Apologies for taking so long to write this. It is now Tuesday night (actually, now Thursday night), the first part of my flights home left Athens at 4.20pm on Thursday, after a wait of around four hours at Dubai we left at about 2am Friday morning, landing at Kuala Lumpar at about 1pm and landing at Melbourne at 1am Saturday (local times used). Having an awesome daughter who insisted on picking me up from the airport regardless of the time of my landing, I decided to book a room at the Parkroyal at Tullamarine Airport (with super comfy beds). Last Thursday turned out quite interesting. Another Greek breaky of ham and cheese on buttered bread, this time with full confidence (all the awkward peering under lids to inspect the contends having been done the morning before). ... read more

Day 182 Monday 18th July 2016 – Athens Our hotel does not offer a laundry service but gave us directions to a laundromat which was roughly in the direction of our destination today the National Archaeological Museum. We decided not to take our dirty clothes for a walk just in case we could not find it or it was too expensive, we eventually found it and it was cheap, great we will air our dirty laundry tomorrow. Next door to the Laundromat is a Refugee service centre and there was a queue of about twenty men going into it, and this has been the only sign of the refugees in this city that we have seen. We actually expected to see lots of refugees on the streets here begging but we have only seen ... read more

Day 178 Thursday 14th July 2016 – Larnaca to Athens We have a 1.00pm flight today so it is a nice easy start to the day, we had breakfast in the apartment and then packed and got a taxi at 10.30am to the airport. As we arrived we saw three dogs entering the airport and at first glance we thought sniffer dogs then looked at the people with them and they were tourist. It turned out they were dogs from the Nicosia Dog Shelter going to new homes, they were being put into cages in the terminal for their flights, first time we have seen dogs lining up for a flight. This is a quick flight to Athens only 1.5 hours making sure we got stamped in, we have been to Athens twice before ... read more

I see I have been slacking again on the blog front - sorry about that! Sunday I finally got to ride a Greek train, and it was a great trip. I was in a six-seat compartment - very old-fashioned, but a brand new carriage. The trip was long because the train really slowed down when it was winding its way through a couple of ranges of hills. I didn't mind at all because the scenery was fantastic. At one point we were passing through deeply-eroded limestone with plunging gorges and cross-capped pinnacles. Yesterday was taken up by practical matters, primarily getting the third rabies jab. True to form this proved to involve travelling to two widely-separated places and spending a lot of time waiting. Anyway, it's done. Number 4 will happen in Germany and it will ... read more

The flight from Copenhagen went smoothly - I was surprised there was no passport control on arrival. The wonders of the EU! I was driven to the hotel by a very chatty young Greek who told me of his adventures visiting Istanbul. Several good tips. The group met in the bar - there are 14 of us including the leader - and we boarded an enormous bus to drive out to Cape Sounion, the southernmost tip of Attica. There is a temple to Poseidon on the hilltop. Scenic as all get out. We stopped at a seafood restaurant on the way back. Huge quantities of fried calamari, shrimp and small fish, then a grilled whole fish. Back to the hotel, and I went straight to bed.... read more

After missing our 0430 flight to Athens, which we were one hour early for (don't ask, I'm still furious and awaiting a refund) we arrived in Athens in the late afternoon. We quickly got our rental car and were off to drive northwest into the mountains to visit Delphi and Thermopylae. Dennis wanted to visit Greece during this trip to see some historical sites, mainly Sparta and Thermopylae. I think the only reason he agreed to this trip was that I humored him for a 3 day Greek tour to see what he wanted to see. I had briefly visited Athens 20 years ago on Mediterranean cruise with my Mom and grandparents, and looked forward to returning both here and Istanbul. We drove for about 3 hours and arrived in the town of Delfoi after dark ... read more

We got into Athens late on Easter Sunday. We were a little worried that nothing would be opened on Monday but luckily there was a lot to do, just with limited hours. The weather was beautiful as we walked from our hotel to the Panathenaic Stadium. The city was the same as I remembered - grey, dirty, and graffitied, but the big marble stadium looked beautiful as we approached. The entrance included an audio guide so we grabbed one and started off on our Olympic tour. We walked the perimeter before heading into the Athlete's tunnel towards the hall filled with Olympic torches and posters of many of the past Olympic competitions. A quick mini race on the track and hike up to the top of the stairs and we were on our way to the ... read more

The journey from Perth to Athens takes 24 hours with a 7 hour stopover in Doha. We were greeted in Athens by a warm young lady with a happy welcome to Athens communicating confidence that ‘everything has been taken care of’ for the transfer to the Palace Electra Hotel. It was close to dusk and just time for a quick walk through the narrow streets and laneways around the hotel before it was time to call it a day and catch up on much needed sleep. Two glorious days of shopping and revisiting favourite locations from our previous trip to Athens called us to wakefulness well before the early sunrise. I discovered that I needed to adjust to the rhythm of Athens. Forget early morning gym and swim – these open at 9:00am. Breakfast is a ... read more

Today we are in Athens. The city is about 5million people, roughly the Ame size as Dallas. Nalynn and I took the climb up to the Parthenon. It was a tough climb over slippery marble, but well worth the effort. I also climbed the hill where Paul preached to the Athenians in Acts 17. Attached are a few pictures of the day.... read more
