This was another weekend away with the girls from work, it all went by so quickly.... We first landed in Berlin and ended up walking forever from the train station to our hostel... We were all gasping for a drink so that was really our first stop. Staying on the East side of fantastic, it seemed so much more artistic than the other. Berlin was a really funny place, everyone raved about it's nightlife and to be honest on the night I think we were all kinda disappointed... Everywhere was either too quiet or a step back in time. So, we settled for some local bars and then went back to the hostel. The second day was totally different, a bus tour later, we headed back to our hotel to prepare for the White Trash Fast ... read more

Ladies and gents, boys and girls, dogs, cats, birds, snakes… I didn’t do a damn thing but shop in Munich. I have no pictures for you. I have no cultural insights, unless you want to count the observations about today’s über-consumer society (of which I was right there playing a part). I hope I didn’t let you down too much. Know this: it was rainy and gross most of the 30 hours we were actually out of Coburg. It went like this: Tine, a girl from our Resopal competition project, was going that way anyhow in a rented station wagon, which was more than big enough for the 4 of us. Tine ‘had’ to stop at Ikea on the way, and I didn’t realize (though I should have) that Ikea has a small Swedish specialty food ... read more

Today Katherine and I and two of our friends went on a historical walking tour of Baumholder. We were the only English-speaking people on the tour, but a very nice German (the assistant mayor) offered to translate for us. He also helped me carry the stoller up and down stairs. Everywhere we went, there were lovely people eager to share the history of their village. The fire was going at the Blacksmith's and we actually got to see someone work the metal. At the protestant church the organist serenaded us. At the watch tower a “witch” greeted us. The best thing about this free walking tour was the free schnapps at the end. The man translating for us told us we had to try it (it’s tradition or custom or something), but he warned us that ... read more

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls: I have not fallen off the face of the earth… I’ve been busy. Gasp!! As hard as that may be to believe, you all know the saying that when it rains it pours, and I have long had the premonition that my severe lack of work at the beginning of my stay would result in its coming back to bite me in the tuchus later on. So where on earth do I begin? For starters, it’s SPRING. ‘Bout damn time. We’ve had a lot of rainy days over the last 2 ½ weeks since you last heard from me… I saw some god-awful big snails, the kind that make you grimace in disgust. Sadly, I didn’t have my camera on hand, so I can’t share the face-making experience with you. ... read more

Sometimes there are some perks in working for a big company. This was one of them. I had a free trip to Bavaria for a five day Lend Lease junket. We got to stay in a really nice hotel in a beautiful town in deepest darkest Bavaria. Essentially it was five days of hanging out with people from other countries and learning about the similarities and differences between us. And we ate lots of sausages. The nicest bit of the trip was the two extra days I stayed on in Munich with Lisa Chard, my oldest friend. We've known each other since we met over some wooden blocks at kindergarten and have stayed friends since then. She's living in Munich this year and I was planning on visiting her anyway - so thanks Lend Lease for ... read more

David taught Katherine how to put her hands in her pockets, and we took some cute pictures. This journal entry is probably not very interesting to people who want to read about Germany, but I'm sure the grandmas will be enthralled. Also, I've included a picture of my favorite mannequin (just in case you missed him in the two previous entries). ... read more

Since Wojtiech's family convinced us to stay longer than we planned we ended up getting to Berlin late at night. We were so excited to see Ausgang (stairs) because we knew we would be able to understand the language a little bit better than in Poland! On our first day in Berlin we took a walking tour around the city. We saw museum island, the east Berlin artists quarter, the oldest synagogue in Germany, the Reichstag (the government building), the new Jewish holocaust memorial, Hitler's bunker, and Hitler's apartment, the Brandenburg Gate, we walked along the route that the wall was built on. It was a four hour tour, those are just the highlights! That afternoon we went back to the Reichstag and climbed up it's glass dome for a great view of Berlin. That night ... read more

David, Katherine, and I went to Idar-Oberstein this evening. It's a good place to go people-watching. When I went on Monday, I saw a man wearing leder-hosen for the first time since I've been in Germany. This evening we saw four German soldiers walking down the street side by side eating ice cream cones. That would have been a great picture, but I'm too shy to snap pictures of random people. When Katherine gets hungry, we have to eat right away, so we ended up eating dinner at a fast food place rather than a restaurant. Even so, it was very expensive (about 20 dollars). I guess the German lady was asking us if we wanted everything super-sized, but we didn't know it, and we nodded our heads. We ended up with tons of fries. Even ... read more
