Thursday, 18th December, 2008 We had another very slow start to the day and both read for most of the morning. The weather was very grey and overcast and rained much later in the day. It is still confusing, because it is still so warm though. We made a move to the town at two forty five. Our plan was to visit The Gecko Bar and update the blog. The bar was very welcoming and we chatted about our travels and so on. A group a people came in celebrating a 40th birthday, and we left about five o'clock. Pat heated up the bolognaise and cooked some pasta, followed by some fruit. Friday, 19th December, 2008. The weather was again really nice and we both read and sunbathed in the earlier part of the day. Pat ... read more

Wednesday, 10th December, 2008 Another peaceful night, with a good night's sleep. We weren't up too early and sorted out our Christmas email picture. Eventually we left the villa about twelve thirty and headed for Ag Nick. We bumped into Bob the electrician on the way out and stood talking with him for a while. He was telling us all about the utility costs and how things work in Crete, very interesting for us. We parked on the back road we knew from our time being at the Hotel. The Tourist office was shut with a sign saying it would be closed due to the strike. We decided on some lunch and ended up at the restaurant La Casa, which is alongside the sea water lake. We had a kleftika and mixed grill, with a Greek ... read more

Sunday, 14th December, 2008. Another slow start to the day. We phoned my Mum and Dad and Pat's Mum, the weather at home is gloomy. Nothing else particularly to report. We had our usual snack lunch. We went for a walk at two and headed for the Harbour area we hadn't got to last week. We took a look at the new housing development built just a little way along. A lot of the houses seem finished on the outside, they have individual - small - swimming pools and BBQ's built in. The weather was pleasant and I was wearing T-Shirt and shorts. The harbour area leads round to a headland overlooking the next beach and the remains of a Roman villa on the top of the headland. We walked back through the town and did ... read more

Saturday, 6th December, 2008 continued We walked into town at ten thirty, the sun was shining and it was really warm. The cafe Du Lac, advertised free wifi, so we had a coffee and logged in. I updated the blog and checked our emails. The accommodation in Makrigialos that was available, looked really nice from the owners direct website, and we were fairly sure that this was going to the place for us. We then had a walk around the town, picked up a better Crete map, and raided the cash machines. Then back up to the hotel. The drive to Makrigialos was about an hour and we left about around twelve thirty to give ourselves plenty of time and do some sightseeing on the way. Crete is much bigger than Kefalonia, where we have just ... read more

Thursday continued We sat around in the public areas, had another Gin & Tonic and diet coke. The self service restaurant opened at eight and we went through at quarter past. A pork steak and chicken fillet both with chips and a piece of chocolate cake for dessert, €22.00. We finished eating, but had sat right next to a window looking out onto the quayside, so we lingered, in the hope of the ship sailing shortly. She went bang on time and we went back to the cabin shortly afterwards. A much longer time than we would have expected to spend on the Knossos palace and in the port of Piraeus, but to be truthful, we have no schedule and in the long run it really doesn't matter at all. All part of this wonderful adventure. ... read more

Day 20 Samaria Gorge Both of us bright and early this morning. We were more or less sure of our route to the Gorge, left at 7 am and arrived at 2 hours later. I was a little nervous about this drive! You know how when you are driving and you have a close call with danger and that little moment kind of stays in your mind, and you have flashbacks? Well…when I was driving us to Paleohora on Sat we were on I think the wildest roads yet, with construction thrown in to boot. We were just leaving this little village when I met this dump truck kind of vehicle on a curve. We weren’t even on a part of the road where it drops off 200 feet, this part was maybe only a 50 ... read more

Greetings, We continue on here in Paleohora, and are really loving it here. Rented scooters yesterday and were out and about on the wld roads until the wind nearly blew us over when we rounded one curve so we made our way home. Heard this morning when I was out walking that the ferry is cancelled today due to high winds so we will return our scoots and explore a few more roads in the car. I am on a poor internet connection so will use pics to tell you about our last few days, and I do mean our LAST few days. I will do a separate entry for my trek through the Samaria Gorge. ... read more

Just wating for Gord to have his breakfast. The last 2 places I have been able to find sheep milk yogurt which is really good. I am in the internet cafe right beside the hotel...this may be the last blog I post as this place closes after today. Looking into scooter and bicycle rentals today...there is a path along the coast I want to bike on. Gord has developed a bit of a heel spur (actually it was bothering him for a few weeks before we left but he didn't tell me, state secret I guess!!) and daily icing has helped keep it from getting worse), so he prefers to scoot, though he has walked more than I thought he would!!! Speak of the devil...Gord has just arrived...looking good in his shorts (I think I detcted ... read more

Day 16 and 17 Good Morning… Now where were we…ah yes, in our last exciting episode I was heading out to hike over the hill to the beach on the other side. It was quite the hike, the “hill” was very steep and the trail was, well, interesting. It wasn’t until I ended up overlooking a precipice about half way up and had to backtrack that I saw the red dots painted here and there marking the trail. I got a good laugh about this because when I was researching this trip and looking at different hikes the book said of hiking in general, “if you get lost and see a goat, don’t follow it, it will lead you to the edge of a cliff. Follow a donkey instead, it will lead you back to a ... read more

Alright, I am super behind on this, because we have been on the go! Anyway, on our last day in Crete, I hiked the Samarian Gorge. This is the largest Gorge in Europe, and it was definitely one of the best days yet in Greece. This was going to be a close call, because we had to make our boat at 8pm. Our hotel receptionist told us there was NO WAY this could be done, but we decided that we still needed to go and we took the chance. There were 5 guys and 4 girls in our group who decided to do the Gorge. We split up though (The guys were extremely concerned we would slow them down...lame). We woke up around 5am and caught a bus up the mountain. This took an hour or ... read more
