Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland April 28th 2010

We've reached the end of our journey in Auckland, NZ! We arrived in Auckland at 8:25pm local time (6:25pm Aus time, so we still had tons of energy) and caught a shuttle bus from the airport to our hostel. The airport is quite a way out of Auckland city (about 20km) so it was a bit pricey, unfortunately. Our accomodations were lovely however, and for the second time this trip we found ourselves upgraded from a dorm room to a private room! We went out and bought some groceries and made a very late dinner. The next day we dedicated to sightseeing in Auckland. We went to Viaduct Harbour and walked along the marina where numerous yachts, sailboats and racing boats are moored. The area is very pretty and there are lots of shops and restaurants ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns April 24th 2010

We have arrived at our last Australia destination on this trip, and can't believe how quickly time has passed. We arrived in Cairns after a short 2-hour trip on the Greyhound. Unfortunately our last bus trip wasn't without drama, because our bus driver was totally insane. He spent almost half an hour lecturing passengers on all the things they can't do on the bus, threatening horrible fines and expulsion from the bus. We breathed a sigh of relief when he was done, but about an hour in he went on the loudspeaker to berate a girl for putting her feet in the aisle, and when she didn't move her feet he pulled the whole bus over, walked to the back and yelled at her while everyone else looked on. We did make it to Cairns, however, ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Mission Beach April 22nd 2010

Hellooooo everyone! So this is an update from our time at Mission Beach, and by the title I'm sure you can guess it was an exciting couple of days. We bussed up from Magnetic Island and arrived in Mission Beach about 4 hours later. As a side note, we ate the most delicious pies at a truck stop in the middle of nowhere! Mission Beach is a very small town that is currently putting itself on the map as a tourist destination by offering cheap whitewater rafting and skydiving. It also boasts excellent hostels with high reviews. We chose Scottys and weren't disappointed. On our first night we ate at a proper restaurant, which was a nice treat. There were candles on the table, nice views from the patio, and thankfully $10 pizza specials. Then we ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Magnetic Island April 20th 2010

Hello to anyone still reading along! Our latest update is from Magnetic Island, just off the coast of Townsville. We bussed up from Airlie Beach, thankfully a short ride, and caught the ferry across to the island (called Maggie by locals). As soon as we sat down on the ferry the skies open and rain poured down like it was the end of the world... we were happy to be undercover! As our 20 minute voyage continued, it was rather choppy and we narrowly missed being soaked by ocean water, but we arrived successfully to sun! We took the city bus to our hostel, Base, and checked in after a long wait at reception (apparently the locals are all on Island Time). The hostel was quite impressive. It had mixed reviews online, mostly due to the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach April 16th 2010

Hello from the famous Whitsundays! We are currently in the little town of Airlie Beach, gateway to the group of islands known as the Whitsundays. We are very much in the tropical north now, complete with unpredictable weather, humidity and tropical heat. It's beautiful here! The city relies on a tourist-based economy and the main street is lined with hostels, pubs, restaurants and touristy shops. There is a man-made "Lagoon" with beaches and grassy areas for the public to swim, since the waters around here are frequented by "stingers" (jellyfish) at this time of year. Also, Airlie's waterfront is mostly a giant marina which houses hundreds of privately owned and tourist boats for sailing among the islands. We arrived after the endless overnighter bus ordeal around 8am. It was warm and sunny, but the reception at ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Agnes Water April 15th 2010

G'day mates! A quick update on our last few days in Town of 1770/Agnes Water! These two towns are really small and right next to each other, and are the northernmost surf beaches in Australia. Further north from here, the reef begins and waves don't reach the land like they do further south! We took the bus up from Hervey Bay and arrived around dinnertime in the tiny town of Agnes Water. We got to our hostel, Cool Bananas, and checked in, got some dinner, relaxed. The hostel was great because it had a huge, airy common room where DVDs were always playing. This turned out to be fortunate since we awoke the next morning to rain, and lots of it. We had intended to spend the day at a surf lesson offered by the local ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Fraser Island April 11th 2010

Hey gang! we have just returned from 3 days and two nights on the fabulous Fraser Island where we saw: Dolphins! Stingrays! Dingos! Goannas! Insects including but not limited to spiders, beetles, ants and mosquitos! So yeah it was a pretty great trip! After our last blog entry we took the bus north once more to Hervey Bay (pronounced HARVEY bay just to confuse tourists). We were pleasantly surprised to find that Hervey Bay is more than just a jumping off point to Fraser Island, it is actually quite beautiful. Huge pristine beach, nearly deserted! We stayed in a tiny hostel called Friendly Hostel which was very friendly... more like a little B&B than a hostel. We got a private room with a big double bed, which is a real treat after dorm rooms. So when ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Brisbane April 7th 2010

Hey guys! okay a brief Aussie/Canadian translation: Canada: Loose = slutty Australia: Loose = drunk Aren't cultural differences fun? So here is an update on our travels, specifically our time in Brisbane! We left surfers paradise... late. Our greyhound showed up an hour late, but luckily we arrived in brisbane and were able to meet up with our friend Jonno. We met Jonno in Greece on our 2008 eurotrip and have kept in touch, so we were lucky enough to have somewhere to stay when we came to Brisbane. He picked us up and took us to his amazing house in one of the suburbs, Newmarket. The house is unreal.... the entire back wall opens up onto a balcony, with surround sound speakers in the ceiling. I couldn't possibly describe it well enough, we'll show you ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Surfers Paradise April 2nd 2010

Hey guys, how ya goin? We're in Surfers Paradise at the moment and here's what we've been up to! After our last blog we still had some time in Byron Bay! We did another "workshop" with the crazy bushman Cockatoo Paul, and he showed us all sorts of important Australian survival techniques and crafts! We learned how to make dunny paper (ie toilet paper) out of a certain type of tree bark (hence the name of our blog) and we made bracelets and anklets out of palm fronds. They turned out quite well! We DID end up going to the questionable Cheeky Monkey's mentioned in our last entry... it was all that we expected and more! It was like the stereotypical spring break in Cancun complete with funny contests with contests stripping down for a $50 ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Coffs Harbour March 30th 2010

Hey guys! We're writing to you today from Byron Bay, NSW! We've been here a day now, and before that we were in Coffs Harbour, so here's what we've been up to: We left Sydney shortly after posting our last blog and took an overnighter bus up the coast to Coffs Harbour. We got on at 11pm and arrived at 7am.... I had been dreading the overnighter bus, but to be honest it wasnt as awful as I had anticipated. For one thing, it wasn't full so we both got two seats to lay down on, and for another thing, I actualy managed to get a few hours of sleep! success! So we arrived bright and early in Coffs and were pleasantly surprised to see a shuttle from our hostel, the Aussitel Backpackers, waiting to pick ... read more
