We’ve been to Crete so many times that it’s hard to know what to say. After arriving in Heraklion by ferry, we had a 2 hour drive to Chania and then a 90 minute drive from there, over the mountains to Paleochora, our destination. The trip to Chania was uneventful. It was great to be back in Crete with its flora, its smells and all those familiar things. In Chania we got terribly lost because the SatNav didn’t have roads beyond Chania, Karl didn’t want to get a map and we tried to find the way out of Chania for ages. Onita eventually persuaded Karl to buy a map and it was easy from there! We stopped in Platanias for a quick snack and drink at a rather typical, chavvy north-coast holiday resort. Karl was amused ... read more

Knowing the place as we do, it took us no time at all to settle in. Karl unpacked the car while Onita packed things in cupboards, drawers and wardrobes. The kids jumped out of their clothes and into their swimming costumes, eager to do some swimming. Once the car was unpacked, Karl took them swimming, which was bliss.... read more

6 hours on the ferry. The ferry was almost identical to the last, but this one had rows and rows of bench seats on the deck which made for a more comfortable sleep. We arrived in Heraklion, Crete expecting to find a guy with a sign and a van, ready to drive us to his hotel. We walked off the ferry in the crowd and saw nothing. Nothing but friends and family waiting for others. No guy, no sign, nowhere to stay. Just a lousy Lonely Planet map, which didn't specify where we were in relation to anything. We made our way to the main road, saw a sign saying city center pointing straight ahead. Half of the fellow ferry passengers went right, the rest straight. Again it was stinking hot and we just wanted to ... read more

So today was UNBELIEVABLE! I don’t even know where to start! We started out by going to Elounda and got an iced coffee. The Gyro shop that we love was not open for another hour. We walked around the town until it was time for our Gyro’s to open up! We decided to get a Gyro to go because our driver was going to stop by and pick us up! We ate our Gyro on the way and our six hour excursion began! We wound around A LOT of hills and small Greek villages. It was so awesome to see the way the people live! We first stopped by a small church which was over 500 hundred years old. You couldn’t even see the church from the road it was something you had to know about ... read more

Today was pretty boring here in Crete compared to yesterday! We actually slept in until 11 a.m. and just hung around the resort! I read the majority of the early afternoon until we decided to walk to Plaka for lunch! We ate lunch at the same place that we had dinner the day before! The pace here is so weird! We finally figured out that you have to ask for your bill or else they will let you sit there forever! Our lunch lasted almost 2 hours! A little known fact is…..they build little tiny churches along the road when someone passes away! The family will go and put things inside the churches such as candles and pictures! I will take a picture of one tomorrow and put it in the blog We went back to ... read more

Four planes, one big bag of licorice, 1 box of Goobers, 4 in-flight meals, 1 movie, 5 random naps, 1 talkative French girl, lost luggage, 500 second hand cigarettes smoked (and counting), numerous people who need deodorant and a dental plan, 1 cab ride, and it’s official we are FINALLY in Crete! All in all, it took about 23 hours of travel time to get here; although our luggage stayed in the states! The resort that we are staying at is breathtaking! I will try and post some pictures in this blog but if I can’t, then I will do it later! We decided to do some shopping courtesy of Air France last night seeing as we had been in the same clothes for a day! We took a cab down to a little town called ... read more

Yassas! (Hello) Well the Summer Holiday I had been waiting months for is all over so if you have time i'll tell you a bit about it! Actually I should warn you, it's not a bit, it's alot, so grab a drink and take a seat if you're interested! Our trip started on Friday the 11th of July with the ten of us catching the Gatwick Express (1/2 hour) from Victoria Station to Gatwick Airport. From there we flew out to Heraklion Airport in Crete (one of the larger main Greek Islands). It was all very exciting on arrival, not only did we get bombarded by the 30 degree heat, our shuttle driver was holding up a sign with my name on it! (only the best treatment for me of course!) haha. We arrived at the ... read more

In order to leave Santorini and get to Ios, we had to get ourselves back down to the port. Lucky for us, George, or Mike if you prefer real names, arranges this for you. Unlucky for us, it wasn't George who would be driving us, but his brother. We'll call him, George II. So George II shows up and doesn't seem particularly happy to be driving us and two other people to the port on this particular day. We get into his little van, and about... mmmm..... 20 seconds into the drive I see how this is going to go. This is going to be one of those times where your life flashes in front of your eyes, about every.. ten seconds. We're weaving in and out of traffic on the narrow "city" streets. Pedestrians really ... read more
