NAXOS Naxos is a truly perfect Mediterranean island. Its a laid back and relaxing place with some of the best white sand beaches and clearest water we ve seen on our trip thus far. It has a lively port town (Chora) with fresh seafood restaurants and a storybook maze (no joke) of backalleys in the old town fit for exploring and shopping. Naxos also has an amazing mountainous interior with many hilltop villages, churches, and ancient sites. The interior of the island is also covered with vineyards, olive groves and citrus trees. Naxian wine is delicious, Naxian goat cheeses are first class, and home-cured olives and homemade olive oil are sold at almost every corner market. The island also has its own liquor - Kitron, which is apparently world famous...and tasty. (we went to the distillery ... read more

The journey continued as we left the luxury of Paros for the unknown on Naxos. The ferry terminals and rides are certainly something that can only be described as controlled chaos. If we thought the situation in Athens was just because of the big city, we were wrong as each port has its own sense of pandemonium (a stampeding cattle herd is an apt analogy). The kids continue to be amazing as the little geese follow their mother (or father - whoever happens to be in front) throughout the maze of humanity. We haven’t lost anyone or anything …… yet! You can tell that we are becoming more seasoned travelers (there is always that feeling as one reacclimatizes to the travel way) because we knew which bus we wanted to catch when we disembarked and ... read more

Stood in a large crowd to get on the Blue Star Naxos Ferry; it's nicer than the first two GA Ferries I took. Only 2 hrs. north from Santorini to Naxos; it's a fairly big island. Docked & was greeted by aggressive hotel/studio/pension reps. trying to get people into their places. Fortunately my ride for the Hotel Soula was there; I transported over w/ a family from Sweeden. Again, you don't get much for $13-3 bunk beds with enough extra room for a 4th & there would be no where to move, so small. And not only is it also a phone booth size shower, but there's no curtain! What are these people thinking? Bunked with 2 other pairs from Sweeden. For those interested-there are 9 million Sweedes; their president is Frederick something & their ... read more

"Where are you from?" "California." Laughter ensues..... This is a common conversation we have had here in Naxos, Greece. I guess people find humor in the fact that we are from California, land of bottle blondes and never ending beaches crowned with impossibly beautiful mansions..well at least that is their idea of it. Last night we were sitting near the port when two Norweigens, who were in the girl's words, "a wee bit drunk", came charging at us yelling "Callispera(Good night)". I think they were excited that they knew some words in Greek. They asked where we were from and when I answered the girl shrieked, "I LOVE THE O.C, THE O.C, THE O.C!". Oh shit I thought. That stupid show is what people think we are. I've seen the show once or twice and it ... read more

So I arrived 3 days ago in Greece first hitting Athens. The frist day I got here I had to wait for JT and Pete to arrive. It turns out they did not arrive till 1:00 am. But none the less I explored the streets of Athens and realized how old the stuff is all around. So the next day we headed for the main museum. They have lots and lots of statues there. Tell you the truth we got pretty bored pretty quick. The original plan was to hit the Parthanon later that day but it was pretty hot so we didn't JT and I hit all the other ruins within the area. Once again a change in plan. we wanted to go to the Parthanon in the morning but realized that the ferries left ... read more

To arrive in Naxos after such quiet was great. Its quite a big island with a very busy but not over crowded port; the water was still a reassuring emerald green. We had two nights in Hora (the port town) and one them was spent a a funky little open air cinema a short walk from our hotel. Saw a pretty average movie but it was bliss to be released from the usual dinner routine that by now is growing a little tiresome (i know you thought I'd never get sick of eating!). We explored the small old town of Naxos too, visiting the small archaeological museum that had some interesting artefacts found on the island. After Hora we decided to find a quiet beach so we rented our very small car and drove around ... read more

okay, this is Kelly Carr now speaking, we are trading off and on on the blogging. so, we left off meeting eddie "harmless eddie" in naxos. he asked if we were miki and we said yes and he took us off to hotel glaros, a room we had booked from one of our books just the day earlier. the port of naxos is small, not too many bars, very quiet island, and he took us pretty much in silence to hotel glaros because he was from albania and only spoke a little english. we arrived to the hotel arounnd 0100 and it was great, so much better than fivos!!!! it was so quaint and so clean. it was done like a seaside hotel with aquamarine colors and clean beds and a great bathroom and a ... read more

Hello all, As there has been only one response to my last entry (thanks auntie Rosemarrie) you probally won't care that I am still alive and have been cleared of any lung diseases or virus. Anyone would think I had the bird flew (hee hee, get the pun) or something. I now have many needle marks in my bum (sel calls it a pin cushion) but I feel much better. We have finally got to explore some of the islands today and enjoy some of the scenery. Tomorrow we head to Santorini for two days and we are looking forward to that as we will not be seeing mostly the walls of the hotel there. That was all. Teresa... read more
