expense!!) Well that's all for now, off to ... read more

After a mammoth 13 hour bus ride, I arrived on the coast in Marmaris and booked my ferry ride across to Greece. After another 4 hour wait, I was off, and a couple of hours later I was on Greece soil. The first sight was of big medieval walls surrounding the city, which was pretty cool. I wandered around and went into the first accomodation place I found and it turned out to be the top budget hostel in the Lonely Planet guide! Score! The rest of the day was spent doing a bit of exploring around the medieval cobbled streets. It turns out that this is the oldest lived in Medieval city in the world. Very cool. The following day, no one told me, but it was a public holiday and basically nothing was ... read more

Well it's now only 19 days til I leave for Rhodes. Can't believe it's here - this trip has been nearly 2 years in the planning (& saving!). Looking forward to some quality "me" time, enjoying long walks, having leisurly beers and enjoying the fantastic weather. I'll keep you all updated of my time here!! (and make you all jealous of my growing sun tan!)... read more

I'm writing from Roma (Rome)! On Saturday, my travel girls and I left our island resort on Rhodes, which was absolutely gorgeous and I loved the Greek-ness of it all. Athens, on the other hand, has the cool ancient ruins and Acropolis, but is a noisy, dirty city where I didn't feel very safe. Thank God we're now in beautiful Roma, with the Colosseum just down the street and pizzerias and gelato (ice cream) stands on every corner... (Each day is compiled from the handwritten diary I'm keeping.) Sunday, March 25 Twenty-four hours ago (including losing 3 hours due to time zones and Daylight Savings) I was impatiently waiting in the Winchester McDonald's for the bus to take us to Heathrow. Now, I am sitting in a posh suit at a beautiful island resort in ... read more

I haven't posted in a while but I need to tell the world how excited I am about going to Greece this summer!!! Since my girlfriend wasn't able to get out of taking summer classes, I'm forced to go by myself. Travelling alone is something that I've wanted to do for a long time now. The fact that I've been to Rhodes many times in the past should make things go a lot smoother. The only problem that I'm running into at this moment is the fundraising effort here. I'm going to need to do something to make some extra cash before I go. Hopefully my tax return will be fruitful. My Greek aunt will be coming to the states next week so I'll be able to ask her if I can stay in the bedroom ... read more

I finally bought my ticket to Rhodes!!! Even though I used to go there every summer, I haven't been in about 10 years. I got a decent deal from Orbitz.com so I'm pretty happy about that. In the 10 years that I didn't go to Greece, I travelled all over the USA with a couple of drum and bugle corps. I'll be flying from Tampa, Fl to Rhodes, Greece on May 29th and returning on June 27th. Email me if you're going to be there!!... read more

A perturbed Athenian quenched his divulgence. He chose me and filled my carefree mind, causing the strange restlessness of a pilgrim whom sets his first steps upon a long, unending journey. Like Ulysses’ banishment from home by angered Poseidon, I was on another island, the island of Rhodes, and the restlessness came surging in a torrent of tides. Another languid day of exploration had passed when it struck full force, and I was then on the town beach taking my evening bath. The sun was setting, west below the island of Symi and the exotic land of Turkey. And like Ulysses, this restlessness grew, springing forthwith from the churning waters of the directional soul. Passing Rhodes The day had been uneventful; a ferry the evening prior from Karpathos, the sleep and enjoyment in a first of ... read more

I arrived in Rhodes at 1 am Saturday night, actually that's Sunday morning, without a place to stay. I had slept little on the 12 hour ferry ride from Crete. Imagime this large ferry arrives and hundreds of people are let loose on Rhodes, some of us without places to stay. There were a couple of owners of pensions there. I found a hostel owner who had no beds. Then a man approached me wanting 50 euros a night. I said no. Then I found the owner of Mike's hostel waiting for about 20 young French campers. But he had a single room left, and only 20 euros. So we all went to his place winding our way through the crowded and cobbled streets. My room was basic, but at that time of night, all I ... read more

The shirtless bus driver is having a blood feud with some guy right in the door of the bus, but you have to ignore this sort of thing. Greeks have blood feuds all the time and it doesn't stop them from cheerfully conducting business at the same time. Even if the tourists balk at entering the conversational blast radius, they will wave you in and take care of you with a smile just as they are inaugurating bitter hostilities with their own neighbors that will last a thousand years. I've seen this before. I approached a cab stand and saw two drivers in each other's faces with their veins purple and standing out on their proud faces. I considered walking on by and coming back later in order to avoid the ordeal I expected to follow. ... read more
