At 8 we meet a bus for the harbour of Rodos. Here we get on the 2 hour ferry to the Dodecanese island, Symi. First stop, for a look around is at Panormitis. Their museum here indicates the significance of their resistance to the Nazi regime during WW2. It's in a beautiful enclosed and protected harbour. We leave at midday for the main harbour of Symi in the north east of the island. This whole area is yachting heaven - and some mouth-watering craft sit in the harbour to watch. There are yachts going in all directions, to Turkey, along the coast and other islands. Coming home a German lady gives us her spare map of Symi which is fascinating. I would definitely want a GPS around here. The sun's direction as we leave the harbour ... read more

Today is really the first time we've come across a reliable internet connection. There is one in the hotel - but is quite expensive and down every time I go to use it. The hotel (Ialyssos Bay) is recently refurbished - completely rebuilt more like - is very modern and luxurious. It's a one minute walk to the beach, in case you can't stand fresh water such as in the waveless pool. The view out of our window is beautiful, looking north across to the Turkish mountains about 10km away. The temperature is superb and great for just padding around soaking up the atmosphere. The photos will have to wait until I can get back home and mount them here.... read more

Yasu (that's Greek for hello!) We've been trying to learn a little bit of greek here... of course like good Canadians the first word we learnt was thank you (ef-ka-risto!)... followed by other equally polite words! Speaking of which, we're starting to grow a little tired of how rude some Europeans can be, not to mention any specific countries that make pizza or anything. The Greeks are great, but you really appreciate how nice everyone is in Canada after a few weeks of being budded and pushed around! It's great to here everyone is doing good back home, thanks for the messages. And congrats mom and warren - go Riel Rebels! Today we went to Lindos, which is a small village famous for yet another Acropolis... can you tell it's Tamara writing?! Anyways, it was pretty ... read more

Yasu!! We hope everyone is doing well back home. We really miss everyone! We left Crete and arrived in the Island of Rhodes last night. We're staying at a big hotel by the beach. Today we went to see the Rhodes Acropolis, and although it is less impressive than the one in Athens, we liked it because you could walk around wherever you wanted and it had a really well preserved stadium. We walked around the "old town" and we're really impressed by the castle-like walls that surrounded it. We're (mostly me, not Alex) hoping to take in the beaches because they are supposed to be some of the best in Greece. We're wondering how everything is going at home... how is the landscaping going for the Browns? Rosslynd - have you finished Breaking Dawn? I ... read more

The Medieval town of Rhodes is located in the NE side of the island and is surrounded by a brick wall that use to protect the old city from the invaders. Now it is dedicated to commerce and tourism but the site is very interesting. The Medieval castle and the three windmills are the most important landmarks.... read more

Happy Birthday to Me! Thank you to all of you who sent me birthday wishes on Sunday! It’s been a pretty cool celebration for me this year since not only am I celebrating it with Kels in Greece, but we also had Reed and Sarah here visiting us for four days! They arrived last Tuesday and we had an awesome time! The afternoon they arrived Kelsey surprised me with CAESARS!!! Yup that’s right…Vodka, Clamato, Worcestershire, Tabasco, Celery Salt, Limes, and fresh celery…in Rhodes! Fantastic! Thanks to Tiff who brought everything from Canada last month! What a treat! That night we had dinner at Megan’s restaurant and I enjoyed my Caesars with a great Indian dinner. Then we had a few drinks in an “alley bar” in the old town of Rhodes, and then headed into the ... read more

Hi, One of the perks in this job is during our bye weeks we often take a three or four day trip to someplace in Europe that we haven’t been to before. The Aegean Air flight into Athens was a considerable improvement over my first venture to Greece. In 1964 I took a boat from Brindisi, Italy through the Adriatic to Patras and then a bus over a treacherous tiny two-lane highway with sheer cliffs an inch or so from the wheels of our over loaded and careening vehicle. One missed turn and we would plunge five hundred or so feet to our death. I assumed the driver had made the trip before and hoped that was the reason he was passing on blind curves in the middle of the night with only his parking lights ... read more
