Wednesday 15th Arrived at Santorini, but no chance we will go ashore - no dock, ashore by tender. The island was formed by a volcanic eruption (the world’s largest ever) eons ago - the resultant tidal wave (estimated 200+ feet high) wiped out the Minoan civilization and is believed by some to have caused the disappearance of Atlantis In any event, the main town is situated on the top of the cliffs, accessible from the port only by cable car or by donkey up the zig-zag “road”. The houses are brilliant white-washed structures, some built right on the edge of the cliffs. An earthquake in 1956 caused a lot of damage on the island. Heaps of things to do on board so we weren’t bored by not going ashore. Thursday 16th Today’s port of call is ... read more

Location: Corfu Weather: Sunny, 33 °C Corfu is definitely somewhere I want to return to - this island is part of the Odyssey! The Paleokastrtsa Monastery was well worth the visit as it had some of the best icons I have seen - I have made a point of going into the Orthadox Churches while wandering around on my own as Mum said the icons in the churches are fantastic and she has not been wrong. I even brought a copy of the Mary icon as I thought it was so beautiful. Corfu has and had a very large English population and so cricket is played every Sunday in the town square - the only time I have seen cricket while in Greece. All the shops were open but again I was not in the mood ... read more

We’ve written our cruise blogs all at the same time on our last day at sea and we would like to end them on a nice note as our first 4 blogs are possibly more negative than positive and we are indeed having a great time. Cruising has been a learning experience for us and we have met some really nice people. We have to mention another Canadian couple we’ve hung out with quite a bit: Peter and Sheena. We’ve had great fun with them critiquing the ship’s entertainment and playing the silly games (what happens at Quest stays at Quest). One of our biggest laughs was the Love & Marriage show with 3 couples from the cruise playing the honeymoon game. It was hilarious. Hundreds of people now know some pretty good secrets about these ... read more

Saturday 4th July We are on our way to Bari today to catch the overnight ferry to Greece.... We have been told we can only take our day pack onto the boats and that our main lugguage will remain locked within the bus on shore so to make sure our valuables are with us.... eeep! I only have a TINY day pack so end up having to take a massive plastic bag as well.. sigh!! We leave Rome around 9,45am and the bus trip is for the whole day - everyone is sick of the bus by now!! Today we got the 10 new passengers to get up and on the mike to instroduce themselves, most of them are Australian as is about 75% of the group. We arrive in Bari early about 4.30pm and our ... read more

OBAMA WON YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok. Just had to get that out of my system, but I am so happy! I took a little nap last night then headed over to the students' apartment that has a working tv at 4 am to watch the results come in. Everyone was already there and pumped. So even in this far off country, a few U.S. kids managed to do a little victory dance (and lots of yelling) in honor of this momentous occasion. In other news, I just got back from my fall break which lasted from Oct. 23 to Nov. 2. It was amazing. Claire (my travel buddy) and I left on Thursday evening at 5. We took an overnight train to Venice which arrived around 8 am the next day. We spent Friday wandering around Venice. I ... read more

For Fall Break my roommate Allison and I decided to take the week and go to Greece. It was an absolutley amazing time and incredibly relaxing. The first part of break we were on the island of Corfu, where it was sunny and in the 80s the entire time we were there. We stayed at the Pink Palace, which is this huge hostel where everything truly is pink and upon arrival you get a shot of ouzu that's died pink. It was crazy. There was also a pink toga party our first night there, which was fun and included traditional greek dancing, an ouzu circle where everyone took a shot of ouzu and then had a plate smashed on their head. Surprisingly that didn't hurt much at all. We also went on a booze cruise where ... read more

So we ended up taking a bit of a detour from our original plan... we have just returned from 4 fantastic days in Corfu! Originally we had planned to skip Greece and just head back up from Naples to Rimini, but our friends managed to coerce us into it. We took an overnight ferry from Bari to Igoumentisa. It was... interesting. Our Eurail passes guaranteed us free passage but not a cabin, or a seat, or even a place indoors. We lucked out and found a hidden floor spot where we slept undisturbed. We arrived the next morning and took another ferry to Corfu where we were staying at the legendary Pink Palace. The building is pink! It is also situated on a hill just a 5 minute walk from the beach. As it is the ... read more

I was sooo happy to get out of Cairo! Yay! For all of you thinking of traveling to Egypt--2 days in Cairo is more than enough. 6 is overkill. I met the rest of my family in Venice to begin our family vacation! Woohoo! We stayed in a hotel that was on an island in Venice. For those of you who have not been to Venice, you may not realize that this is redundant because Venice is made up of a bunch of islands! Apparently I did not pay attention in social studies class that closely--or to movies. I thought that there might be a little stream that ran through Venice where all the gondoliers frequented--alas NO! It's all islands. Hmm. My mom bought a $12 coke light -- not the cheapest hotel! The cruise itself ... read more
