Hello everyone, from Sydney, Australia! We've been here for 4 days and it's been amazing! Time to catch you all up on what we've been up to since we left Vancouver. Our flights here were excellent. Air New Zealand doesn't skimp on the leg room and the food was actually edible. Also the flight wasn't full, and we had an empty seat next to us... WIN! I managed to catch a little sleep (3 patchy hours) but TJ wasn't so lucky. We arrived at 830am local time in Sydney and immediately felt comfortable here. It's very much a tourism-based economy and tourists are treated well. We easily found an affordable shuttle to take us from the airport to our hostel, Wake Up Sydney. Thanks to pete/andrew/chelsea for the recommendation, it is excellent! We took a much-needed ... read more

Hello everyone, and welcome to the 2010 edition of Teija and TJ's travel blog! It's been over a year since our Eurotrip ended, and we are excited to be embarking on our next big trip in only 5 days, this time to Australia and New Zealand! We are flying with Air New Zealand from YVR to Sydney via Auckland (a very short stopover). From Sydney we will travel up the coast by Greyhound bus, stopping at Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay, Surfers Paradise, Brisbane, Noosa, Hervey Bay, Fraser Island, Town of 1770, Airlie Beach, Magnetic Island and Mission Beach (and probably a few others). We finish our coastal trek in Cairns, located in northern Queensland, where we will catch a plane to Auckland, New Zealand. The NZ portion of our trip is a bonus created from flight ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin November 29th 2008

Okay, so first we'll answer the obvious question: why are we in Berlin for 6 days after racing around the rest of the continent? Because we can! Seriously, our intent was to spend 4 nights here and then move onto Hamburg for another 2. However, there is some sort of conference being held in Hamburg and every hostel was fully booked more than a week in advance. Thus, we opted to spend the rest of our trip in beautiful Berlin, and luckily there has been more than enough to do here. On our first full day here, we joined up with the free walking tour for an overview of the city and its history. We went with the same tour group that took us around in Munich and Paris, and again it was excellent. Highlights included ... read more

Alright so back to the east for us! We departed Dresden and headed 2 hours south-ish to Prague, Czech Republic. We had heard really good things about the city and were excited to Czech it out.... seriously tj made me do this. Anyway, we arrived at our hostel, Sir Tobys, and quickly discovered that it was the best hostel we had stayed in on our entire trip. The rooms were clean, they served delicious cheap meals, and the staff were nice. Plus, the people staying there were incredibly cool. We spent our first day exploring the old town. We wandered around a cute outdoor market, dodging overly eager shop owners and buying souvenirs for people back home. We saw the Astronomical Clock in the Old Town Squre. Luckily we had been pre-warned that it is the ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich November 21st 2008

Guten tag! We arrived in Munich about a month and a half too late to experience the infamous and legendary Oktoberfest, but we managed to have an amazing time regardless. We arrived from Salzburg after a pleasantly short train journey north. We stayed at the Euro Youth Hostel which was recommended to us by Chelsea and Peter (thanks guys!) It was fantastic! On our first day, we checked in and grabbed some food, and then joined up with the free walking tour offered by the same company as the one we went on in Paris. The tour took us around the heart of Munich and gave a good, accurate overview of the historical events that took place in the area. It was particularly interesting because TJ and Teija have both studied WWII history extensively, and the ... read more

Greetings loyal readers! We have arrived back in the West, in Austria to be exact. We travelled three hours from Budapest to Vienna where we spent 3 very enjoyable days. We arrived at our hostel, the famous Wombats Lounge, after walking only one block from the train station (best case scenario for backpackers!). We set out immediately to explore the city, walking along the main shopping street (similar to Robson) to the Old Town. As we walked along, we noticed a poster for Quantum of Solace, the new Bond movie! Moments later we noticed that it was playing at the ENGLISH movie theater! It was fate! We purchased tickets for a few hours later and continued on. We visited St. Stephens cathedral which is in the heart of Vienna's old town. It is a beautiful old ... read more

Hello from Hungary! We have just spent 4 fabulous days in Budapest and are sad to be leaving. We arrived after a lonnnnnnnnng 10-hour train ride from Sighisoara, and after temporarily getting lost we arrived at our really nice hostel. After ditching our stuff in our room, we went out right away to explore. We walked around and saw the citadella and castle hill lit up at night, as well as the chain bridge and Independence bridge that connect Buda to Pest. The next morning we walked from Pest, where our hostel was, over to Buda and climbed to the top of the Citadella. At the top there are some sweet views and the remains of an old fortress that was particularly significant in WWII under the seige of Budapest. We went inside and visited the ... read more

Europe » Romania » Transilvania » Mures » Sighisoara November 6th 2008

Okay so the last time we talked we were about to head to Romania on an overnight train. We boarded the train in Belgrade, only to be told by the conductor that there was an error with our ticket we had purchased the day before. We went to the desk and sorted it out. It turns out the error was that the date had been written as 1.11.08 instead of 11.1.08. Seriously. Big f**king deal. With that fixed we boarded the train and our compartment was next to two Aussie girls we had befriended back at our hostel. It is important to note that this train was sketchy..... the seats were gross, the washroom was grosser (the toilet flushed right onto the tracks, which amused TJ endlessly) and the lights were dim. As soon as we ... read more

After Slovenia, we headed south to Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia. In the three hour train ride, the temperature outside rose almost 10 degrees, so we arrived to a hot, sunny day. After checking into our hostel, we took a quick wander around the old town. Since we arrived late, it was already dark, but the big old church near our hostel was lit up and quite spectacular. We stopped at a little restaurant that served Italian food and ate outdoors. Zagreb has a real coffee shop culture, where at all times of the day and night people can be found sitting outdoors on the patios of little cafes, sipping coffee and beer and socializing. After dinner we found an empty couch and joined the locals. TJ sampled the local beers and Teija enjoyed some ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Upper Carniola » Bled October 28th 2008

Greetings from Slovenia! We have just spent four days here: two in Ljubljana and two in Bled. We arrived in Ljubljana in the early evening after our time in Villach and found our hostel without incident. The hostel was really cute, with only 14 beds and a very intimate, friendly feel. It was already dark, but we decided to wander down to the river and see what there was to see. It turns out the river is the place to be in the early evening, because the restaurants lining it all lit up their patios with candles and they were all packed with locals. We crossed the landmark Triple Bridge and found a cute cafe for a glass of wine/beer. The next morning we got up early and walked back to the bridge to get some ... read more
