Very quickly...after rome we decided to head out to Corfu (Greece) in order to escape another extremely hot (although beautiful) Italian city. Here we hoped to be able to have a beer on the beach, not walk up any stairs, and just relax. We accomplished our goals. After taking an overnight ferry from Brindisi (italy), we arrived at the famous pink palace at around 6am, tired and beat up. We then learned that breakfast and dinner were included in the price (not to mention 1 euro beers) and we suddenly became energized. In short, this place would never exist in America!! Anyway, we are heading back to brindisi now...hope to be able to update soon but will be back in the 619 on sunday. Good times!!... read more

Corfu! Well...not quite. Jeff and I went to the airport after spending our 2nd day in Athens. We arrived expecting to leave at 7pm on a 1 hour flight. Little did we know that Olympic Airlines had changed our flight and never told us. They randomly changed it to 11:45pm. And then on top of that, it was delayed until 12:45. We found out later that this is typical. Armed with our 6 euro meal voucher, Jeff and I found a table where we could plug in our computers and do some work. We got some airport food, and found a bottle of wine and settled in for our 6 hour delay! Well....3 bottles of wine later, we finally ended up on the plane and arrived in Corfu around 2am!!!! You all don't yet know why ... read more

Hey everyone. It seems like a long time since we have last written, but its only been a coupe days. We have access finally, so we thought that we would fill you in on the past couple of days. But first - thanks for all the comments guys, they have been great. Also, a Happy Father's Day to our Dads. OK, so.... we last left off on our saga when we were spending our last night in athens. The next day we headed out to catch our bus to corfu. So the website said that there was a 10am bus that left from terminal a. So we leave in enough time, with public transit, you alway have to leave time for delays you know. But we get to terminal a with one hour of lee way. ... read more

Well about 70 days in and still no beach, so we decided now is the time. We boarded a plane to Athens on our way to the Ionian island of Corfu to relax and hopefully not sunburn. Athens has lots to see but is overpriced and not the cleanest city so we only stayed the night. We were off to the island which supposedly was created by posiedon coming out of the water and cutting it away from the mainland with his trident. We arrive early at The Pink Palace, a resort for backpackers, offering cheap accomodation with free meals.(and as the name suggests everything is pink) We notice that the people who are checking out all look like they have not slept in a week and are all hungover. Maybe not exactly a place for peace ... read more

Although we were sad to be leaving Rome, Tamsin and I headed off to Bari by train to catch an overnight ferry to Corfu Island in Greece. Now, sleeping on the floor of a moving ferry is quite possibly the worst thing i've ever tried to do. The reason we slept on the floor is our Rail Passes allows us "free deck passage" which means exactly that, and the price to upgrade to a dorm room was a bit too high unfortunately. So after pretty much no sleep and very little food we arrive at the port in Corfu. Good news for us though was the hostel we had booked, The Pink Palace, arranged transfer from the port to the hostel for free which would've been quite difficult after virtually no sleep. After watching the ... read more

Hey all! Well, Andrea and I have finally made it to sunny beaches and at least relatively cheap prices. We're here on the Greek island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea and we couldn't be happier. We've been soaking up the sun and relaxing, which is nice because the last two months sometimes felt like a sight seeing/museum marathon. We think we'll be here in Corfu for about 8-9 days, I may finish my Open Water Diving training, but then we may just spend the whole time at the beaches. But for now, I'll get back to where I left off in my accounts of our travels and there will definitely be pictures. Let's see, where was I?... Italy Oh yeah, when we last left our intrepid travelers, they had just made it back to Paris ... read more

Well I've had a great day in Corfu. Last night went pretty late; all my fellow guests were very excited about the toga party that was happening. I was undecided about whether or not to go for a while, ended up going. At dinner I ended up at a whole table full of Canadians! There's a lot of us out here. More Canadians than Australians at this hostel actually, for once. Dinner comes with the price of admission; Greek salad, soup, and PASTA WITH LAMB. That's awesome! So I ended up in this big dark barroom, drinking with a bunch of other travellers, in a pink toga, dancing to such timeless hits as YMCA and Eye of the Tiger. It was kind of weird, and I made it to bed around two, though I've learned today ... read more

Well this morning I arrived at six in the am, off the overnight ferry from Ancona. Not much sleep, the only place you can is a room with "air seats"; basically similar to what you'd find on an airplane. Except there's people all over the floor, snoring loudly, with babies, etc. I'll have a nap this afternoon. The place at which I've arrived is called the Pink Palace and seems designed chiefly for partying; I'd planned to stay at an affiliated hostel called Corfu Backpackers which is actually down on the beach. I'm still going to look into that. It's really nice here-can't wait for the sun to come back out. Lush and green, and we're on the side of a mountain looking down at the Adriatic Sea. I'm off to hunt down some souvlaki if ... read more

Well the sun came out and I went and checked out Agios Gordios beach, waaaay down the hill. I've decided I do need sunscreen, but I'm not buying it at the hostel; they want about twenty three bucks for this tiny thing of spray sunscreen. The beach is awesome; not exactly golden white expanses of sand (it's a bit rocky in places etc) but the sand is very soft to lay down on, and the sunshine is nice and hot. The water is cold as hell though! I hope it's warmer further south in Crete. There are these huge rocky things jutting out of the sand that I've already climbed up on, and I've got all kinds of ideas of stuff I can do over the next two days; I can rent a kayak and explore ... read more

My previous blog looked forward to a leisurely cycle into Bari and a ferry to Corfu. It didn't quite turn out that way. Buouyed by finding a campsite 20 kms north of Brindisi, a sunny day and the prospect of a much cheaper ferry, I went for the 120 km ride and, porridged-up, made it, to find the camping book had lied and the campsite was shut, so a long, cheap day became longer (145 kms) and expensive, with a hotel in Brindisi and NO ferry the following day, so a train into Bari and the original ferry after all. Hmph. The extra day in Matera had been worth it, with a visit to a contemporary sculpture museum housed in one of the cave buildings and one or two cracking exhibits. So now Corfu. Not quite ... read more
