Friday 8th May Souda Bay Commonwealth War Cemetary and Enchanting Chania After a good nights sleep in the 4 poster bed we awoke to a stunning sunrise and lay in bed with the old fashioned wooden window pushed up to watch the sun climb into the brilliant blue sky. There are two ways to get to the terrace at our traditional rooms,1)go down the stairs, across a room, through a small courtyard and climb some 20 odd dodgy steps or 2)simply climb out our bedroom window.!!We opted for number 2 !!One of us passed out the breakfast, cutting board for the bread and utensils and before you knew it breakfast was served under the sun umbrella. The walkway around the small harbour was just starting to get a few early risers even though it was now getting towards 9am. ... read more

Olin jotenki olettanu, että mua oltais oltu vastassa lentokentällä (sopimuksessakin lukee että ne järkkää kuljetuksen ”from the capital of home country to the hotel area”), mutta eipäs ollut.

Thursday 7th May We awoke to another glorious looking day as the neighbourhood stirred.Nothing starts too early in Greece which is wonderful when the day is extended by daylight saving. We have really appreciated shutters in our stay at this hotel and the way they are used to keep out the light rather than in NZ where they usually seem to be installed for decroative purposes. They have certainly worked effectively us for to sleep in. With our Greek style breakfast over went downstairs to check the internet. The hotel is sited amongst apartment blocks and on the widest road I think we have encountered. But as it is in a residential area there is little or no traffic noise. In fact there was more noise from the occasional barking dog or catfight when they occurred.A great find by ... read more

Wednesday 6th May In search of Uncle Dan The principal reason for coming to Crete was to search for some history of where my late Uncle Dan fought with the 18th Infantry,NZ Expeditionary Force in the disastarous Battle of Crete in May 1941. My mother always spoke fondly of her brother Dan,who had a mop of auburn/ginger hair just like I used to have, and it was for her more than anything that we have made this pilgramige to Crete as it was one place she would have liked to visit had she been able. Uncle Dan joined the army shortly after he was married in September 1940 as WW2 moved into a more involved state.Within 2 months he was on board a ship bound for more intensive training in war in Egypt.I don’t think he ... read more

Tuesday 5th May Goodbye Santorini........Hello Crete We both awoke several times during the night as you do when the wind is blowing plastic furniture around. While there had been steady light rain yesterday it wasn’t accompanied by wind but this had changed during the night and we opened the shutters at 7am to find a strong wind blowing the palms around and making little waves on the pool we had not got to use. The rain had stopped so after breakfast we decided to check out what time our transfer to the ferry port would be and then factor in an activity for the day which we hoped would be enough time to bus to the northern town on the island called Oia and walk back to Fira along the rim of the caldera. This walk should take ... read more

Well, got to live somewhere later in life - London is so expensive, it's impossible...However, decided that Crete wasn't for me - unless I wanted to spend my life rebuilding - starting with a roof! And Kate and I had a great holiday, our balcony overlooked the sea and it was great to be back in this part of the world. But house-hunting for later in life is just going to have to wait a bit longer... We loved whizzing around having a look everywhere though - Krista was the village I thought looked most likely for me, but not to be. We grabbed a boat out to Spinalonga - the 'Leper Island', now abandoned - a very still place, surrounded by vivid turquoise sea and lots of remnants of the old Turkish architecture, overlaid with ... read more

After an exhilarating and tiring four days in Egypt, Sarah and I spent a day back in Athens, mostly regrouping, and then headed out to Crete for the remainder of spring break! We arrived in Crete around 6am and waited at a passenger's center (nice building with a little shop and chairs) for about an hour when we decided we would be likely to find a bus. Our first destination was Rethymno, a little over an hour bus ride from Heraklion. We found the town without problem and got ourselves checked into the hostel. After freshening up a bit, we went for a walk around the town, which was really nice and incredibly familiar, since many small Greek towns are pretty similar- a nice welcome home-ish for me. After a few hours of walking around, we ... read more

Hi folks - afraid this will be the last message as the adventure is almost over. I really have had a whale of a time. Left Palermo last night, possibly my favourite place. Full of classical architecture decorated with statues, like Rome without the ampitheatre, but with the same drivers....you have to witness Italian drivers to believe it. No Mafia apparent but Judy (the lady I mentioned meeting, born in Italy) tells me they're there all right below the surface. They really to appear in Trilbys and shut the street down to deal with business! Judy is a romany gypsy employed as a tarot reader and to chat to passengers ( the real thing, she's used by the police to solve crimes). Perhaps she saw me coming? She lives on the Isle of Wight and loves ... read more

The Republic of Crete? This is the biggest of all Greek islands and Heraklion is the capital. From the port, it is just a few minutes to the city center where protests or rallies seem to be the order of the day. Our guide warned us about it, while at the same time telling us that we would be heading straight for the Palace of the Knossos before coming back to explore the rest of the capital. Palace of the Knossos This is the most important Minoan site excavated in Crete. Our bus parked in some corner and we walked towards the area discovered by Sir Arthur Evans whose bust welcomes all visitors to this tourist site. A civilization with extensive trade routes as far away as Afghanistan and Scandinavia was found here. The traded goods ... read more

Friday, 9th January, 2009, continued We relaxed for a while, and changed to go out for a walk and some dinner. There was a Chinese restaurant just round the corner, so this was our choice for tonight. We had meal for two, changed a couple of items, and had the following, a chicken noodle and chicken sweetcorn soup, spring rolls, sweet and sour pork balls, chicken in mushroom sauce, szeuchan beef and fried rice. With drinks €41.40. Pat likes the coffee place, Livingroom, so we had a coffee, and did some people watching for a while, then popped to the supermarket and back to the hotel. I forgot to mention a couple of the places we visited in Chania earlier today, one was a Greek Orthodox church in the town centre. We had a quick look ... read more
