Hello to all. Mark and I are in Dusseldorf now waiting for our flight to depart for Bangkok. We cannot believe how quickly the time has passed in the past month. We said goodbye to Grant yesterday in Rome after having an incredible month travelling around Europe. In the days before he left, we went to Florence and wanted to visit the Duomo, but with our luck it was Sunday and it was closed. However, we were able to see the David which is really something. It is mind boggling to think about how someone could carve that from one solid piece of stone. We then caught a late train to Rome and crashed after a very long day from travelling from Croatia. The next morning we got up and saw everything there is to see ... read more

A Tale Of Two Germany’s Like any classic fairytale Germany’s story includes hero’s, dark villains, dramatic scenery and a hopeful ending. It is a land of majestic castles surrounded by enchanted forests and quaint villages. A story that also includes mad kings, bleak times and sinister rulers. Before we get too poetic or educational on you, we just want to add…WE LOVE GERMANY (we may have been influenced by the large portions of the best food we’ve had in Europe. A great example of one of Germany’s charming villages is Garmisch. We wanted to be sure to visit it for sentimental reasons. Back in the dark ages, the US government gave J’s family a free trip to Germany. Well, okay… the Army had a few strings attached. J’s dad was stationed in Germany for 3 years. ... read more

So… about that storm of homework… 3 big projects, 2 little weeks and the computer is not being cooperative. My big design project, the one I’m designing with the product design department and in cooperation with Melitta, has a final design, at long last, and in order to have a final model to show off, our teacher, Herr Kampe, arranged a pretty sweet deal with a modellbau (a workshop) that’s in Nürnberg (about an hour south of here). So, along came Saturday the 23rd and I carpooled down to the place with a few other students to jump into model making. I was totally flying by the seat of my pants, because I had no idea how I was even going to begin with this thing… it was supposed to turn out as a rubber placemat ... read more

I arrived in Berlin last night. After a detour on the wrong train from the airport I found my way to the hostel an hour later then expected ;) Found two guys from Norway who knew this alternative place, it's a community driven café/bar/club where the alternative people gather. Artists, punk-people, homo community, just everyone "else" :) This night they had live performances by a few different Sing & Songwriters and as main artist "Kitty". Small time singer mixing the voice of Elin Sigvardsson with an electric guitarr and drums. All in all I found the place and the people to be more interesting then the music. Didn't bring the camera there unfortunately. Today I walked around in Berlin for hours, went to Checkpoint Charlie and the Topography of Terror exhibition. I'm kind of tired of ... read more

Germany has to be the land of fests or festivals as almost every weekend there is some type of celebration going on in one of its numerous villages. This past weekend (July 30 -31) the village of Aub held a different type of fest, a medieval faire. Rather than have a typical festival with carnival rides and a beer fest hall, Aub holds its annual medieval faire. They try to make it as real as possible, with many of the villagers dressing up in costumes of the period. All the various booths maintain this theme and also all of the games (ax throwing and crossbow shooting). The food booths also attempt to maintain this theme with various foods of the medieval period, some of which I have never seen before. One of which looked like a ... read more

Hello everybody!!!! We are in frankfurt and we like the city!!!! Very nice and Lina is really happy as they have starbucks coffee!!!! Our hotel is nice and cheap including breakfast (18 euros a night) Prag was horrible!!!! At least at the train station. Everybody was rude and because of their incompetence we missed our train to fankfurt and had to take another one. It was really horrible. The trip from krakow to prag wasn't that great either. But good thing is we met a german boy (17 years old but looked like 15) who had overslept on the train and ended up in prag with no money. So we had a few laughs with him. Going to paris tomorrow for four nights. booked a hotel for 22 euros a night walking distance from Moulin Rouge! ... read more

Today we set out to see as many things as we could in our last day. In the morning we went to The National museum which included the Pergamon. We went to some other smaller museums dotted around the city but the most confronting part of our day was a visit to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. It really made all that Matt and I had even learnt about come to life. It was just so disturbing to think what horrible conditions the people were subjected to. At one stage I couldn't help the tears from running down my face. We had intended to get back to go to the Holocaust museum but we really didn't want to rush the concentration camp. I think Berlin may be one of those places we need to come back to. ... read more

Today we went on a walking tour led by a Canadian/Berliner named Brian. It was just mind-blowing! Brian really new his stuff and had many stories to tell. I can't possibly narrow six hours down but I will mention some highlights. One thing Matt and I were blown away with was standing on the site above Hitler's bunker where he was brought above ground after he killed himself. We also saw the sight of the book burnings where there was an arty memorial underground. We walked through a controversial memorial to the Jews that consisted of different levelled cement blocks. As well we looked at a memorial for the 96 men who voted against Hitler and in one way or another under Nazi rule lost their lives. Of course we saw the exsisting part of the ... read more

We arrived safely in Berlin on Wednesday evening. Our apartment is just great. It is the main floor of a beautiful old house in a residential district of Berlin. After a good night's sleep we set off to see the city yesterday. We took in several sights and feel much more like Berliner's. Today we went to the Berlin Zoo. Unfortunately our computer has gone on the frity and we are working on how to download our pictures. We shall see how that goes but we probably won't be able to post much when we use these internet cafe's. The weather is very hot and humid here in Berlin. This city is beautiful and very easy to get around on the transit system. We have decided to not pick up our rental car until Tuesday. We ... read more
