Through Fervent Seas Peering through the dark, ravished from a night on a bench with the soft vibrations of the ship’s engines, I saw Crete. My eyes shuttered. They wanted rest, to evaporate from the world surrounding and return to the forgotten lands where dreams relate to one another on a gossamer thread. But my mind; it singed my lashes and brows with the ferocity of ancient fable. Crete. I heard so much. I had a conscious tale of the Cretan in my mind. Who was he? Where did he come from? Half passed five o’clock in the morning, the land was dark except for sparsely dotted housings emitting a constellation of pulsing lights. I saw the tracers of headlights, darting through the thin brush like fireflies. I smelled the sea air of maritime travel, now ... read more

We have updated this blog so read it Flying out of Paris was an experience all to itself. Firstly trying to find the Peugeot drop of point was a mission after about half an hour exploring Charles de Gore we luckily stumbled upon it. Ironically it was the parking lot full of Peugeot's. Go figure. Luckily the speed camera fine had not been issued yet so we might get of that one !!! Arriving into Athens was quite upsetting, knowing that the last part of our journey was about to begin and only having two months island hopping around the Greek islands ahead of us. The city of Athens is ugly apart from the ancient ruins. Tourist souvenir shops line every alleyway. People constantly approaching you trying to sell you well something. Pirated DVDs, sunglasses ... read more

Todays blog is going to be quite different from the usual travel updates as it summarises my trip and experience in visiting the battlefields and war cemetaries of the Battle of Crete. It will involve a bit of a historical context to begin with and will probably be quite long, so perhaps you could find time to read it later. I think I will start with explaining just what went on during the battle, as it is an inspiring story that I think all New Zealanders should be aware of and pay their respects to. First the historical context. In April 1941 the Germans were on a roll and had invaded Greece and their battle-hardened and superbly equipped army pushed a much inferior Allied force, including the NZ Division, out of mainland Greece. The survivors withdrew ... read more

This is a bit dated since we are now in Prague and have also spent several days in Germany. We have had some difficulty finding Internet Cafes once we arrived in the Czech Republic. Our time in Crete went well. We had 2 major destinations there - Chania and the Samaria Gorge. Chania is the second largest city on Crete and is located in the northwest of the island. It is a typical island town with beautiful views, waterfront tavernas, lots of alley shops, and nice views of the sea. They had recently restored their lighthouse which took several years and went way over budget. In the end it cost them over 1,000,000 dollars. Chania, pronounced Hania, was a good base for our hike in the Samaria Gorge. It was a 2 hour drive to the ... read more

On Sunday night I arrived in Heraklion (capital of Crete) on the fast ferry from Santorini. With Jane heading back to the UK yesterday I am cutting my own track through Crete for four days, spending one day in Heraklion and 3 days in Hania, on the western side of the island. From what I have seen so far I think that I like Crete better than anywhere I have been yet, even magnificent Sanotrini. The difference is in the friendly people and the way they say hello to you in the street without the expectation that you will dine in their Taverna or buy their goods. There isn't the desperation to milk tourist dollars like in the greek islands or the in your face rudeness of Athens. Then there is Crete itself, which is a ... read more

We berthed at the port of Iraklion and all 6 of us (plus driver makes 7) squeezed into a Skoda taxi with all our luggage contained in the giant sized luggage compartment. We hired a car from the recommended Motor Club rental operation, one of the larger privately owned operators with a fleet of 450 vehicles. I had a good chat with the GM about our business and his. Not surprisingly we hired a (new) Skoda for the week, with ample space for our needs. We headed straight for Agio Nicholas (Father Christmas) which is about 65km South, South East on the coast, arriving at 10pm and, with some advice from the parking attendant, located a hotel for the night. On arrival we encountered the Cretian equivalent of Bazil Faulty, sitting on a chair outside his ... read more

Crete is the best yet other then corfu ofcourse. We got of the ferry at like 9 and went right to a jeep rental place and rented a 5 speed vitara it was sweet rippin around the sides of the mountains with no guardrails good times. Right off the hop we went south across the island just checking shit out and got some info and gas and shit, then carried on to the haunted castle in frankostella or something like that lol. Pretty wild to this castle that was around 3000BC and the beach that it was on was so beatiful, it came out to this point and then back in and went for miles so nice. We both went for a nice swim then carried on rippin towards chania to go and see the samahria ... read more

Well the greek islands are definitely worth checking out. whether u like to party or relax on a beach they all kick ass. So after Corfu me and Jordan headed to Ios not really expecting a full blown party town but thats what we got. We managed to take it easy. For the most part. So many crazy little clubs for such a tiny town on a tiny island. They were all packed with Italians, well the odd aussie or spainyard but mostly italians. So talking to girls proved to be difficult. Chow bella is about as far as any conversation got, LOL. But the clubs were tiny and packed like a sardeen can. Not my bag of chips. I need some leg room. We showed up in Ios with absolutely nowhere to stay and lucked ... read more

Today I don't have much to add because there was a weather related change to my plans. I am staying another day in Hania, and I had planned to take a boat cruise to the nearby islands. This boat has a glass bottom, and perhaps as they advertised, we would have seen some Aegean Sea fish, turtles, rocks, arthropods etc. But it is very windy and all small boats are staying dockside. The waves are crashing against the breakwater and lighthouse. It's quite dramatic and worth a couple of photographs. There are even some clouds developing up against the mountains behind us. So all I can do is sit and watch the weather. The Greeks are very friendly people, they work so hard to make us tourists feel welcome. And it never feels disingenous. Sure there ... read more

I hiked the Samaria Gorge yesterday. The day was very long and tiring: we left at 6:15 pm to drive to the entrance. We started the trek at 7:50 am. At 1000m elevation and at that time in the morning you can imagine it was the coolest I've felt in more than two weeks. But still in short sleeves, so not freezing, remember, this is Crete. The Samaria Gorge is reported to be Europe's longest. It was a beautiful hike. The beginning was a series of steps for a couple of kilometers until we got to the stream. Then the walk along near the stram level. The entire hike is 16 km, and descends 1000 m down to sea level at the town on the Libyan Sea on the south side of the island. The hike ... read more
