A... read more

Geo: 40.0998, 23.7892 GÜN 04 GÜNLERDEN PAZARTESİ: Güne yağmurla başladık.. Nerede dünkü hava ? nerede bugünkü… Saat 09:00 a doğru kahvaltıya indik. Haddim olmayarak, biraz Halkidiki yarımadasını kafanızda canlandırmak ... read more

Geo: 40.6197, 22.9442 GÜN 03 GÜNLERDEN PAZAR: Sabah fix program olarak 08:30 da artık yuvamız sayılan Nezih 'in Kahvesine oturduk. Bu sabah kahvaltıyı hafif geçmeğe kararlıyız. Tostumuzu yiyip çayımızı içerken, daha doğrusu içerkene, ben İpsala Turing kulübünün telefonunu buldum. Saat tam 09.00 da Ayşe aradı.. "Kuyruk yok" dediler …Nasıl yani ?? mucize mi ? işletiyorlar mı ? .. Çayı kahveyi acilen bıraktık... bir telaşla paramızı ödedik … Otelden son eşyalarımızı alıp, Şahbaz'ı (şahbaz, bizim minibüstür) kaç dakikada yüklediğimize inanamıyorum.. Apar topar yola çıktık… Ayşe'ye çaktırmadan biraz gazlıyorum.. Keşan kavşağından cırt diye İpsala'ya döndüm .. Hududa yaklaşıyorum ..kalbim küt küt atıyor..hakikaten kimsecikler yok .. From Neapolis, we headed to Ancient Philippi. Finding it was quite the adventure because it was called Filliopi on the map & didn't even register on the GPS! But it was worth the effort. Phippi is named after Alexander the Great's father. During New Testament times it was a busy Roman colony. It boasted a great library, theater, & forum. Today it is ruins. Paul preached here & established the 1st church in Europe. We walked on the Via Egnatia (the superhighway of the ancient world that connected everyone to Rome), checked out the Forum (the shopping center that Paul would have visited), sat in the ancient Theatre, & visited 3 ancient churches. We sang (a little off key - we needed Barbara or the choir to help us!) at the prison that held Paul & ... read more

Sorry about the blog delays...we got back late yesterday & then there was a stream of water flowing down from the ceiling in our room. By the time we finished changing rooms it was 1 am! It's never a dull moment! Bright & early Monday morning, we took off in our car to Kavala - the Ancient Port of Neapolis. Dodging motorcycles & mopeds, we explored the countryside of Northern Greece. The wheat & corn fields reminded us of Indiana & the mountain ranges where like the Smokies. Then we would come around the corner & there was the Mediteranean! Paul came through Neapolis on his way to Philippi (check out Acts 16:11). It remains a busy port city today. Joyce ... read more

After a delicious breakfast of pasteries and fruit, we walked along the Old Beach to the White Tower ( the most recognised monument in the city). Climbing (& be ding!) through the rooms, we learned about the history of Thessaloniki. It is amazing how many people immigrated to Greece throughout the centuries. We hopped on & off the city bus tour. The priest was preparing for a baptim at the Church of Agia Sofia when we arrived. This Byzatine church was built in the 7th century (just after the Council of Nicea). We explored the catacombs under the church. Our next stop was the Church of Agios Dimitrios - one of the most beautiful churches around. Demitious is the patron saint of the city. It is built on the "site" where Paul preached. We saw a ... read more

Northern & Eastern Coast Greece from 12 to 16 June 2013 Before leaving Ohrid, we spotted a place that was selling bikes so we stopped. I got a very girly bike – very unlike me but it was only to ride around towns after all. They didn’t have one for Tom so that is still on the list. After leaving Ohrid in Macedonia, we headed over the beautiful mountain range to the Greek border. Unfortunately we were challenged by the border authorities again, now on the Greece side. This authoritarian guy said to Tom “I want your International Green card for Vehicle Insurance in paper form”. We hadn’t found a place to print our electronic version. So Tom said “Sorry but we don’t have a hard copy” and again showed him the electronic version on his ... read more

Gelato now seems to be a thing of the past but I will report again once we reach gelato area again. Breakfast this morning was included in our room rate and a very good Greek style breakfast it was too with creamy yogurt and a half cooked peach, egg, salami, beetroot etc. The day was fine and sunny and it had the feeling it was going to get very warm as the day progressed. The unusual sandstone 'hills'were formed 60 million years ago and are quite extraordinary as we have seen nothing else like them in our travels around Greece either this time or before. What is more remarkable about this World Heritage site is that on the tops of the 'hills' six monasteries have been built to follow the teachings of the Greek Orthodox church. The first was built ... read more

Yesterday we arrived in Kastraki. It's a very tiny town and at times you won't see anyone on the streets, but it still attracts tourists because it is situated below the rock formation and monasteries of Meteora. These are the most amazing rock formations I have ever seen! Our hotel looks right at them so I get to wake up to this beautiful site. Our hotel is really nice, it doesn't feel like you are in a hotel, it feels like you are in their home (we've already used their washing machine!). The rock formations apparently were originally a delta shaped cone consisting of river stones and mud. Over time it separated into two areas and the water found an outlet into the Aegian. Due to the wind, earthquakes and rain caused it to break up ... read more
