We started bright and early Friday morning to get to Weimar. It was a long train trip, so most of us slept or listened to our ipods, and when we got there, the first thing we did was go to Buchenwald, the concentration camp that was set up about 8 km outside of town. This was one of the things I was really excited to do, because visiting a concentration camp is on my bucket list; I think it's a very important piece of world history and I think that seeing it was very important to me, to remind me of things and just make me realize how bad things can get. I knew going in that it was going to be a very emotionally intense trip. The first thing we did was look through the ... read more

After an easy non-driving day in Leipzig, we girded our loins for a tougher day driving across northern Germany. Our route would take us to Buchenwald (near Weimar), then to Gießen, then on to Köln. All told, the journey would be some 519 km (322 miles). This area of Germany is mostly rolling hills, forested in areas, and driving on the modern highways is very easy. Most of the driving was on freeways. I like getting off onto smaller roads, but it is not really very practical when you need to cover significant distances. We would have liked to spend some time in Weimar, an important in German cultural history, but there was simply not enough time, and our object was Buchenwald, the concentration camp nearby. I had never previously seen a concentration camp, and always ... read more

Weimar, just an hour by train from Leipzig, is a wonderful historical little town. It seems like every famous German person in the history of Germany has lived in Weimar. Okay, so maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but Schiller, Goethe, Bach, Strauss, Nietzsche, Martin Luther, Wagner, and Marlene Dietrich all lived here at some point. I was spending the night with Kathrin and Hendrik, who are Servas members (Servas is an organization dedicated to promoting peace and intercultural understanding). Kathrin's dad picked me up at the train station, I had tea with Kathrin, and then I hit the town. I later spent the evening with Kathrin and her daughter, Amira. We ate a typical German dinner and then Amira and I learned colors and animals in German together while we played with her toys. ... read more

Amber's Journal: We managed to survive the flight and arrived safely in Frankfurt at 11:30 this morning. We were originally supposed to take a taxi to the downtown Budget office to avoid airport fees but they were kind enough to let us rent from the airport without the extra fees. Apparently they only allow certain car models to be taken into the Czech Republic so we were given a free "upgrade" as well. Our "upgrade" turned out to be this totally ugly granny mini-van. It seats seven and is way bigger than what anyone else here is driving. We laughed about it all day but we were grateful to have a car, especially one that is diesel and has a GPS system. I was glad I let Preston do all the driving. He handles the stress ... read more

Started yesterday morning early from Paris via Weimar to Praque. another 1.100 km. Due to technical problems at the train there was a delay of 2 hours and only arrived in Weimar 4 o clock in the afternoon. Germany has their share of the crisis . never saw so many people in Germany trying to find food in the wastebins at the stations. Weimar. 65.000 people in the Bundesland Thueringen. The oldest record of the city dates from 895. The city gave his name to the weimar republic ( 1919-1933) and during worldwar II there was the concentration camp Buchenwald who took care for slaves for the local industry. Weimar visited by Hitler 150 times sleeping in hotel Elephant.Weimar a centre of Nazis before and in worldwar II. They lived here all: Goethe and Marlene Dietrich, ... read more

17th - 18th September We left Lake Constance and headed for a town called Schiltach which is in the Black Forest. We have loved it here. The lonely planet guide didn’t give it much of a write up but it did say it was the prettiest town in the Black Forest and they weren’t wrong. There are two rivers running through here which meet. The houses are built on the side of the hills and are half timbered. The boys were simply happy to be camping by the river and making rafts to float down and watch the trout. We went out sightseeing today and everything we did was free. The bath museum was great - the 1970s bathroom stood out. The boys said that the 1970 bathroom reminded them of Uncle Cliff. All the information ... read more

After heading off early in the morning we cruised up from Cologne to Weimar along the beloved German autobahn. Around 400kms covered in around 2.5 hours. For those who haven't been on one, it's a pretty awesome experience. Also probably one of the only places that you can be going at 180km/h and be overtaken. We arrived mid morning, and I went for a walk through the industrial area of Erfurt whilst Peter took care of some business at his office. My walk gave me a quick look at a side of Germany I had never experienced, East Germany. As Peter had explained to me on the drive, Weimar and Erfurt had changed dramatically since the reunification of Germany in 1989. During the period of Soviet occupation architecture consisted of "Neubaude". These were large square apartment ... read more

Well as many of you know, Weimar is where I spent my two glorious study abroad summers in Germany. SMU had a program there for Music History and German, which fit my studies perfectly, so I went twice! :-) One of my great friends on the program, Justus, was placed in Erfurt, so I decided it would be wonderful to meet up with him at the Zwiebel Fest in Weimar and then he was nice enough to let me crash at his place! I woke up early on Saturday morning and headed out with the train, and was supposed to make a stop over at Goettingen to change to a regional train, but of course the punctual german train was 11 minutes late and I missed my 7 min connection. So after some crazy confusion with ... read more

Hey guys, I'm getting a little behind with the whole travel blog thing, but here's some recent news. We toured Khala Porcellain the other day, and it was pretty impressive for all of the engineers in the group. It's the largest porcellain producer in Germany, and has been around for a while. It was re-privatized when the wall fell, and most of the production processes were automated. Since I'm going to be doing research for Siemens in the automation department next summer, I thought it would be a good preview. After the factory tour, we visited the Leuchtenburg castle. It was first built in the 1300s. Then, like so many other things here, it burned down a few hundred years later and was rebuilt for use as a base for hunting expeditions in the 1700s. ... read more
