A fantastic holiday to Crete which for me, was a return visit. I'd previously been at the end of September and so felt it proper to come in the height of summer. Taking an apartment in a tourist complex, we did manage to keep ourselves very much isolated but also managed to visit such sights as the Palace at Knossos, the Lasithi Plateau with the Caves, the villages around Agios Nikolaos and Iraklion. All in all, another wonderful holiday, improved by the fact that the Athens Olympics were taking place and Crete was pretty much deserted!... read more

Slipping down the Gorge When I first thought of this trip, the presupposition went something like: "Hey, I reckon I could get from Blighty to Oz without ever seeing an airport". Less than 2 weeks in and I have taken three flights. Bollocks to that idea then. Currently in Crete, caught up with The Folks, Sim, X and little Niamh who were taking in a week here. That was a nice thing all round and it was all possible thanks to the marvel that is SMS. Package tour land here. The Greeks are all very congenial except, for some reason, the people at the information desks at bus stations who can all fuck off. Legs, feet and arse are still in pain after walking down the Samarian Gorge (see fab pics of well-nice scenery). The blister ... read more

My task was to organise 8 girls together on holiday!!! Luckily it wasn’t a hard task at all because everyone knew each other and got on really well!!! We stayed at the Aloi Hotel which was stunning! Our rooms were nice and clean and had loads of room. First day was soooooooooo hot outside!!! We all went to the poolside to do a bit of bathing and of course the sleepyheads (Vicks & Dania) were the last to get up! We then walked over to the beach which was about a 20 minute walk and decided to eat some lunch at a nearby restaurant! On the way back to our hotel, we (except Dania & Renee) booked a trip to the Samaria Gorge at a nearby travel office then walked back to our hotel to have ... read more

I'm not really sure how or why but the CD was in Lauren's back pack. Information does exist!!! only it's called the tourist police. we are finding out that transportation in Greece is very expensive because they don't take our eurail passes on the ferries. Crete is nice. We saw the ruins of Knosos Palace today and we are going to hike down the summarian gorge tomorrow. After that we are off to Santorini.... read more

Heading to Crete, an island south of Greece. This is where the travel bug cornered me and attacked. I haven't been able to get rid of it, not that I want to - the beaches, the culture, the people, the food, it was all breathtaking. Spent one month on that heavenly island, and thought it was the most beautiful place on earth. Since then, I have travelled some other places, and realized that everywhere I go is more beautiful than the last, every place I visit I fall in love with, even this tiny town. Planned that trip on my own, and financed most of it. I set my mind to it, did it, and never looked back. Can I spend the rest of my life like that? I don't know, I'm considering doing my schooling ... read more

We got up late today. Greek people have a different sense of time. They have a kind of siesta at 2pm when most of the shops close. They eat dinner very, very late. 9.30pm is peak hour in town. By then, all the little kids are up playing in the park and, a little later, all the older mums and dads are dining out in the inumerable restaurants that dominate the towns. We are slowly getting into synch with this way of life, so we were up walking the wall of the old venetian harbour till after 1am last night - hence the late rising. We were feeling a little touched by the sun after lounging by the beach yesterday so we decided to head to the cool of the mountains today. It was a great ... read more

As I was walking along, checking out the Minoan ruins and looking for the restaurant featured in our travel guide, Adonis accosted me. That was his name. Really. He looked a little like a middle aged Paul Newman - all blue eyes and charm. He gave me some flowers and told me that they are native to Crete. He said that every spring, all over Crete, people wait for the flowering of their special flower which makes all the streets smell so sweet. I've since discovered that they are a type of Daphne (Daphne sericea for the scientists). What a lovely way to be welcomed to Chania (pronounced Hahnia), one of the largest cities in Crete. When we arrived, we weren't so sure. The ferry got into port after 8pm and after walking around with heavy ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is first and only post I'll do about a trip to Greece from August 22 to September 4, 1997 that I did together with my parents, my uncle Anders and my grandmother Evy. During our stay on Crete we lived in a beautiful apartment in the picturesque little village of Platanias. It's a quiet little hamlet with only a few thousand inhabitants but despite it's small stature though there is no shortage of pleasurable ways to spend your time here. There's a plethora of wonderful restaurants with really good Greek cuisine. For our first few days we took it easy, spending much on the beach near our apartment. One evening our hotel arranged a very nice show with both local dancers, performing traditional dances, as well as our own travel guides ... read more

And the crowd goes wild...oh, well, not exactly wild, the drunken crowd is giving a polite applause after our performance. But we buy it. Our version of ”Hotel California” would probably never have made the lists anyway…Any lists. Ever. I got the feeling we weren’t very synchronized. A feeling that was confirmed afterwards by my friend saying: ”Hey, did you notice in the ceiling? They had a TV screen with the song text. I saw it halfway through the song. Cool.”. The secret concept of karaoke has been revealed. The world will never be the same again. ... read more
