ok, leaving off from rome sightseeing. it was one of the guy's birthday so we had a fun night at the bar at the campsite. we stay in cabins most of the time. so far it's been between 2 and 5 people. some have bathrooms, otherwise it's a communal toilet block. oh by the way, italy doesn't use toilet seats!! just the cold porcelain bowl - very uncomfortable but oh well. anyway, greg's birthday was good. he turned 19 and was not too well the next day but he definitely had fun the night before!! i wasn't going to stay long - onlq til they played a bad song, but they never did. left rome and went to venice. i'm in love with that city. it's gorgeous - so romantic. we went in at about 3ish ... read more

One thing the Germans do well is car making. BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes…and of course, Smart! The Smart ForTwo is what I’ve rented for my last 6 days in Heidelberg before my 2 week visit home to Ottawa. First I drove it from the Frankfurt airport to Heidelberg reaching speeds up to 130km/h on the autobahn (it’s maximum speed is 140km/h). The next day I drove the smaller highway along the Neckar River southwest to Heilbronn. Along the way are many vineyards, castles and fairy-tale-looking towns. After 7-8 hours of driving it was time to fill my tank. Cost: 16 Euros (approx $26CDN) ... read more

No way. I actually began classes... over a week ago, now! I know, I know, my medal’s in the mail. But the past 10 days have been action-packed. The first day that I finally had courses scheduled, I actually had two classes overlapped, and I had to duck out of my “Studying and Working Abroad” in favor of attending a meeting about my Melitta design project I’ll be working on for the next 6 or 8 weeks. Yes, friends, that first class *is* being taught in English, and I would tell you more about it, but… I didn’t get to stay and hear about it myself. The Melitta project is a for-real-life thing, which is much more motivating than the for-practice-cause-it’s-good-for-your-health things I usually have at K-State. About 12 people in the product design discipline are ... read more

We missed our train in Milan and arrived in Frieburg late but Tommy's dad, Klemmens was there to meet us anyway and what a nice change it was for us! We got to leave the train station in a car instead of trying to navigate public transportation and we arrived at a house instead of some dodgy hostel! It was a very good day for us. While in Freiburg we celebrated both Tommy and Andrea's birthdays. It's tradition in Germany that the night before your birthday all your friends take you out and do a new year's-esque countdown 10 seconds before midnight. And even though it was Andrea's first trip to Germany, her birthday was no exception. Tommy's friends all met us at the beer garden on April 2nd and counted down to midnight, after which ... read more
