I went to the Archeological Museum of Iraklio today. Yes, I saw yet again more pots, vessels, vases, urns and other clay containers. I've seen enough for a while. The museum was fine, well laid out and easy to follow, with English descriptions to all items. They did have a couple of famous items: the King Minos golden ring and the Minoan bulls head figurine. But lot's of clay pots. And now for something completely different I went to the Aquarium. It's 15 km out of town so I had to figure out the long distance buses. All fish a few invertebrates. They say it's the largest aquarium in the Eastern Mediterranean, but it seemed not too big. No Cetaceans, but perhaps that's ok, there isn't enough room for any big sea mammals. There was video ... read more

Today I saw what life was like for the ancient Minoans, never mind the Cretans. I went to the Palace of Knossos today. There is a public bus that runs from the main station to Knossos about 5km out of town. Definitely for the tourists because it's the only bus that uses Latin characters to say which bus it is, all other use Greeks characters. Knossos is a tight community of only a few acres. Some parts have been completely restored and repainted. There were so many people there, and a whole community of shops and restaurants outside the complex living off the avails of tourism. I walked around the place for about an hour. It was well described, I didn't need a guide. Of course, I was approached at the entrance by self appointed guides ... read more

Worth the Wander After the last entry, you may be wondering what possessed us to go creeping along the winding, collapsing mountain roads of Crete. Brother Mark and I were looking for a small beach town on the Southwest coast called Sougia because it was the closest thing we could identify near Lissos. Lissos is an ancient site that's played host to a number of civilizations. The odd thing about Lissos is that, while it's marked on lots of maps (usually with a cartoon symbol that's supposed to suggest ancient ruins), there's almost no information about it anywhere and there's no road to it. That's going to peak my interest; but how to get there? We had a plan for trekking across Crete. Before you point out that Ernest Shackleton had a plan for trekking across ... read more

6/16 - 6/29 We left Mykonos and took a 4 hour speedferry, followed by a 3 hour bus ride to visit my sisters town of Chania, Crete. I have had the good fortune of getting to visit my two sisters in their beautiful beach laden island every few years, but I was most excited to bring Jaime, and have her spend time with my family in Greece. One of my sisters, Tara, was kind enough to move her family over to her mother-in-laws house a few blocks away, and give Jaime and I their apartment for our use. Moving out in order to make us feel at home, was the first of many gestures of genuine hospitality, and Jaime and I were made to feel quite comfortable with my family for the duration of our two ... read more

Sir, your goats are blocking the road My first visit to Crete was via Olympic Air from Athens on a vintage de Havilland aircraft, possibly a variant of the DH.141 Heron circa 1950, possibly the real thing. Either way, there was a certain Indiana Jones flight out of Cairo feel to it. I wondered at the time if a bright red line could be seen tracing our route on the surface of the Mediterranean below. Also, from my vantage point directly behind the pilot, I could clearly see the notice on the pilot’s screen that the navigation software license had expired in 1984. No worries, how far could Crete have moved in twelve or thirteen years? Before going any further, I want to make it clear just how much I enjoyed Crete, because sometimes it may ... read more

We have been having a pretty amazing time, sorry we haven't been adding to this very often...it costs money and it is not always available. Egypt and the Nile was a blast. We spent some time in Alexandria and Ed was able to take photos of the area where his parents had lived. I think that his Mum will see lots of changes. Alexandria was beautiful as long as you stayed on the seafront. Our trip on an overnight train to Luxor revealed the true poverty of the place. Farms with no signs of modern technology apart from tv satellite dishes and men riding donkeys or camels using their mobile phones. The cruise on the Nile was stunning. 4 nights on an aging beauty named the Nile Ritz. Generally good company and masses of food. We ... read more

Ok. I'm actually writing this entry the same day as my previous one regarding Rethymno but I figure the last one is lot to read and most won't have read it in entirety to appreciate the humour. We're now in Iraklio/Heraklion which is the biggest city in Crete. We took the bus this morning from Rethymno, dropped off our stuff at our hotel and took the bus to Knossos. I suppose it was a good thing that Knossos is the most famous archaeological site in Iraklio so they actually have a specific bus route that goes (for cheap) to Knossos. The Con - every tour group also goes there. We got there and we were surrounded by swarms of tour groups. That wasn't a big deal as we had our nifty letter from the Ministry of ... read more

We flew to the island of Crete from Athens. We figured flying was an easier and faster option for our needs than taking a 9 hour ferry ride. We took Aegean airlines which I thought was a discount airline as we only paid 20 euros + taxes for the flight. For the 40 minute flight we were offered a mint, tasty caramel cookie and our choice of non-alcoholic drink. The island of Crete is fairly large and the some of its landscape includes highways and ugly concrete buildings. Its a bit of a contrast to one of the smaller islands near Athens I visited the last time around that was whitewashed and donkeys replaced vehicles. Janice and I fled this ugly port town of Iraklio/Heraklion and headed west to the 3rd largest town in Crete called ... read more

March 31st, 2006, Day 85 of our cruise of 105 Iraklion, Crete, not our favorite Greek Island We rented a van today for 8 people and toured the island and the town. So we did not….”We will walk to town tomorrow, hopefully tour the archeological museum and maybe go for a cab ride around wine country in the afternoon.” I saw no museum, maybe tomorrow in Athens. We drove to a picturesque fishing village, the birth place of Saint -Nicholas, then up the coast to a beach resort; we then swerved inland to the wine and olive country, had a lovely Greek lunch with a pitcher of Retsina* for moi( and I was navigating!). On our way back, we stopped at Knossos Palace, which is a controversial ruin, not restored, but renovated; it was closed(tourist season ... read more

Here we are just arrived in Crete. It's early morning and about to be a scorching day. Left Manchester at 7.30 and it was raining. It's good to see the sun again.Had an excellent journey with Monarch Airways and left on time. The usual things applied to the flight and I suppose we all take the cramped conditions as part and parcel of modern travel.Never the less the in-flight meal was acceptable if not digestable and consisted of sausage, scrambled egg tomato and tea .After some effort that would have done credit to a trained contortionist the meal was dispatched and before we knew it the stewardess was dispensing lots of expensive drinks gifts and perfumes. I of course politely declined all offers We arrived in Crete a little earlier than I anticipated. Today we decided to explore a ... read more
